Found the article to be interesting. Seems to say what I've sort of assumed for quite a while now. I would guess that this feeling probably meticulates down to College and HS ball as well.

I wonder how many guys on PSU's roster today "don't love football" but are doing it for other reasons. I would guess more than we would like to believe. I think the sport is at a crossroads these next handful of years.

They play a game for a living. They make a ton of money. If they do not like it, they can quit at any time. Must be so difficult making hundreds of thousands of dollars, at the least, to play a game. I would gladly take their spot... sign me up

I think what you will see is a lot more players retiring early hoping that the head trauma effects are greatly lessened if they don't stick around for those last few years. So get that big contract after the rookie deal, play a few years and put some money away. And then retire. I think you will see a lot more of that.

You make it sound so easy. The competition is cutthroat, something normal people like you and me don't experience, or can fathom. The risks of CTE aside, this sport takes a tremendous toll on your body; why do you think we keep hearing about players getting drugged up to keep playing? (Check out the Jeff Hartings stories from last week.) They stay at it because it's the only way they can make the kind of money they do.

Interestingly enough, I believe that Mike Reid fell into this category. It's not that he hated football, but he certainly loved music more. While a very talented football player with the Bengals, earning 1st team all-pro honors in 2 of those years, he chose to leave after 5 years, the minimum required for a pension and never looked back. The rest is history... numerous country hits, a grammy, and relatively good health.

I wasn't trying to implicate players on the PSU team, I was just saying that as a fan - we all want to believe that our players love the game and are passionate about winning. In reality, I think most guys are out for individual achievement, self preservation, and the biggest paycheck they can find. I don't blame them - I would too. But to romanticize the game, like many of us do, is ignorant to what is really happening. This article just hit home to confirm many of those 'outsider assumptions'.

You KNOW they don't love the game?
I don't KNOW almost anything. I do KNOW they left the team. Do you KNOW why?

Slow down there EPC. I just mentioned a few players whose departure wasn't fully explained, to my knowledge.

By the way, how do you know what you know? And how do you know what you know is true?

Now leave me alone.:)
