DT, Derrick Tangelo opts out of Outback Bowl

I see Derrick as a mid-to-late draft pick and every game here has the possibility to make a last impression for scouts with a good performance and maybe allow him to slide up a few spots. Definitely the most interesting decision of the 6 who opted out.
And we wonder why we get manhandled by Illinois on our own field? Two years in a row when scholarship football players do not want to play football….

Well, everybody's sitch is different. I hope he made a good choice for him and his family. he showed some good flashes.

I am not sure the bowls are "dead" but they have clearly taken on the role of a simple exhibition. Maybe not as bad as the NFL's "pro bowl" but unless you are in the playoffs, the players don't seem to care.

Wonder if some have already opted out during the regular season, or started playing not to get hurt? I can understand if you are going to be a high draft pick but this is starting to look odd.

Free agent, another guy that may last a week in camp. I really like what he brought this year however, and hope he makes it. Some of these guys really have over-valued their ability.
They are getting garbage advice. He will be an UDFA as you say.

Agreed, only first day guy is Dotson. I don’t understand why they even finished the garbage season if they they decide to skip the bowl game now and there is just no way they are going in the first two rounds and therefore won’t be making millions…maybe 60k as a practice squad guy.

Just cancel the game already
I think something needs to be done about this. Maybe even require the players to reimburse the school some non-trivial amount (the value of that year's scholarship, maybe?) if they opt out of the bowl due to anything other than injury/illness. Maybe with the school to pick up an insurance policy for anyone with a round 1 or 2 grade. If someone has paid good money to buy tickets and travel to a bowl game, they expect to see some semblance of the team that got to the bowl game. It's not fair to those who support the program that way to have people opting out, especially the week of the game.

There is a pretty small chance that a player will be injured badly enough in this one game to impact their draft stock significantly. Willis McGahee comes to mind - not sure he would have gone much higher - he was still drafted in the first round ahead of LJ Jr. even with his 3-ligament injury.

Tangelo has plenty of film for scouts to view, from his all-ACC season and from his year at PSU. I can't see another game played making a difference.

But what will likely make a difference would be any injury, even a slight injury, that would negatively impact Tangelo's performance at the NFL combine, or during PSU's Pro Day. The NFL seems to give a disproportionate weight to combine performances. So I believe he is doing the smart thing, and for all we know Franklin has given him advice to do exactly what he is doing.

Regarding the upcoming game, PSU has plenty of young DT's chomping at the bit to get on the field. And I can't wait to see how the young DT's perform against a quality opponent, as a preview of what we may see next Fall.........

It's all about injury prevention. Some of these guys making the later calls to opt out may have had a scare in practice or an actual small injury that they do not want to make worse. As much as people think a good game on film helps them, a bad game on film, even if injured, knocks them down more.

Interesting that Jimmy would be advising players to opt out. Looks like Jimmy is setting up the scenario we lost this game because of so many of our players opting out. Maybe he should have advised Cliff to opt out and get ready for next year.

I agree with you. This is like buying expensive tickets to an Adele concert in Las Vegas, buying the plane tickets, paying for a nice hotel room, and then finding out just before the concert that Adele isn't going to show up and an impersonator will put on the show instead.

For those who bought game tickets, plane flights, hotel rooms, etc., the Penn State athletic department should offer to reimburse them for their expenses. I wonder if a class action law suit would be in order.

Not sure what to think. A few days ago there was a thread about Football player versus Athlete. It is my opinion that there are very little football players left. Many are athletic primadonnas.

Yeah, it's a horrible trend and don't know the answer. Don't forget for most of our lives, no one opted out of bowl games. It just wasn't done. Playing in bowl games and bowl week overall was an honor and a blast for the players. The number of potential draftees who were injured was miniscule. Our chances of winning this game are also small.

I think a body of work is more important to the NFL than one game. Maybe a bad game could hurt for a player who is a borderline draft choice, but for the most part, the hay is in the barn.

My question all along is why did any of them play against MSU. A nothing game in terrible conditions where the risk of injury because of poor footing was very real. This bowl game is no more meaningless than that game...or Rutgers...or Michigan...or Maryland...or OSU. Any game after we lost to Illinois and were out of a chance for a B1G championship was meaningless. Would at least have been logically consistent to announce back then that you were opting out.

The eventual numbers 1 and 2 picks in the entire draft played in the dreadful Alamo bowl after the monumentally disappointing 1999 season. And the GOAT and eventual #2 pick played in the Fiesta Bowl just 4 years ago. Times are changing fast.

That's the situation I'm faced with. Even though the weather is going to be nice, the ticket prices are dropping drastically. Wish I would have waited till the last second to purchase tickets. But I can understand the players opting out. Who is really benefitting by playing in this game? Young players to get a chance to show their abilities and last chance to play for some.

There seems to be a dichotomy here between the welfare of the players versus the welfare of the team and maybe even college football. If this continues unabated, college football cannot continue. For instance, what happens if the two best teams are in a playoff bowl for the national championship and team A loses its star running back, a few of their best linebackers, and a couple of top OL to opting out. We no longer have the two best teams and team A players who stay are deprived of playing with their best teammates and having a shot at the championship. No, this cannot continue as it is unfair to fellow teammates. It is the end of college football.

Every college team should agree that when a new player signs his "letter of intent" agreement, it should include a clause that says, "The signee agrees to play in every game scheduled for the years the grant in aid is effective unless the signee is injured, ill, or has another valid excuse which is agreed with by the athletic department. Prepping for an NFL career is not a valid excuse. If a signee opts out to prep for an NFL career then the signee must pay back the full amount of the grant in aid."

Some of you need to quit crying. Game is meaningless even if they were playing. Best to get young guys some valuable experience to take into next season.

What is Franklin supposed to do? Ever hear of negative recruiting? Dear 5 star, don't go to PSU because they'll make it difficult to opt out and prepare for your draft combine. Agents and money obviously drive this show now.

Maybe meaningless to you. Counts in the record book. Every bit as meaningful as the game against Michigan State. Probably more meaningful than the game against Rutgers.

To even maybe kinda make that work you would have to make every athlete in every sport sign that, and enforce if for every athlete in every sport. So if some kid on a non money making sport in the spring term leaves to go get a job or a fellowship somewhere, and not be around for those seasons that are still going on in May/June when school is out, you shake him or her down for a reimbursement too.

Oh and you better then start making all scholarships guaranteed for at least 4 years and none of the year-to-year stuff that most of them are.

And never fire a coach mid season, tell your current coaches they can't leave mid season also.

Bizarre timing. Has he been practicing? Just wakes up today and decides? Decided 3 weeks ago then Franklin tells him today, dude you need to tell people you are not playing in the game, it is 3 days away and we look stupid when you are not out there....

Bottom line is these kids couldn't care less about these bowl games. The die hard fans are pumped and these players would rather be somewhere else. Franklin doesn't care either. I wonder how much they cared about the season after the Iowa disaster. Based on their horrendous performance, not much!

As much as I love to watch PSU play I would be fine if the game was cancelled due to "Covid protocols". Just end this charade.

I think it could just pertain to football and basketball. As far as telling coaches they can't leave at mid-season without a financial penalty, sounds good to me.

Wow. You took one tidbit of information and fabricated an entire story around it.

So my kid is going to be playing field hockey for Northwestern in 2023. I have had multiple parents suggest to me that she should forgo her Sr high school season.

Are you kidding? She loves to play the game!

Maybe we should expand the CFP to 8 teams then cancel the rest of the bowl games. You get 7 good post season bowl games. Let every team practice post season same as bowl eligible teams if they want to.
