Asher took no prisoners.
15-0 TF in the 2nd period.

I was wrong -- this was the semis, not the quarters. Asher is into the finals vs returning S3 Bodie Marlow, who's headed to Pitt. This could be a state finals preview -- Marlow has several good wins this year, including a wild 26-17 MD over Abington's Brian Heard, who will be the 2 seed at states if he wins NE Regionals.

Asher beat Marlow 7-1 last year, no reason to think it'll be any closer today.

West Regional top 5 advance to states. Hutcherson only needs to win 1 consi match to qualify.

2025 NYSPHSAA State Championships

170 Pound Semifinal- #1 PJ Duke (MIVA) VS #13 Jonathan Hoffman (KM)

Period 1:
I might be going out on a limb here, but I'm going to predict a first period fall for PJ. Here we go! Hoffman is tall & lanky. Duke looks for a 2 on 1, then transitions to the head & then comes behind for the TD, 3-0. Duke cuts Hoffman, 3-1. Hoffman shoots, Duke counters & gets another TD, 6-1. Duke tries to cut Hoffman, but Hoffman gets a leg & locks on. Duke sprawls back & it's a stalemate, 38-sec left. PJ appears to have a hand injury. But, then he's back at it. Hoffman is still down. Duke cuts Hoffman, 6-2. Then, Duke immediately drops in on another shot & secures the TD, 9-2. Duke quickly cuts Hoffman again, 9-3. Duke drops right back in on the legs & has Hoffman on his back, but only gets the TD, 12-3 before Hoffman rolls to his belly. Out of bounds & restart, and then Duke rides out the period. 12-3 PJ after the first.

Period 2:
Hoffman takes down. Duke pretends to cut Hoffman, then catches him with an underhook & half coming up & takes Hoffman to his back. Duke adjusts, then gets the FALL in a period plus a pinch more!

PJ Duke FALL Jonathan Hoffman (2:10)

Match link:

PJ will face #3 Casey Liess (MCJE) in the finals, which begin at 6 pm Eastern tonight.
Hoffman was undefeated before that drubbing as well so he’s obviously a tough kid. PJ is just on another level

Asher did that to Hutcherson?
P1: T3, NF4
P2: E1, T3, NF4

Hutcherson might not place at states this year -- nothing against his talent, just that the weight is stacked. A lot of seniors, and several returning placers committed to D1 schools. NE Regional alone has 3 senior state placers headed to D1 schools -- so a returning S4 is capped at regional 3rd.

PaHawkeye will have to find a new young talent from the real WrestletownState to gush over

Excited for both Asher and Dalton to join. Asher just seems like he will be set up for success when his name is called. And Dalton, kid is a warrior. Strictly looking at his HS career stats, it’s crazy that his largest loss in HS was by 5 points to Vince Bouzakis (not including the injury defaults).

*thanks to EJ for correcting

10-5 to Vince Bouzakis, plus 2 injury defaults.

You are right misread the Bouzakis. And should have noted i wasn’t included the 2 injury defaults this year but you correct. I think one of them if i recall he was losing by a larger margin then 5

Bouzakis was as a freshman.

Your bigger point is still correct: Perry has been remarkably consistent. Other than his injury defaults, his worst loss in 4 years was probably his 2-1 OT loss to "Bassett's backup" Jackson Butler, who was a returning state placer.

When your worst career loss is to a returning state placer in OT, you're pretty good.

2025 NYSPHSAA State Championships

170 Pound Final- #1 PJ Duke (MIVA) VS #3 Casey Liess (MCJE)

PJ is a 3X NY State Champ going for #4. Last year he won at 160, 138 the previous year & at 99 pounds for his first one.

Period 1:
Here we go! PJ drives forward off the whistle working a 2 on 1. He hits a drag & comes behind for the TD, 3-0, then immediately cuts Liess, 3-1. Out of bounds & restart. PJ works a 2 on 1, then hits a slick ankle pick for another TD, 6-1. PJ cuts Liess, 6-2, then immediately hits another TD, 9-2. Out of bounds & restart, 1:25 left. Liess is still down. PJ goes optional start & concedes the escape, 9-3. PJ goes back to the 2 on 1 & bullies his way behind for another TD, 12-3. Out of bounds & restart, 1:07 left. Liess is still down. PJ goes optional start & gives up the escape, 12-4. PJ goes back to the 2 on 1 & then hits a sweet foot sweep for another TD, 15-4, then immediately cuts Liess, 15-5. Liess shoots, but PJ hops over him, like leapfrogs Liess, for another TD, 18-5. Wow! That was creative! PJ cuts Liess, 18-6. Out of bounds & restart, 19-sec left. Circling & head tapping to end the period. 18-6 PJ after one.

