I heard a hysterical story on Sirius today in a segment where they call out players /teams for stupid stuff. I will paraphrase but apparently there is a Rutgers promotional flyer for the football team that says
R [for Rutgers] you made of the same stuff these NFL tight ends are made of?
and then they list 5 TE's that are currently in the NFL.
the assumption is these 5 guys played for Rutgers right?
only thing is NONE of them did. The only connection is that somebody currently on the staff at RU was a coach where these guys really did play. To top it off there was one guy who went Rice, who is now in the NFL and the coach at RU was only a student asst at the time for Rice.

I guess they did this a few years ago with basketball as well.

The Sirius guys were having fun with this one.

Here it is. Apparently this is an edit to a recruit and wasn't really meant for the public. Rutgers did something like this earlier where they were boasting about how much money OSU players made in the NFL (because Ash was the DC there). Laughable.

Rutgers is the longest running joke in college football. They played in the 1st game and have done little else since...no major bowl games, no final rankings in the top 20... One of the saddest moments in their history came in 2012. They were 7-0 and ranked 15th in both the AP and BCS when they lost their Homecoming game, 35-23 to the Golden Flashes of Kent State. They lost 3 of the next 5 to end the season 9-4 and unranked.

That is really pathetic and have no idea how the RU coaching staff would have ever thought was a good idea. Something to talk about during a recruiting visit is one thing and discussing how the RU staff has developed many NFL level talents. But actually putting it on a poster and giving it to somebody is just plain dumb and tells you how desperate RU is.

Thanks for the post getmy, as i said the Sirius guys were poking serious fun at this.

Rutgers is also picked to finish last in the conference in men's hoops this year, by four basketball beat writers.

Of course, two of them have us to finish 13th; one has us 12th, and one has us 11th. But, we are not last.

From a marketing perspective, it's actually pretty smart, IMHO. If you have a situation where your staff is relatively new, and there isn't a well established tradition at the school, you market yourself in creative ways. Their recruiting competitors are sending all types of marketing pieces to the recruits, so to stay in the race, so to speak, Rutgers has to come up with something that's clever, and puts them in a good light.

But it's a reach to call that clever (it's a straight-up lie), and it puts them in anything but a good light. They are getting laughed at for it.

At first glance that makes sense, but... did the Tight Ends coach work with all of these players? Whose "system" is this? The OC? Then did the OC coach all of these players? If not, how is the "system" relevant? That's like Scrap putting out a flyer to a QB that mentions Kerry Collins and Todd Blackledge because they were on teams he was on staff at the same time. I mean, one connection is one of the coaches was a grad assistant at the time.

It's one thing to say this position coach put these people in the NFL. But this? Even the player seems to be mocking it in his tweet.

"Creative" is an interesting word. Some people used "creative accounting" on their tax returns and wound up in federal prison. I would not suggest the need for anyone at Rutgers to go to prison. If you coach for the Scarlet Knights, you are already there.;)

Look at the PSU press guide. In the coaches section, it lists players coached while coaches were at other schools or in the NFL.

Does it include photographs of the players wearing another school's uniform?? It doesn't bother me to see anyone tout the accomplishments if their individual coaches. With the way coaches move around nowadays, there's hardly anyone who can point to a long list of successful former players from their current school. I don't begrudge Rutgers for trying to promote their "system" either. But I can't imagine a Penn State press guide which includes photographs bragging about the success a player had at another school. Bragging about the coach - great. Bragging about the player and including a photograph of him wearing another school's uniform - counterproductive.

Without looking at it, I bet the players listed are players that were actually coached by that coach, not that were on the team but that coach had nothing to do with. I wouldn't expect the tight ends coach to list some defensive tackle that was on a team while he was over coaching offense--which is my understanding of what Rutgers did. If we are, that to me is bush league.

And I would think twice about putting pictures up if it meant showing other college teams uniforms.

Furthermore, I sure as heck wouldn't be talking about some "system." Like all of these coaches were coincidently coaching the same system at various schools.

Now, if they had said, Tight Ends Coach Smitty has coached all of these players into the NFL, that's fine. But it's my understanding, and correct me if I'm wrong, that's NOT what they did.

So they're saying the TE coach runs their 'system'? I'd usually say a team is running the offensive coordinators system, but when your OC is Mehringer I guess you have to get creative
