The whole “holding center” thing is absolute garbage. A wrestler can be completely passive while “holding center”, while the other guys takes multiple shots and gets put on the clock. Absurd.

Holding the edge is sooooooo much better.
I think of RBY style vs Iowa style. Iowa tries to tie the opponent up and push, push, push. RBY likes to attack from space and use his quickness. I don’t think RBY holds the edge at all. RBY’s style is rewarded in Folk and Iowa’s style is rewarded in Free.
I prefer RBY’s style and Folk.
I think you’re dramatically oversimplifying. Watch Starocci, Brooks, DT, Nick, . All of them are very good stalkers, no matter the style. They take ground, keep you off balance and, in Freestyle, generate a ton of 2 and 4 point offense off of the “peril” they put their opponents in at the edge. Even Gilman has increased the 2’s he gets with the guys he drives to the edge.
Compare all that to the last two Brooks vs Hidlay folkstyle matches. I’d love to see Aaron to wrestle Trent again in Free—it would not be pretty.

My point is this…the guys you mentioned take ground AND are aggressively taking shots as well. However, in Free, a guy can control center AND be passive in their offense and STILL get rewarded. That is the kind of wrestling I dislike.
Too many think green means stop to see if it turns red before moving forward through the intersection.
It can happen, sure (Chance might fit the bill a little this last weekend). With the step-out rule, the edge is much more of a thing, and some people will use it for "negative wrestling."
But I still feel like overall, what it does is increase the chances for action on any given exchange. I've seen people say "like the Iranians do" in this thread when talking about this strategy. I haven't watched enough of all of the Iranians to say for the whole country--but I will mention that Yazdani uses the edge to score a bajillion points. He 10-0s just about everyone not named Taylor. When he wrestled David, he definitely tightens up, and takes very few chances that might end in a scramble. That's the only way he'll ever beat David, but it's a major exception to the rule. If, in Freestyle, you're the superior handfighter, and can move people off center, what you have is an advantage to score more points. Most people take advantage of that.
I would just like to see Trent wrestle Aaron one time in folk - it would not be pretty!

Excellent thread. Yes, folkstyle is better than freestyle. In almost every way.
Everyone is allowed to have an opinion about the sport.
But why do posters pop into freestyle event threads to bitch about freestyle?

It's not the time or place.
When it gets right down to it, wrestling is regulated combat and folkstyle is closer to the real world.
In the real world, even at 6 years old fighting on the play ground (we used to do that before boys were treated as defective girls whose natural rambunctiousness was to be suppressed with Ritalin or worse). I can't even imagine teachers tolerating our favorite lunch time game "kill the guy" (sort of like rugby).
Folkstyle (even with the 3 point TD) puts greater emphasis obtaining, maintaining and increasing control over an opponent. If a match is tied at the end of the second and the guy in the top position is down 55 seconds riding time, I find it a test of skill that he rides the full two minutes. Now if it was up to me, I can live with the 3 pt TD, (although oddly, I think I saw a lot of reversals this year) as long as the reversal has at least thew same scoring value. Of course, I'm such an atavistic individual that I'd bring back the superior decision, if for no other reason other than the only way you should be able to quit early is a pin and both wrestlers should have a chance at it for a full seven minutes. The great thing about a few years ago was Nickal, Nolf and Retherford going for the pin, noy just the TF.
I hate the push out rule, *it's Sumo without the cool ancient rituals), the "par terre", the ability to get back points without actually holding the opponent on his back and the ten point tech. I understand your point and get your frustration . My guess is and i am guilty of it is we are all passionate about wrestling and PSU wrestlers. So when something does not go “your way” or a rule seems dumb and it affects an outcome we post hastily and probably do not always think things through. We just start bitching and complaining ever though we know the rules ahead of time. I think most are folk style guys and get irritated with freestyle rules. Just my guess.
For instance i commented a little bit about JB and his antics against Messenbrink. I stand by what i said 100%. I could say more but it was nice to see most see through what really happened. Then Willie makes a post on twitter and it pissed me off in so many ways. I wanted to blurt out so much stuff but just said forget it, don't waste your energy on him. Geez wildturd has been right about Willie all along. 😂
Once again somebody argues that the wrestler giving up the pushout point is a defenseless victim, did not step out voluntarily, and/or is incapable of adjusting to a rule that they already compete under starting in youth.
We should want fewer matches like these.
I did not say they are a defenseless victim, i just don't think its worth a point, especially when TD is two. Read the post, don't read into it. I'd have no problem if getting shoved out three times resulted in a stalling or passivity call.
I like folk better, especially if ref forces wrestlers to stay active. I don't like the extended challenges in folk. It seems freestyle makes much quicker decisions on challenge calls.
Willie went off on his podcast last eve. Unfortunately he was probably not completely sober as he went off. I agree with some of his rhetoric but I don't think it came from a balanced perspective. He went off on PSU fans - ok by me. Said Nolf ran the 2nd period. he is correct but Jordan pushed him to the edge. Also agree Jason should have been warned and a point. But bottom line, JB didn't score and Nolf wrestled. Then went off on the singlet pull. I see his point but certainly appears 'emotional' and definitely a one sided view. Too bad as he does have a voice in our sport.
An aside - his language could be cleaned up since a lot of kids listen as well.

Just as exciting as mens.....even more so as the quality of women's wrestling increases exponentially. Different things to enjoy and admire. Deal with it. 
I will say that after sitting through the trials this weekend if I never have to see another Greco-Roman match ever again it would be too soon.

This 100%. You watch like 100 Greco-Roman matches each time saying, "this is the last one I'm watching." Then there is an awesome toss and your hooked again. Jason moved, circled and stayed present. Jason also was the only wrestler in the match with Burroughs to take a legitimate shot.
I'm gaining at least an appreciation for freestyle. Some of the scoring I don't quite understand yet. But I think I grasp the basics enough to enjoy watching it.
It helps a bunch to have a commentator who has don't it on a high level. While the guy on the trials broadcast wasn't the most exciting guy to listen to, he did a good job of explaining the action.

Greco is still more exciting than soccer.
Soccer's great for kids, big field, one ball, two nets, they run around and expend that boundless energy, but watching it is insane.
While I'm thinking of it, aren't you glad wrestling fans aren't soccer fans?
Funny you mention that. I'm actually freezing my ass off watching my daughter play soccer right now. The thermometer says 46 but it feels way colder. Still better than Greco.
That sounds a lot like my golf game. Sucks for 99 swings in a row but that one perfect shot keeps you going for more self abuse.
I grew up with folk, so I prefer it. Folk has its fair share of painful nuances to power through. However, I have come to appreciate (and slowly learn) and enjoy watching the other wrestling styles. This weekend is the most I have watched Greco…I actually liked watching it. I like the distinctive of each style that sets them apart from the others.
Maybe they were setting themselves on fire as a protest. Like, "I'd rather burn myself alive then watch this match."
I actually used to enjoy soccer, but the constant diving and miraculous recoveries were too much.
Well, self-immolation seems to be a "thing" now, so you might be on to something.
Take away offsides in soccer and it would be much better. The idea that a contest has one or two scores a game when the goal is huge just confirms that the rules dictate the scoring opportunities.