Period 2:
Liess takes down. PJ looks for a pinning combo, but no luck & then gives up the escape, 18-7. Circling & tying up. PJ drives forward & has Liess on the edge. Out of bounds & restart. PJ snaps & comes behind for another TD, 21-7. PJ almost lets Liess up, but then tries to catch him with a pinning combo as he's coming up. PJ maintains top position while looking for a pin. Out of bounds & restart, 1:14 left. Liess is still down. PJ's still looking for a pinning combo from top. He almost locks up a cradle, but no luck, then cuts Liess, 21-8. PJ hits a slick duck for the 24-8 Techfall! PJ's going to be a lot fun to watch at PSU!!!

PJ Duke TECH Casey Liess 24-8 (3:17)

PJ Duke takes 1st Place...and wins his 4th NY State Title!

Future 174? Red shirt and starter when Levi leaves.
Doubt his current weight class (170 lb) is indicative of where Duke will wrestle in college. He likely isn't cutting any weight, and/or his high school team lineup might be better with him at 170. But he wrestled at 70 kg at U20 Worlds only 6 months ago.

Still expect Duke to start his college career at 157; could move up to 165 at some point. Of course, lineup considerations may also be a factor.

Marcus Blaze Talking The GOAT Bump To 150 lbs And Perrysburg Trying To Win A 2025 State Team Title

The maturity and quiet confidence he has is almost scary, it’s like God made a kid specifically for PSU. The thought that he’s actually going to get better once he starts training with Cael & Co. is crazy. Assuming he steps in at 141 next year has me thinking that worst case scenario is 2nd place but I see no reason why he couldn’t beat Mendez.

Brackets are out:
AA: https://live.pa-wrestling.com/2024-2025/piaa-class-aa
AAA: https://live.pa-wrestling.com/2024-2025/piaa-class-aaa

Time permitting, I'll look at the full brackets. In the meantime, quick look at our commits:

Sam Herring, 46-4, SW-1, AA 139:
AA 139 is a 3-horse race. Herring got the 3-seed behind last year's 133 finalists Brandt Harer (53-0, Rutger commit) and Camden Baum (45-4, Purdue). The weight is otherwise very weak.

Herring will face Baum in the semis, winner gets Harer in the finals. Earlier this year, Herring beat Baum 4-2 and lost to Harer 1-0. This is winnable for him.

Dalton Perry, 39-3, W-1, AAA 145:
This is a solid weight. Perry got the 1-seed and should win, but it won't be easy.

Perry has a straight shot to the semis, where he'll face returning S7 MIchael Turi (38-2, Cornell). Perry will be favored to win.

The bottom half is less clear. S3 Eren Sement (50-2, Michigan) is favored but faces several landmines. He drew Beca's S6 Marco Frinzi (31-8, Columbia) in the quarters. Then in the semis he'll get either S5 McKaden Speece (40-4, Navy) or S4 Ramil Islamov (44-1, WVU). Islamov's lone 1 loss this year was 7-6 to Perry in the West Regional finals.

Asher Cunningham, 31-3, W-1, AAA 172:
Cunningham got the 1 seed and will curb stomp this weight. He will likely tech or pin the field. It's not a bad weight -- he's just so much better.

The bottom half has 4 contenders. Cunningham teched 2 of them at West Regionals.

The featured weight of the weekend will be AA 133, with S1 Jax Forrest (46-0, OKST) slated to face 3x S1 Aaron Seidel (54-1, VT) in the finals. They faced earlier this year -- Forrest won 11-4. Seidel is also the only 200-win wrestler in PA history. Barring injury, this match will happen -- nobody else at the weight is remotely near their level.

I have to root for CRN’s Eren Sement. Love seeing local kids succeed.

In the 133 final, will Bassett follow his idol and lose his final match? It’s the Iowa way. LOL.

One thing about Blaze -- other than the Nolf ankle band routine:

He goes for the cradle on every snap/go-behind. Doesn't always get it, but he's looking for it every time. He's gonna get a lot of pins in college with that as a re-attack given how good his stance/baseline defense is.
Sounds like someone didn’t get the memo that cradles aren’t done anymore.
