Doomed to fail: Edwards at ASU Devils (link)

Certainly goes on in Power 5 football, but coaches are smart enough not to publicly discuss it. He's always been kind of an odd duck.

It'll be interesting whether the NCAA bothers to knock on the door if he actually tries to give cut players financial aid that aren't eligible due to career-ending injury/conditions.

The only positive spin is that this doubles down on Edwards' NFL experience and could indicate to recruits that it will somehow better prepare them for the NFL.

The fact that he has this job...... and the fact that some Univ President and AD approved of his hiring.......
Is proof positive that intellectual disability no longer needs to be seen as an impediment to one’s dreams to work as a College Football Head Coach, University Athletic Director, or University President.

The AD was his former agent.

So, in our culture he is toast because he is honest (saying what he is doing).... While guys like Sabin are celebrated and worshipped for doing the same thing but not mentioning it. Says more about us than him.
Agree. At least he is being honest about it. This is happening all across college football. At least the kids can still keep their financial aid. Disagree about him not being able to relate to kids. If you've heard this guy talk I think he could sell water to a well.

Please explain. The OP’s link has Edwards saying the cut kids would continue to get aid. He can’t give aid to an unlimited number of kids (if he were to cut a bunch), but the NCAA does permit some leeway for kids that have physical problems arise. The second paragraph in your link doesn’t speak to that.

You need to read more. They can receive other aid. It is in the link, in plain and straightforward language.

No, Saban is worshiped because he wins MNCs at Bama...

sounds a lot like coach talk to me to let everybody know there is a new sheriff in town and he is laying down the law about effort and commitment. Just every coach before Edwards wasn't stupid enough to give this speech to the press.

(1) Yes, they can, but it can’t be tied to the football situation. He can’t arrange anything special for his performance discards, especially at scale. (2) You directed me to one specific paragraph. I assumed you knew what it said and didn’t say. That’s not on me.

On the end it doesn’t matter because he was just trying to motivate some kids. It isn’t going to happen at any scale.

I am not sure what you are trying to say here, but if a kid is injured, and cant play anymore, you can absolutely give him aid and not count against your 85 limit. They just cant come back and play for you again. It's called a medical scholarship.

I’m talking about any kid cut that doesn’t fall into that category.

Edwards didn't say he was cutting players that had career threatening injuries. He said he was cutting players that either (1) didn't put in the effort or (2) weren't good enough. He then went on to mistakenly say that even after he cut them that he would be a good guy and keep them on financial aid. What Edwards probably doesn't know and/or understand is that you cannot do that (cutting players and then essentially keeping them on another type of schollie) without having that cut player still count against the 85 schollie limit. That is the point.

People are talking about ASU today. When was the last time anybody was talking about ASU?

Or professor.

Actually there is no such thing as a "medical scholarship." There is nothing that prevents a coach from dropping a kid from the team, for medical or any other reasons, and the university continuing to provide financial aid to that kid at whatever level it chooses.
