Clarion Open and Other News...

there are some things i'd like the programmers to improve on FloArena, but navigation isn't one of them.

can't quite understand how anyone would have problems getting to the info they want.

go to the tourney
click on brackets
toggle thru weights and frontside/backside

not sure i understand the difficulties.

could someone be specific? (not trolling. sincerely don't know what the problem is.)

1. Upcoming bouts by mat
"Click On Brackets"
Brackets pop up (often a significantly part of them are hidden out to the right, but that's not germane here), scores are now hidden.

Click on "Upcoming Bouts" to find the next bout: The current bouts are listed first even though they are currently going on and are live on the scoring widgets, you have to scroll to see which mat is which.

The "Upcoming" is fairly useful, but not as useful (IMO with a lot of UX experience) as having the information you are looking for immediately below the mats.

2. Scores of past matches
The scores at the end of a match vanish quickly, so if I hopped over to check a bracket, scrolled to see another match, or had to pause to go pin my kids real quick, it's hard to quickly find the result. Having a quick reference link to get to the prior match on a mat would be really helpful, especially since "Recent Results" is not very useful at all.

Sure, flipping to the brackets gets me there, but often takes 2-3 clicks to find the match, especially in the later rounds of a big tournament. Which brings me to:

3. Brackets.
The brackets defaulting to CurrentRound - 1 would be a good idea. You can always "rewind", but current information should take precedence vs past information because it is more time sensitive.

On track, you can see the active bouts and the upcoming on the same screen. You don't have to change screens on ARENA either.

Also IIRC, track goes up to 5 deep, not 3. TRUE

Also I think track has a button that shows you how the scoring occurred. Which is very cool.

Arena has that too, and it's much easier to get to. Click on the square (where the bout # is)

yes, the sizing of the brackets to the page is kind of annoying. especially when the brackets are huge. that being said, it's pretty easy to scroll by clicking on the rounds.

i also like that you can click on the square and view all the scores/results for a kid by clicking his name. sure helps a ton when monitoring 1 kid or 1 team, and when doing rankings.

i do wish when you type a name in manually, that it would give you links like the square thingy does.

Easy to scroll but still required to scroll, and for time sensitive information. It is better to optimize for folks who are looking for live data rather than people who are perusing past data.

"click on the square" - Yes, this works on the Bracket screen, but not live in the match itself, which I think is what I'm assuming the ask is here.

One thing I'd love (though arena is way better than the competition here), is for every tab/button or at least most to have it's own URL.

Yes, my only big issue is sizing. Too much header, fonts too big although I like the boxing. Perhaps the boxing doesn't work as well with smaller font. Anything over a 16 man bracket is annoying and a 16 man ain't great.

Function is great. As I stated in my OP that started this discussion, would rather follow a tournament on Flo over Track every day of the week. I don't think there is any dissent to that opinion in this discussion.

Oh, and this is almost certainly not doable, but I'd delay the posting to Arena by a minute. Being ahead of the video makes it tough to toggle effectively without being spoiled on live matches.

i can assure you that all of the above will be discussed. though to be frank, i don't agree w/ some of them.

i can also assure you that i've already brought some of these things up to the developers before and that a redesign is coming sometime in 2019.

and finally, i can assure you that nothing every gets done as fast as i wish haha.

The one feature I like in Track over Arena is the match history at the particular mat so you can easily see what you just missed. The two ways to get those recent results in Arena both involve a lot of clicking. But trying to get that result in "Results" is just ugly because you have to know which division you're in, which round (e.g., "consi round of 32") your match was in, and even then your match might not be listed yet.

What would be useful (and perhaps even possible) is to create a new category within Results that pulls the most recent, say, 30 matches that have been wrestled and list them in descending chronological order, most recent at top. And present that "Most Recent" category at the top of the Results hierarchy.

Willie,
I would not have taken that as a troll....

NerfStates comments match mine. I also like to add filters for the team(s) I am following. I think my other comments had a few other nits, too.
With any website, the fewer clicks needed, the better the UI.

I redacted my comment that was totally wrong.

If it were ever to undergo a radical redesign, don't let a developer design it :) !

Sorry to geek out.

I am so excited to have the season get underway! Great to have a thread talking about our future stars actually taking to the mat. We have six more years of Beard and Nevills (maybe seven with a possible Olympic redshirt). Pretty sure they will improve. The future is bright!

If we could hypothetically put together a team of redshirts, greyshirts, and backups, that team would be pretty darn good :)

Love Brooks' fluidity. Similar to Nolf, his takedowns don't happen in stages, they happen all at once. And if he feels resistance he just switches from the head to ankle, all in one motion like it was planned. He's going to be a lot of fun to watch grow.

In other news.....Mason Parris won the Michigan State Open by pinning #15 ranked Matt Stencel in the finals. Parris decked him in 14 seconds.
Jake Woodley of Oklahoma won the 197lb. division.
#18 Rayvon Foley defeated #12 Drew Mattin 12-3

I'll focus on the guy who went up 13-2 on Bulsak in his first action out of high school, and let the coaches worry about the last 7 points of the match.

Quick scan of Bulsak's matches last year: only 2 guys scored 10+ points against him -- Mueller (SD State) and Reenan. The year before, only Weiler.
Probability is high young MR Beard will soon experience the same lesson Quentin had the pleasure of learning with Matt Brown riding Q for about an hour after practice one night.

Let the learning begin.

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but is Beard greyshirting? I thought I read something that said he would greyshirt and redshirt? Is the thought that one of Rasheed or Cassar would man 197 next year then? Or is it likely Beard and Brooks both come in next year and start?

I had a similar question and Pish provided a good answer. Check page 3 of this thread.

My specifics. Using the App...
1. You have “News Events Rankings Results” in the header. You’d think if you selected “Events” it would take you to a page where you can select your event to “Watch Live, Enter Event Arena, or Results” to view everything about that event,(including brackets, upcoming bouts, etc). But “Events” only gives you the ability to watch the event. I have to go to the drop down box, then the Arena, then find my event, where I can finally view other info. I suggest to incorporate your Arena feature with Events, or give Arena some space on the header. I would guess most are watching the live video from the arena page (not “Events” page), since it’s the only way to know what mat we’re looking for. The Arena is your main feature, imo, yet you hide it in a drop down box?
That’s my main beef with the app.
2. In the arena, once a bout has started, it should be removed from “Upcoming”. Only having two actual upcoming bouts isn’t enough. I get a notification text that my interested wrestler is coming up, I flip over to the arena, and it’s not listed.
3. List this as petty annoyance. In the arena, when scrolling through “Upcoming,” the mat number is listed, then bouts on that mat are listed below. In the real-time results, the mat number is listed, and the bout currently taking place on that mat is listed above. Using a phone with a smaller screen, as you’re scrolling through, you have to remember which is which. It can be slightly annoying.
