From my local paper- Rivers says he had no relationship with Franklin

Player's father.
So what?

There are probably at LEAST a dozen kids on every squad who think the coach is a jerk
When you're talking about a coach who didn't recruit all those kids, probably at LEAST 50% of the kids he didn't recruit.

Parents? Especially fathers?
If their kid ain't one of the starting 22,the coaches are imbeciles.......obviously
If the kid IS one of the starting 22, the coach is only an imbecile 1/2 the time.

Good grief

nothing says class like ripping a kid who decided to play somewhere else. Is it late in the game? yes. Does it suck for Penn State? Yes. Does it suck that the GF played a huge part in this? Yes. There are other factors as well on both sides.

So lets go and rip on a 17/18 year old kid. My god you are like jilted lovers who show up at a 25 year class reunion with an ax to grind.

And next year when a kid is debating to play of us or Pitt or Ohio State. There will be posts about how bad those fans are at the schools that are giving a kid crap. See L. Wade and what people on here said about Pitt fans. Apparently Penn State fans are no better than other universities.

Also this is a damn business that puts the "student"-athlete at every disadvantage once they sign on the dotted line because the NCAA is a bunch of DH's.

Who cares where Rivers goes, who cares where the next kid goes. Who cares about Franklin, Paterno or what not. Penn State is bigger than any one individual. Stop pissing and moaning.

Shut up.

A few current players and those leaving early feel the same about Franklin.

Not everyone has the same perception of the man.

Glad he is our coach but there are some issues that he needs to work on.

The reality is that there are 85+ kids on the team and only so many hours in the day. Franklin is probably working 7 days a week. I'm sure some kids feel like they are just a number. At the same time, there different personalities at play. Not everybody is going to get along. And I'm sure there are former players of Paterno who felt the same.

He should, however, have kept quiet about Franklin. Perhaps it came off the wrong way but he should know better.

It sucks that Rivers left, especially because of when he decided to let PSU know. I don't care what his reasons were. However, a lot of the posters slamming him should actually read the article, or read it more skillfully. He did not, as the OP claimed, say he had no relationship with Franklin. What he actually said was this:

"Coach Franklin, he was good but he just didn’t interact with me as well as Coach Fuente did.”

Blasting a kid for choosing to go elsewhere does not make one a good fan. Focusing on those who choose Penn State does. We're better off showing more class than - for example - Pitt fans when it comes to posting here. Anyone with half a brain knows this board represents a very small segment of PSU fans; all you have to do is attend a few games against our "big rivals" to see that. However, negative posts here give other fan bases ammunition to talk more shit about PSU, something we don't need.

Okay, stepping out of the sermon box now.....

Ummm. Yeah. He did

First sentence. Paragraph 12

"I didn't have a relationship with Coach Franklin," rivers said of the penn state coach ....

I don't care that he left.
I don't care that his high school coach preferred he attend the in-state university. That's a different deal than what happened with Wimbush.
I don't even care about the girlfriend, dumb reason as that is.

I do care about committing years ago, and then decommitting 2 weeks before LOI day, particularly when it's clear from this article that the decision was made a long time ago. It's wrong, and I don't care how young he is, it's still wrong. His parents at the very least should have pushed him to do the right thing.

As I said in another post, if this is the way he acts and the way his parents also act, then PSU will do fine without him.

My thoughts exactly.

I agree. Rivers brought his GF to campus to meet CJF and she thought highly of him to post this on twitter. Too bad he just didn't tell it like it is. He's on the VPI campus every other weekend to see his girl and wants to keep it that way.

He's more interested in playing house with his GF than playing football.

Well said. I also care that he bad-mouthed Franklin. Assuming that he did not have a good relationship with Franklin compared to fuentes, there was no reason for him to say what he said. It was said above that he may have felt a need to publicly state that he chose virginia tech for more than his girlfriend. Fine. All he had to say was that he developed a good relationship with fuentes and the other coaches and felt that virginia tech was a better fit ( ). He didn't need to criticize Franklin in the process.

Some people are willing to excuse these kids because they are kids, but it is common sense even for an 18-year-old that you don't attack another coach in the media.

Not everyone is going to like the head coach. Plenty of past players hated playing for Paterno. It doesn't mean anything.

The kid screwed us, but it's not his job to look out for Penn State as an 18 year-old without ties to the area.

