I could have sworn they expanded it to accommodate a 747 back in the Paterno years. I guess not.

They did not, they expanded it to handle 737s and 757s both are narrow body jets.
The runway is not long enough for wide-body which is why when presidents visit they don't fly in the "usual" Air Force One, but in a smaller jet in the role of AF1.
