A person with knowledge of the conversation tells The Associated Press that the new Alliance of American Football spoke with Colin Kaepernick during its development about joining the league.

But Kaepernick wanted $20 million or more to consider playing with the league that had its debut last weekend.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because neither side has publicly acknowledged such talks.

The Alliance says its mission is to provide opportunities for players not in the NFL to continue their careers, with a possibility they could entice NFL teams to sign them once the AAF season concludes at the end of April. The league also approached Tim Tebow, who said he wanted to continue pursuing his baseball career. Tebow currently is in the New York Mets' spring training camp.

A message from the AP to Kaepernick's representatives was not immediately answered.

Kaepernick, then with the San Francisco 49ers, helped start a wave of protests about social and racial injustice in 2016 by kneeling during the national anthem at games. He has not played the last two seasons and has brought a lawsuit against the NFL for collusion to keep him out of the league.

He also fits the description for potential Alliance players, though his contract demands don't fit with the league's financial structure. After all, the AAF is entering its second weekend.

Players earn $225,000 over three years in the Alliance, but they also are free beginning in May to pursue NFL careers. Should they not catch on there, they are obligated to return to the AAF next season.

More than 80 percent of Alliance players spent some time in an NFL camp or on a roster. None is a star; the rare NFL first-round draft pick in the AAF is Birmingham running back Trent Richardson, who flamed out with the Browns and Colts, but who league co-founder Bill Polian, a Pro Football Hall of Fame executive, says could be "fast approaching" stardom in the Alliance after his strong debut.

It's uncertain if Kaepernick ever will play football again, but at his asking price

Just wondering, why do you care Sluggo? Does anyone really care about this Is this topic? Not me. If it is not PSU related in anyway.... It doesn't matter to me. Just curious, not being a dick.

the glory of topic view!! If you dont care, dont read it, nor post in it. Its marked OT, but at least it is about football or perhaps you would like to jump into the Amazon thread or maybe even get your taxes done cheaper than HRB!

It would seem that KC's understanding of football salary is on a par with many people's understanding of tax withholding concepts and other's about govts investing in job creation.

.....or opportunity cost.

Or maybe he has no interest in playing for the AAF but will do so at a ridiculous price tag. I bet a $10 million offer or maybe even less from an NFL team would have him back in a heartbeat.

BREAKING NEWS:

Kap's attorneys, Mark Geragos and Ben Meiselas, issued a statement saying, "For the past several months, counsel for Mr. Kaepernick and Mr. Reid have engaged in an ongoing dialogue with representatives of the NFL."

"As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances. The resolution of this matter is subject to a confidentiality agreement so there will be no further comment by any party."

Reid was picked up by the Carolina Panthers during the 2018 season and on Monday, the safety signed a $22 million 3-year extension. Kaepernick is still a free agent.

Soooooo......Kap back to the NFL?

not sure....Reid is in. Kap may have gotten some coin but we'll never know unless someone breaks the NDA. If he's asking for $20m, I don't see it happening. Plus, the photo his GF tweeted accusing the owner of being a slave owner is a huge problem for him. Unless he agrees to conform, I don't see it happening. But who knows.

Amazing how this guy has been story-tale'd as the best San Fran QB of all time; better than Joe Montana. I remember watching him his final year in the NFL and he was no better than RG3 or Joe Flacco. I know how I need to act as an agent of my company and if I want to keep my job; I abide by those agreed upon rules. It's capitalistic ideals. You have a job. You play by the rules of your employer. If you stray from your expected performance, the employer has every right to sever the relationship. Why does this guy get support from every bleeding heart ? Snowflakes.

Even if Kap didn't get paid quite that much...he got PAID. I think NFL knew there was clear evidence of collusion and needed this non disclosure so they didn't have to admit it. All in all, history is going to look back on him as a genius.

I see that the NFL decided to pay off Kaepernick's blackmail demands, and will apparently allow protests during the national anthem again. I'm now done watching or supporting the NFL. I'll strictly follow the AAF, and of course college football unless free agency gets too out of hand.

And all along we felt the OGBOT were the biggest idiots on the planet. Now they have competition for doling out frivolous amounts of coin.

60 to 80 million? That sounds extremely high
Reports out here in the Bay Area have put the number somewhere between $40MM and $50MM. No way Kaepernick settled that case for a mere $20MM. Moreover, no way that his attorney, Mark Geragos, settled that case for a mere $20MM. I went to high school with Geragos. He is a smart dude. A real publicity hound, but smart.

I'll bet he ain't playing any more, either. At least, not in the NFL.

Well seeing how the going rate for a starting QB is around $25 mil a yr. and he was out 2 yrs? That might be a ‘reasonable’ Number

Was headed this way as soon as they successfully subpoenaed electronic communication by the NFL and owners. No matter how you feel about it, there’s no way they didn’t collude to keep him out of the league - and the language the owners used was likely extremely problematic if it saw the light of day. Good for Kaep getting the money he would’ve made in the League anyway. Hopefully all sides can move on.

I think Kaep is a crap player but it is good this is settled. I doubt there was collusion, just some things the NFL didn't want made public.
NFL can move on now.

None of this happened until Kap hooked up with his girlfriend....she’s the driving force behind this, so she’s either the genius or the bitch depending on how you look at it and Kap is the p***y whipped, spineless toad.

I would have rather seen this play out in court since the settlement is a tacit admission of collusion, but really, the NFL was in a no win situation. Even if they didn't collude, a court drama is the last thing they want. By contrast, paying Kap to put everything behind them is not going to satisfy the fans who hated anthem protests (so, giving Kap the 'win' here is the last thing they want), but it might make the fans on the 'pro-Kap' side of things a bit more eager to watch again. Dunno. Bottom line, Kap knelt and won. Will be interesting to see how the NFL approaches this stuff going forward. Unfortunately, promoted patriotism is a bell they probably can't unring.

I really have never liked faux patriotism displays like those the NFL loves so much. It reeks of marketing, nothing more.

Half of the people bitching about Kap (who may be a jackass, but not for this controversy) were the same people who didn't remove their hats and talked through the anthem until it became a thing when some guys made a political protest.

I do imagine that the NFL did collude, they hate the players union and vice versa and with that kind of employer/employee relationship ownership tends to circle the wagons. Either way, the NFL can afford the loss and settling was probably a good business decision.
