Cliff Kean Las Vegas Wrestling Tournament

No takedowns in the Storr v Chad Red match but Storr looked like he should've been given 2 late in the third when he looked like he nearly had a cradle locked up. Never squared and Red was able to recover. Justice prevailed when Storr was able to ride out in TB1, escape in TB2.
Red puts himself to his back to avoid those TDs at end of regulation

Looks like Steveson TF'd Va. Tech's redshirt frosh (Borst) in the first period.

Let us know what the crowd looks like.
went to a local pizza place downtown called "need pizza" (pretty good) but I didn't realize Dan Gable was signing autographs in there. It was too busy to grab food so we left. We need food to absorb alcohol......
I'm hopeful it's a decent crowd

My real question here and I don't know the answer for sure is this. No doubt Micic is banged up, many people are banged up. Cael held Cenzo out of the Keystone last year so it happens. But, are they concerned that wrestling 5-6 matches against tough competition may get him hurt or may make him lose? I have no problem holding him out if it's the former. I have a big problem if it's the latter. We'll never know the answer though.

A lot of this comes down to there being no real incentive for him to wrestle in this tournament. He's #2 ranked right now and the #1 isn't there. So, if he doesn't wrestle, he'll stay #2 so why go and risk getting hurt or risk losing. I'd like to see whoever wins 133 in this tourney move to #1. It's a meat grinder and the top 2 guys haven't really wrestled. Rather than slot guys in at the beginning of the season, I'd rather actually see them ranked by what they've actually done this year.
I'd rather see guys ranked based on what they actually accomplish this year as well. That doesn't mean they can't be ranked at the beginning of the season though. If #4 beats #3 while #2 isn't wrestling or hasn't faced anyone ranked or whatever, there is absolutely nothing stopping the ranking services from bumping #2 down. Nothing.

Related, the rankings aren't used for squat anyway. Tourney's are seeded by coaches' committees. The BIG (and I assume others) rely primarily on conference head-to-head records as the most important criteria, and they have every discretion to reward a wrestler who faced all comers vs someone who was 7-0 but was 'dinged up' and didn't face the top guys. While more complicated, NCAA seedings are the same. There are coaches committeed seeding every weight. That had no requirement to rank Kyle Snyder #1 last year. They could have said "1-1 vs Coon, and Coon wrestled alot more matches, so Coon is #1 seed". And they certainly didn't say "Intermat has Snyder #1 so he is the #1 seed".

Interesting ( to me ) Cliff Keen observations:

PITT is in 6th place at the tourney with 2 in the semis and 4 in the consolations. They are 5.5 points ahead of "top 10 Rutgers" and Rutgers has 2 in the semis and only 1 in the consolations. Hmmm.... is Pitt now top 5?

Chase Singletary is in the Semis......beating 9th ranked Conan Jennings and pinning 13th ranked Matt Stencel. He looks much more fit than he did in the Ohio State wrestle-offs. Pencil in Ohio State as a very solid team...…….especially if Heinselman goes at 125.

Gable Stevenson clubbed the Hell out of A.J. Nevills' head and got no warnings let alone penalty points. Props to AJ for hanging in there.

Luke Pletcher looks much improved offensively...….more points for Ohio State :(

Taleb Rahmani is fun to watch.

Demetrius Thomas of Pitt lost his first match and looked like a different wrestler.....with 3 Majors and a pin in consolations. He is fun to watch as well.

Nino Bonaccorsi was taking down Talylor Venz almost at will...….until he got pinned. Nino is an attack machine and very fun to watch.

What the heck is with all the Pitt compliments???

I know this has nothing to do with the Cliff.....but CONGRATULATIONS to Devin Schnupp on his FIRST DUAL VICTORY!! Well Done !

Singlespeed...the pride of the Cedar Valley.

Good observations Sportfan,

I agree that the Pitt kids wrestled well, Phillipi looked good and you are right, Bonnacorsi had 4 TD's of Venz w/ 1:50+ RT and up 3(4) in the 3rd when he got caught. I love the constant attacks, but he probably would have been better off making Venz come to him at that point.

Some good matches last night thats for sure.

Random observations:
Tournament has lived up to the hype regarding competition!
Does not appear to me that video challenges are available here. I know it would slow things down, but prefer to see correct calls made, even if it means reversing a refs original decision.
Seating is pretty low, so it is difficult to see all 10 mats, and score clock placement could be better.
Too bad there’s not an easier way to follow who’s wrestling all the time, than checking my phone.
Anxious for today’s rounds!
3 hour time difference is REAL, see my posting time.
Small school Clarion having a good showing here. Bulsak dominated former Bucknell RSSr Sleigh in a 1/4 final match of PA guys, and Zacherl looking ready to make podium in March.
Down about $75 bucks and up about 5 pounds; too many good eating options.

I've always been a fan of Pletcher. Though he did a nice job for Ohio State wrestling up his freshman year. Technically very sound with some dynamic offense when he chooses to use it.

Phillippi-Pletcher renewing the Westmoreland County rivalry. Good stuff at 133 this year. I’ll take the Derry kid.

I thought Gable Steveson was wrestling for Rutgers the way he clubs on his opponent....some ref has to call that at some point?

Seems like they wrestled a dozen times while in high school. Not sure Pletcher lost more than once to Phillippi. Kind of funny that they end up in semis against each other. I'll take Pletcher.

Agreed .... so far in his brief career he is coming across as a bit of a j/o IMO
I said yesterday that they way he was pushing that Michigan guy's head down constantly would have certainly been met with punches from me, if I was that opponent.

Can't wait to see someone give the chump a beating (wrestling, that is).

He would not have been a good fit at PSU imo.....regardless of how good or great he is.

I agree. He's actually at one of his perfect fits, as MN has never come off as the most respectful, sportsmanship based program in the land. Bunch of hyenas.

I am not one to compliment Pitt but they got a real steal in Micky Phillippi. He is a kid I wished that PSU had looked at. I know that his offense was not really prolific in HS but I thought he was a really good prospect. He was so close to getting out from under Lizak last night and Lizak's only point came on the RT. Lizak is supposed to be better than average on his feet, too. Phillippi took him down twice and the next time they meet, if they do, I expect Phillippi to get out from under him and the match won't be as close as it was last night and it wasn't that close last night.

You're right. I was never overly impressed with Phillippi when he was a prospect, but the dude just grinds.

Phillippi has the tools and I feel that in the right room he could improve his offense and become a hammer on top. He is already a good mat wrestler and with some help could hammer dudes on top. He has elite defense on his feet and with some help could create some good offense in neutral as well. I doubt he gets that help at Pitt but he'll make guys work for every point kind of like Dean Heil.

Its early but I am liking what I've seen from Gavin's guys at Pitt. Plus Phillippi also has Nico to work out with as part of the RTC.
Definitely. Granted, we were without two of our studs, but Pitt convincingly beat UNI a couple of weeks ago. They looked very good to this idiot.
