Clarion Open - Nov 6th

I thought the family was upset because Tom told Swafford he was gonna wrestle, family and friends all went to the match and Tom ended up putting Kem in there. Maybe I’m misremembering.
That IS it. Did Swafford wrestle in another dual, because SW is right, he did ”burn the year”.

Scuffle I believe, wrestled attached there

Not sure but was under the impression swafford only planned to be there a couple years anyway so burning the year didn’t matter.

Not anymore. New rule allows 5 “attached” events (duals or tourneys). But he can’t compete unattached in the first semester. It’s all a bit silly and only creates more headaches
Headaches, maybe. The rule allegedly intends to keep athletes who may be adjusting to school in their first semester from spending all their energy traveling around wrestling 18 matches in the fall instead of focusing on school.

I thought it was 5 competition dates, football has 4.

12.8.3.1.7 Exception -- Men's Wrestling. In men's wrestling, a student-athlete representing a Division I institution may compete in up to five dates of competition during the student-athlete's initial year of collegiate enrollment without using a season of competition. Competition in a conference championship tournament, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, or any other season-ending championship event shall not be exempted from counting as a season of competition.

From https://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling...ollege-wrestling-rules-ahead-2022-2023-season

Any football athlete that competes in more than four games will have to count the year towards their four-year total, but the four-game exception allowed for lineup flexibility, increased experience for younger players and, potentially, as promoters of this rule have argued, more excitement for the fans because of the increased lineup depth.

Starting in the 2022-23 season, wrestlers will have a similar opportunity, with a five-game window.
It is 5...my apologies.

I see that Mason Gibson and Jax Forrest are entering the clarion open.. Thats crazy being only a freshman in HS.
I am so interested in seeing Jax against college competition. See if his slide by series and scrambling ability hold up at this level. I think they will and that he wins multiple matches. I won’t go so far to say that he wins it but I think he has a good showing. I’m not quite as high on Gibson. I think he wins at least a match as well though which is super impressive for a high school kid. Jax’s style is just pretty unique and he’s just damn good. Should be fun to see how they do. The summer between my college freshman and sophomore season I lost to Joe Heskett who was going to be a senior in hs. My teammates gave me a ton of shit but it ended up not being too bad of a loss as Heskett was a beast. Still wasn’t a high point of my career losing to a hs kid when I was in college

I’d be mildly surprised if either one of them won a ton of matches. Jax is EXTREMELY talented but the gap from HS freshman to D1 college wrestler is immeasurable. Gibson similarly, but at least he may be a bit more physically mature and his top-bottom game may allow him to have a little more success.

I agree that I don't see Jax beating many at this tourney but to me the gap is actually from a top 10 pfp hs senior to D1 wrestler. I only say that because Jax beat Jeserouga a couple times this summer so he's already at that level.

I sense some sanity among us

FWIW, Erik Gibson is wrestling at the Clarion Open representing Spartan RTC (as is Meyer Shapiro). I guess the Gibson brothers haven't had time to move to the NLWC yet. Mason Gibson is representing M2 (my error).

I agree. Jax isn’t just any freshman though and there will be walk-ons , division 2 or 3 guys, true freshman, as well as some absolute studs. I don’t think he wins a ton of matches but I think he wins a few. His top game is very good as well. I can see him having problems on bottom as that seems like the toughest thing to figure out when wrestling college level competition. Will be fun to see. I’m putting it out there that I think he wins 2 matches.

Going to need the math expert to weigh in on the competition rules for freshmen.

Are you going to be in Tippin?
No. I’m unfortunately about as far away as possible. I’m in Oregon. You are going I assume? I was hoping it will be on Flo but I haven’t checked. Would love if you would post about what you see from Shapiro

JTS, in the old days Slippery Rock University had a coach from my area so my son and I went up to help him by running a table at the Slippery Rock Open. I think the year was 2002. In came two high school kids from Ohio to this college tournament.

The oldest was CP Schlatter with his younger brother Dustin in tow. (CP wrestled my son on several occasions at other HS tournaments).

At this college event although not as stellar as the Clarion Open, still had good kids. If I remember correctly, both CP and Dustin made their respective finals and I think in the finals, if memory serves me, they both won by forfeit.

This logic could also mean Jesuroga isn't ready.

In fact, you should go onto HR and make that exact point.

I could see all four HS wrestlers doing well. Ramos coming down to 125 is probably the Favorite. I think Gibson’s strength will keep him in the matches. Forrest is dangerous and will place top four but looks weak and this could potentially be a problem against the college level handfighting.
I don’t see any 149 pounders Shapiro should be worried about. He is a recruit I wish we locked up. Who knows with the latest run of wrestlers from Ithaca but still might have a chance.

Anyone know if any Penn State wrestlers going? Might go if they are, only 20 minute drive for me.

I'll see what I can do. I'm not sure yet what mat I'll be on. I'm sure it will all be on Flo, it has been the last 5 years.

Just got mat assignment texts from flo arena for Steen and Evans, but I don’t know what event—assuming this??

I just saw the lists. I am excited to see the hs kids compete. Will be interesting to see if they show up or back down

I saw Gibson wrestled at the Surge and now tommorrow wrestling at Clarion open. Those McCort kids wrestle everywhere. It almost feels like Jax wrestled 100 matches in last couple months. Lol