It is the job of the coaching staff to have maintained or recruited a plurality at that position and they didn't do that successfully.

Is this how I would have acted at that age? Probably not. But I've never been in the limelight as a highly recruited football star...

I didn't choose PSU until after already almost paying to matriculate to F&M. Kids will be kids.

This ugliness isn't attracting any recruits, that I can tell you.

Except, of course, if they flip to us. LOL

I would not be thrilled if a kid decommitted from a school right after posing with that school's recruiting class and then committed to Penn State, all just two weeks before signing day. While nothing is perfect, Penn State has a tradition of recruiting and then graduating high-quality kids who buy into Success With Honor. I don't want to see Penn State on the receiving end kids who do not exhibit those values. Of course, it has happened, but those kids typically don't last in the program very long.

How can the staff, as you put it, recruit a plurality to the position? There are only so many schollies to hand out. if they have alloted one that year for that position, and he committed, they can't have two more commitments in case the others decommit.

The best they can do is keep in touch with other prospects in the even one decommits, which is probably what they did.

If you're talking about over the course of a couple of years, they don't have 100% control over the situation. The kids (sometimes irrational at that) are making the decision (or sometimes the parents are). If they successfully recruit 90% of the positions and fall a little short of ideal in 10%, that's not bad.

I belive he does not want "people" to think he just followed his GF. If he did, so what? Maybe THAT was the decider. But in the world of sports, etc - never admit that you decided YOUR future because of your GF. I really do wish him well, he is a kid that maybe should have better ADULT guidance. Not to pick PSU, but to keep your word, or move on with some dignity. That is not the case here.

Ding ding ding we have a winner. This was just a CYA move to basically not make him look like a bitch for following his gf to school. In the nicest way I can put it. If it works out for them great ... but the #1 reason ... by FAR ... was because of her.

I'm not saying it's an easy job... just saying that it's certainly more their job than his.

Some things Franklin needs to work on! Not every player loves him? I'll be damned. We need a coach who has 100% approval rating with his team. Didn't click with this recruit? I'm outraged:mad:. Franklin didn't know how to utilize the Hope Diamond either.

"players only love you when their playin...." Wonder what Lombardi's approval rating in the locker room was in real time?
Taking Rivers' word about his decision should hold as much weight as his commitment. Notice he didn't mention his girlfriend at all. I'm sure he didn't want that to be the focal point of discussion.....and rightfully so. He made a choice. PSU isn't for everyone. Get over it.
Got news for everyone, even when you coach at the high school level, you have faculty, parents, coaches of other sports and local "experts" that hate your guts.
I'll take Franklin even though he doesn't know how to coach on game day and is nothing more than a used car (snake oil) salesman. Jeezzzz.....

Fuentes? Is this VT's coach?

Player's father.
The biggest problem in sports in all levels below pro are parents. I'm not speculating. I'm speaking with 44 years experience as a high school coach, athletic director and league administrator. Actually, I even know a father whose actions got his son cut from a professional baseball organization.

He actually did say that. And it's comical because that's literally the opposite of anything that's ever been said about James Franklin.

Kid should shut his mouth about PSU from here on out.

I agree that he should not have said a thing about Franklin. This is a case in which he does not want to get criticized for flipping, so he fires off a pre-emptive strike to rationalize why he backed out on his word. He has some guilt about his decision, and he doesn't feel comfortable with the way it went down. He thinks Fuente wants to be his friend if he wants to see pictures of him snowboarding. Oh, well, he'll find out soon enough.

Oh geez. Based on feedback from other recruits and their parents I find that nearly impossible to believe. Just man up, admit you followed your gf to VT and move on. I'll leave it at that.
He is p whipped so man up is not an option

Curious as to what you DO care about, seeing as how you are on a Penn State football message board.

So we lost this kid because their coach texted him looking for pictures of him snowboarding and CJF didn't?

Got it.....:

What does this even mean? Does anyone know who to contact at Berkshire Hathaway Home Services to ask why their agent is calling those associated with Penn State child molesters?

(yes, I get the a$$hole comment preceding that, but it doesn't make light of child abuse)
"Rick" is an asshole, no doubt. So is "Ron".

well, "Rick" joined twitter in January of 2017 so its probably not a real account, just someone trying to cause trouble.

I was asked a question and I posed an answer. Take it as you wish.
