Clarion Open - Nov 6th

Piaa is losing out on not allowing them to wrestle. I think ticket sales would go up with Basset, Forest, Herring and Gibson back to back to back to back in the finals.
What does the Mechanicsburg thing mean?

I thought you said one of those 4 was sittin anyway.

Who knows. Not sure how they could all start, but a good problem to have. Faith is running into the same problem but their issue comes in the uppers. They will eventually have upper weights not able to get in the lineup.

Forrest F over Esplain from navy. Takedown and ride out in first. Had two turns, one went oob and didn’t get two swipes on the other. Fireman’s into a half for the fall in 2nd.
Seems pretty big for a 9th grader. He take a redshirt?

This kid is tough and definitely a nice size 125. I am very impressed with his skills as a youngster. He body type makes him look bigger than ever these college 125s. I could see him being like DT and growing into a nice size 157-165.

Shapiro reminds me so much of Keegan. Same body type and pinning ability. He is the one kid I really hoped would come to PSU that didn’t. Not complaining other than the fact he ended up at Cornell

KemDawg had surgery in April and just got cleared to wrestle again.. He said freestyle is in his future.

Another fun fact.. He barely chose cornell over clarion RTC

We really gonna call Cornell a little pond?
Have you seen their home gym? It’s a decent attendance for a Tuesday night PIAA dual meet in central pa.

Cornell can develop great wrestlers, but it’s like comparing Alabama/SEC to Houston/American Conf in football. Do I need to quote Bo Nickal right now?

I agree. Jax isn’t just any freshman though and there will be walk-ons , division 2 or 3 guys, true freshman, as well as some absolute studs. I don’t think he wins a ton of matches but I think he wins a few. His top game is very good as well. I can see him having problems on bottom as that seems like the toughest thing to figure out when wrestling college level competition. Will be fun to see. I’m putting it out there that I think he wins 2 matches.
He annihilated every match but the one he lost

Very true.....BUT.......the other ranked guy (#24) from Kent State and the Honorable mention wrestler from Clarion failed to show. Only one guy in the top 33 showed and he was teched by him. That said.....a high school freshman won 5 matches at a college open and that is quite impressive.....just not other worldly in this case. That said.......if they could sign him today.....I don't think there would be a college that wouldn't gladly take him :)

The kid Espalin from Navy he pinned was a 4X state champ in AZ. Not PA, but a good wrestling state and a highly ranked recruit that Navy is excited about.

How do the high school kids attend?

This is a college tournament, and if they let all the HS kids in who would like to attend, the tournament wouldn’t be as enticing to the college wrestlers. The college wrestlers really don’t want to wrestle and potentially be beaten by a HS competitor. There is only downside for them.

Are a limited number of slots allocated, are there invitations issued, or how does it work? Obviously the elite high schoolers can be very competitive.

It’s an Open so anyone can enter. HS kids have been entering college opens/above age class tournaments for years (i.e. Cary Kolat at Midlands, Jimmy Carr at the Olympic Trials, etc.) so it comes with the territory as a collegiate competitor. Also, if my memory serves me right, the wins over non-collegiate competition doesn’t count against their win/loss record anyhow. So even if they do happen to get beaten by a HS wrestler, it’s only their pride that takes the hit. All in all, you usually only see the high level HS wrestlers entering these kinds of tournaments

Forest made a lot of college kids look bad yesterday. It could be a turning point for them. I would have to say most of them got up today with more fire than ever and maybe losing to a 9th grader will spark something they needed. Always look on the bright side.
