E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles!!! Birds - Giants II Game Thread

Question for diehard Eagles fans -- or even casual ones (if there is such a thing):
Would you characterize the team's NFC East title and subsequent playoff berth as undeserved?
Reason I ask, is I was reading a blog/column on another site written by a Penn Stater and a diehard Penguins/Steelers fan but a noted Philadelphia hater that it was. Undeserved, that is.
Was surprised to see this, but maybe I shouldn't have been since he is so blind with hatred of the Flyers especially and I guess all things Philly.
I personally think he should grow TF up since he is 40-something, but n obvious toolbag.
Sounds like a closet Pitt fan to me.

If the Eagles practice squad had played the season as an additional team in the NFC East, would they have finished ahead of the giants and redskins?

No, but he and another guy who posts there (another PSU grad) believe Joe Paterno was a naughty boy in the Sandusky saga. I think they’re trying to look good among all the Pitt fans who post there.

By the way, I think the Eagles are a great story. I’m not that big of an NFL fan, but I do root for the Eagles. And Saquon.

Just goes to show, when you win your conference you should be in the playoffs, unless ya'all are trying to say they don't pass the look test.

if Lane is back, does Big V go inside to OG? I think so.

hard to say. I think Big V is better suited for OG. He does well in run blocking, but has issues with pass blocking. The other variable is that for whatever reason, he seems to do better when he knows in advance that he's playing a position, as opposed to going in cold. If Lane were to not be ready to go on Sunday, or to come up lame during the game, then V would be the natural to play RT. However, if he's spent the week practicing for RG, and/or has to switch to RT at game time or during the game, that could be an issue.

Stoutland and Doug P get paid the big bucks to figure these things out in advance. I hope they make a good decision.

Sanders, Ertz, and Johnson are along with Wentz probably their 3 best players. Any word on Jeffery or Agholor?

Jeffery is done for the year. Lis Franc, I believe.

Agholor has a knee issue, which seems to be a bit mysterious. He has been out multiple weeks. I think he may be done for the season and the team, for a lot of reasons.

I would be stunned if Ertz played this week. happily stunned, but stunned.

Tom, to your point about Big V, he seems to be a guy who really needs the practice reps.

Stoutland knows best. I am inclined to think that Pryor starts, as they were happy with how he did. I would keep Vaitai as the swing guy. Even if Johnson plays, he will be gimpy. I would want Vaitai in reserve.

Ertz has a lacerated kidney? If that’s the case, he’s not playing.

yeah, it has been somewhat mysterious. every injury/rehab is different, so it's quite possible that the length of time he's been out is legit. It just seemed each week as though we expected him to be back, and with very little said, he would be listed on Friday or Saturday as out for the game.

He earned $9.3 M this season, and will be a FA after the season. He's going to want a good chunk of change, as well as a long-term contract. The consensus seemed to be that the Birds liked him on the team, but would not allocate the amount of $$ he was seeking for a slot receiver, especially with expensive contracts to WRs Jefferies and Jackson already on the books/counting against the cap. With the injuries that those two WRs, there have been some rumblings that perhaps they'd try to get out of one of the contracts, but I'm not sure that will happen. I believe that both have guaranteed money in future years, and their contracts would count against the cap for several years. Plus, both of them are toward the end of their careers (relatively speaking), so there's no incentive for them to give up a lot of dollars in a re-working of their contracts. As such, I just don't see Agholor with the team next year. In addition, Ward, up from the practice squad, has looked very good in recent weeks, and the team is unlikely to drop JJ A-W (2nd round draft pick in 2019).

agreed. lacerated kidneys are, by all accounts, really painful, and not something to take lightly. Ertz has shown a high pain threshold, but I would also be happily stunned if he played this coming weekend.

I think there is a very low probability that Agholor is back. The only reason I don't say there is no chance is that he may get no offers from other teams, and the Eagles sign him to a one-year deal. It is best for him to have a change of scenery.

I think Jackson will be back. Part of that is because I think Howie and Lurie want to show Chip Kelly how wrong he was to release Jackson. Not the main reason he will be back, but I think that enters into it.

The one I don't understand is Jeffery. Maybe you've heard something on this that I haven't, Tom, but I thought it was a real headscratcher when the guaranteed his 2020 money early in the 2019 season. I thought it was a big mistake then, but now it looks like a colossal one. The guy played poorly, was hurt, and criticized the team/Wentz yet again. I know it could help them from a cap standpoint this year and enable them to extend some guys, but it hardly seems worth it. If they release him, it is something like $20mm in dead money. I can't believe anyone would trade for him, unless you gave them additional assets to take him.

I am happy with the late season run, but I hope no one in the decision making group thinks that all is well. This team needs to address A LOT of areas.

In all honesty, there have been a few of these extensions designed to free up short-term cap space, but that present this risk. Jeffrey is perhaps the most evident right now.

Jason Peters and Jason Kelce come to mind as well. It appears they’ll move on from Peters without too much damage. We’ll see on Kelce.

Let’s hope the new CBA and/or uncapped year helps the reset a bit.

IDK but the way I have been reading things, Jason Peters has no intention of retiring after this year.

I agree. He seems to want to keep playing. Lurie and Peters are tight, which may enter into this. Peters also said that he would be willing to consider a position change.

I love watching the guy play. Credit to Reid for trading a 1 for him back in the day.

they’re in a real bad situation with peters. The dude still plays dominantly for stretches, but those stretches are getting shorter and shorter and his stretches of bad play are getting worse and worse. He’s in the decline for sure. However how do you cut ties with someone like him who’s given everything to the team? I know they’ve done it before (trotter, brown/shepherd, McNabb) but his relationship with the staff and FO feels different than the others. I’d LOVE to see him take a cut to stay and pull a Manning and move to the sidelines as a mentor and backup, but I don’t see that happening either.

kelce needs to stay though. Still playing at a very high level and he’s such a cerebral center that he’s a great anchor for the OL
