From my local paper- Rivers says he had no relationship with Franklin

I belive he does not want "people" to think he just followed his GF. If he did, so what? Maybe THAT was the decider. But in the world of sports, etc - never admit that you decided YOUR future because of your GF. I really do wish him well, he is a kid that maybe should have better ADULT guidance. Not to pick PSU, but to keep your word, or move on with some dignity. That is not the case here.

Well as we all know, Pussy is undefeated.

Work on relationships with kids that were recruited by the guy before him.
True story - a friend of mine was a 4 year starter at PSU in the 80's and has nothing but wonderful things to say about JVP, the way he ran the program, how he treated the players, etc... He also says JVP never spoke one word to him for his first three years in the program. Not a word. In fall camp of his senior year Joe pulled him aside and told him he was doing a great job in the classroom, keep it up.
This kid was not bothered in the least. He didn't need to be coddled. With 100+ kids in the program, plus possibly 100 kids PSU is currently recruiting, it seems logical the head coach may not have a personal relationship with every one of them.

Oh geez. Based on feedback from other recruits and their parents I find that nearly impossible to believe. Just man up, admit you followed your gf to VT and move on. I'll leave it at that.
Why would he follow his godfather (gf) to Virginia Tech? Seems quite silly actually. ;-)

Well.......

There were 2 four-year starters in the 1980s:

Tony Sacca (who was 80-90s)
And
Shane Conlan

IIRC

Sacca - I'm sure Joe had LOTS of words with Sacca. :). Or Sacker, as JVP would say

Conlan? I doubt if ANYONE wanted to talk to him much....and I doubt he would have cared

Was D.J. Dozier a 4 year starter? What about Steve Wiz? I know he started as a sophomore but can't remember if he started as a freshman.

He broke his word, he knows it and if he's a decent kid he probably feels guilty. So if he can blame somebody else he can feel better about what he did. It's not the end of the world.
Well, I guess when we live in a society where someone blames someone else for their actions, we can't expect anything else....

Wiz - No. Didn't start as a FR. I think Moules and Frerotte started ahead of him......but, whoever it was starting his FR year, it wasn't him

Dozier wasnt the starter as a FR (Jon Williams was)......but, Dozier was the leading yardage rusher (all four years he was here). I don't think that has happened before or since at PSU

But those were two that I woulda' thought would be good possibilities as well

Couple thoughts:

- I'm betting Fuentes asked to see pictures of Rivers GF not his snowboard

- if a man approaching 40 asks to see pictures of my snowboard while recruiting me, I think he is a phony. Dylan will too when he gets a little older

Best of luck to the kid. I will never fault a kid for deciding where he wants to attend college. He may love it. He may regret it. Both parties will move on

Dylan "Sewage" Rivers needs to stop trying to convince himself he did the right thing. No you broke a commitment and your parents are just as bad coming up to HV this weekend to deliver the news in person. Kid just has no class.
Just stop with the name calling. You sound like a teenager yourself.

The kid looks bad, no doubt. If he never "connected" with Franklin then how could he have been 100% committed for...14 months? That doesn't really make any sense. He followed his GF to VT and apparently doesn't want to say that was the reason why he bailed on a team he was 100% committed to so late in the game.

Having said that...I do think it's time to

Pretty sure ripping the kid for his thoughts and decisions make the adults look like a d-bag not the kid.

Nope. Not in this case. Every indication would reveal that there is no reason to give the Rivers clan the benefit of the doubt. I'm glad he's gone.

That's what most fan bases say any time a kid flips yet when a kid flips to our school they're praised. It's hypocritical at best. An adult simply wishes the kid the best and accepts he's entitled to his opinion especially when we have no clue what transpired.

A few current players and those leaving early feel the same about Franklin.

Not everyone has the same perception of the man.

Glad he is our coach but there are some issues that he needs to work on.

Considering the only kids that left early is Sickels and Godwin, and Sickels told Franklin he loves him after he suspended him for 1/2 game for OSU and Godwin was the man at PSU, I'd say I don't believe you. Now the older players sure--they went through 3 coaching staffs.

Sorry, should have been more specific. The player in question was '79-82.

Every coach is going to have some players that dislike him. The guys that are gone clearly didn't like Franklin. Especially Donovan Smith. They have more insight than we do. To ignore their opinions is just keeping yourself in the dark. Franklin is winning games and recruiting well right now. His flaws are going to be overlooked or ignored

While it's clear that no fanbase has more experience with kids flipping to other programs than Pitt does, the day I start taking advice from a Pitt guy is the day that I start praying for impotence or incontinence.

Who's the Pitt guy you're referencing? Not now nor have I ever been a Pitt fan. I'm a college football fan that roots for Penn State above anyone else. I'm just able to discuss things rationally without attacking like a child

He brought this program to an astonishing finish this year. I'd say he's done what he needs to do and perhaps it is others who have issues to work on. That is all.

You, for the record. Yes, you. We weren't born yesterday.

Weren't any 4 year starters over that span

Of course, your buddy wouldn't be the first guy to "overstate" his career

Not that it matters :)

Still a good story

As a fan you have a singular exisctatuon. However like any other organization the program and the people that are part of it could all use improvement

It's not a complicated concept

Nope, I was a student at the time and can vouch for his career. I know you will figure him out very soon

If you consider Tony Sacca a 4 yr starter, Dozier was a four year starter. Sacca started 5 games as a frosh with Lance Lonergan and Tom Bill starting 3 a piece. Lonergan actually started the final 3 games of the season as Sacca was struggling. He was sacked 8 times by Derrick Thomas in the Bama game. DJ started 9 games at TB as a frosh. Williams started 2 games at TB and 3 at FB because DJ won the starting job.
