Clarion Open

Barraclough v. Zacherl (Clarion) Semis

Zac gets warmed for hands to the face
1 min in and no score
Zac in on a nice shot, Bar rolls through and defends
Most attacks coming from Zac in the first, but no scores - it’s 0-0 after 1

Bar chooses bottom
He’s out in :15
Bar in on a shot, but a solid sprawl stalemates it
Bar in another shit and he gets stalemated again
Zac takes a nice single and finishes it - Bar down 2-1 after 2

Zac takes down and he’s out quickly 3-1 now
Stalling called on Zac
Bar in on a couple of shots but can’t finish
In on a shot as time esports but drops a close one - 3-1...good effort by Barraclough there against a tough kid in Zacherl!

Joe Lee v. Bartolo (Clarion) FINALS

Nice Double by Joe to score 2
Escape Bart - 2-1
Joe has a single, lifts it and Bart tries to roll out...appears to have hurt his knee on the roll
Appears to be ok and Joe gets screwed out of a sure fire TD but gets choice and takes bottom
He’s out right away and it’s 3-1 now

Lee chooses bottom for the second and gets a caution
Then Bartolo gets one next
Lee reverses him to his back and gets 4 NF...still working for the pin and the kid cries out again and gets a stoppage while on his back getting “Zain’d”
Lee on top still and he’s looking to punish him now after the second stoppage - leg in and lots of cross faces - it’s 10-1 after 2 and Lee has 1:42 RT

Neutral in the 3rd
Bartolo in stall mode and Lee looks annoyed
Blast double for Lee and another TD
This one ends 13-3 after a RT point and Joe Lee wins the tournament!!!

Great job to Beau on his 4th place finish at a college tourney! Wyatt Henson (Iowa commit) and Matt Lee (PSU commit) were also in college action today at Clarion...

Wyatt dropped a 6-3 decision to the #1 seed and won 3 straight in consos and received a MFF in the final match to take 3rd.
Matt went 2-1 losing to the #1 seed, then getting a MD win and then losing by Fall to the LH kid...looks like he wasn’t ready for the College top/bottom game just yet

any other HS studs competing in college tourneys this week?

Last year Michael went up like 13-2 to Bulsak before gassing in the third and winning 13-9. That was his only decision win and everything else came by bonus (including 20-8 to Weiler)

Not worried about Michael, this was clearly an off tournament for him. I doubt he is regressing in the room.

Barraclough v. Senz (Kent) Conso-Semis

Senz takes a double and nothing there
Bar has a single high in the air and he finishes - up 2-0
Bar riding wrists tight and into a crab ride now
Stalemate called and we restart - RT over a minute now...then an escape - it’s 2-1 at the end of 1 and Bar has 1:46 RT

Bar takes down in the 2nd
He’s up to his feet and they go out of bounds
Up to his feet again and this time he escapes - 3-1
Bar hits a go behind off of a bad Senz shot and gets the TD - it’s 5-1
Bar rides him out for the rest of the period and has 1:56 RT and a 5-1 lead.

Senz is on bottom to start the 3rd
Bar has a leg in now and Senz is flat on the mat
Stalemate called and there’s under a minute to go, RT is locked
Bar has a nice crab ride again, but eventually Senz escapes - it’s 5-2
That’s how it ends! Barraclough in to the 3rd/4th place match now!

Nevermind, apparently that was for 3rd - Barraclough is done for the day and so is everyone else!

Our placers on the day are as follows...

165 - Joe Lee - 1st - 4-0
174 - Starocci - 1st - 4-0
197 - Beard - 2nd - 2-1
125 - Meredith - 3rd - 4-1
149 - Barraclough - 3rd - 4-1

-Joe looked great and improved from the last time I saw him!
-Starocci looked awesome...his final match was “safe” but he wrestled a smart and controlled match against a more seasoned kid
-Beard didn’t look his best, but I’m not too concerned about it just yet
-Meredith was the most entertaining guy of the day in my opinion! Fun matches and he got some hard fought wins today!
-Barraclough was also fun to watch and exceeded my expectations, he brought it to Zacherl and had a very impressive tournament overall!

-honorable mention to Shunk - he had a good gas tank, some cool moments from neutral and he never gave up...needs some mat wrestling work, but he was pretty fun to watch too today.

Ed Scott made the finals at 149 and lost to Zacherl 7-6.

I know almost nothing about Barraclough. Could he emerge as a sleeper who becomes a solid contributor as a starter?

Thanks for the updates everyone. Cell coverage was attrocious at UPJ. Couldn't even get this page open let alone Flo or track!

Barraclough was a 4x UT state champ who committed to Army but flipped when Cael called.

He had some good results at Fargo including wins over future D1 guys, but can't remember if he placed there.

He looks to fit the Pipher mold: would've been a starter and probable NQ elsewhere; at PSU an effective spot starter who will find some mat time at various weights and will eventually be a designated scorer at the Scuffle.

Living out west , I wouldn't call Barraclough a sleeper. He was a 4 timer who knocked off some big names over the years. He'd have been a 3 year starter at a lot of schools. He did wrestle at Sanderson wrestling academy. Getting him as a walk on is a steal.

anyone notice that he had a Nickal singlet on?

Doesn't that strike you as odd? Committing to West Point (and the military commitment that requires) is completely different than going to another university. Hard to believe that he was willing to do the military route, then someone convinced him to go elsewhere just to wrestle.

I don't think it was mentioned, yet...

Jon Consorti (who is no longer listed on the Penn State roster) was there, as well. Unfortunately, he lost 12-1 to Willy Girard/Bloom and 11-3 to Luke Werner/Lock Haven.

Here's a little background.

2017 Clarion Open: Brock Zachery 6, Nick Lee 4.

As we know Nick has come a long way since then, but I would assume Zackery is also a better wrestler 2 years later.

Barraclough was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Zacherl isn't a better wrestler right now than he was 2 years ago, but only because he's coming off a pretty significant injury.

Still, with the current recruiting uncertainty at 149/157, it's nice to have Barraclough in the fold.

He would hardly be the first or last person to have the military as his backup plan.

ROTC was an alternative maybe. If he applied to WP, I bet he applied for an ROTC scholarship too.

love this kid’s effort from lit’ ole’ DuBois,PA... always wrestles tough with lots of activity... fun to watch! Was sorry that he came up a bit short in Super 32 (4th as a 3 seed) but great results against in college boys in Clarion! He’s definitely on my list of “favorite non-PSU” wrestlers to follow. :D

Gotta agree with LP here. As good a HS wrestler Ed Scott is right now, Scott vs. Nick Lee would not be pretty.

Judging by this and some other Zacherl results at this tournament, he is a long way from rounding into his previous form. That's not altogether surprising from a guy who is 6th year and returning from significant injuries. Sometimes you never get all the way back. I'd say a lot more end up being a shell of their former selves than ending up like Ashnault did last year. Makes his (Ashnault's) performance even more impressive to me.

Where is he going next year?

Didn't Abe Assad (current freshman at Iowa) do the same thing recently? Gave a verbal to Army, then later flipped to the Squawks. And Assad was a top 10 or top 15 national recruit, IIRC. Of course, this was after Brands received the 3-inch thick binder.
