Front page, "Hill committed but looking". What does that mean?

If you're committed, you aren't looking.
If Penn State decided to pull his scholarship offer today, would you say the same thing about James Franklin? Until he signs the L-O-I in February, he has the right to keep looking.
I remember reading about a kid sitting at a table with the L-O-I to Alabama sitting in front of him. He gets a call on his cell phone from Nick Saban telling him they have no scholarship for him. He ended up signing with Arkansas, a school he'd never been to and knew nothing about.

Right - he's looking, so he's not committed. Personally I'd prefer he not be listed as a commit until he decides he's finished looking. These soft verbals are what feeds recruiting news cycles when 'flips' happen.

My advice is don't pay attention until NLOI day - everything else is meaningless until then.

I suggest we just stop talking about him. If he comes, he comes. If he doesn't come, maybe it's more likely someone like Hamlin will. On the other hand, every time someone asks him, he says he is still coming here.

He certainly says all of the right things, and it's possible that the assholes who follow 17yr olds around and write stories about them are just trying to get clicks, anyhow.

Turn it around. You don't think Franklin's still looking? If he can get a better kid at the same position, he will recruit him and sign him, this kid be damned. Better yet, the posters here would be singing his praises for getting the higher ranked kid. This commitment crap seems to go one way. Wait until the kid doesn't live up to the impossibly high bar set by the recruiting gurus. He will be savaged unmercifully here.

"These soft verbals are what feeds recruiting news cycles when 'flips' happen." This is exactly why I decided not to feed that beast any longer, and dropped my membership to the Lions Den.

This is the best advice. I don't blame any kid for taking their full allotment of visits, whether they verbal first or last in the process, but it can lead to fan-base frustration.

Hill has been visiting Michigan State and Michigan since he committed to PSU back in February I think it was. His brother plays at Michigan and some of his friends/teammates are being recruited by UM/MSU and I believe one is committed to MSU. The key thing to remember is that though Hill has visited the other schools he has also visited PSU a number of times as well. As long as he keeps visiting PSU then I think Franklin will hold on to him. Obviously with all these recruits how PSU does on the field this season is critical.

What it means is he'll go to Penn State unless someone presents him with a better opportunity before signing day and is able to convince him it's a better opportunity. It's a commitment...but he's keeping his fingers crossed.

I am sure a lot of these kids want to see a good team record for this year. We need to win 8, or it won't just be Hill who is looking around. We win less than 8, and the negative recruiting about JF's gameday ability will ramp up big-time, and we'll see the hate. We win 9, we're more than fine. We win 10, we're darlings again. If we win 11, it will be recruiting heaven. And if we win 12, ah forget it, we're not winning 12.

He will end up at either MSU or UM. Bank on it. May as well just get it over with now and stop dragging it out

Franklin may be looking but that doesn't mean that he will pull Hill's offer. I don't know Franklin's history at Vandy but has he ever pulled a scholarship (from a kid that has verballed) simply because he found a better option. I don't ever recall Paterno doing so. And to suggest that we as fans would be applauding Franklin for pulling an offer in favor of a higher ranked kid is presumptuous. I'm not saying some fans would approve, but I would personally be bothered by that and I'm sure a majority of the guys on this site would as well.

Are you clairvoyant? His agent? His parents? This is the biggest decision that this and all other recruits will make at this stage of their lives and he needs to make the right decision for him. Hope he signs with PSU, but anyone who thought MSU and Michigan weren't going to be all over this kid like bad breath from the moment he verbaled were deluding themselves.

I'm not so sure now. I thought he was a 100% lock to MSU a month ago. However, WOTS is that he's surprisingly firmly committed to Penn State.

Penn State fans want to pay attention to Donnie Corley. If he goes green, I'll be shocked if Hill doesn't follow suit. They are very close. You want Corley to go anywhere else.

It's like telling your girl, yeah we're engaged but I'm screwing all you friends before we get married so I don't have to cheat on you later.

The longer it drags out the less likely he sticks in my opinion. A lot of recruits do this but he continues to visit. I feel like he feels guilty and perhaps it's his parents suggesting he keeps his word. In the end when the game is over and he MUST make a decision he is a Spartan IMO.

I'd say the opposite is the case. Hill has been to EL numerous times since being offered by Dantonio (he offered after the PSU commitment). Hill is very close with the players and coaches. If he was going to flip, it would have happened after 10 visits to MSU. The key is Corley, or Penn State having an awful season.

Yeah, I think that our season record holds the key. If we win 8, we're in good shape with him. If we beat Michigan, that will eliminate them. If we beat MSU, we definitely keep him. If we tank, he won't be the only recruit to bail.

If he were inclined to flip based on coaches/distance/friends, he probably would have done it by now.

There are occasional flips, however, when you look across the commitment landscape, very few of the initial commitments actually flip. What makes it seem like there are a lot of flips, the media is all abuzz about every one making it seem like there are many flips. They aren't that frequent.

If you're committed, you aren't looking.
It is a joke being perpetrated by Adam Friedman and other Rivals reporters to cause churn. He has repeatably stated that he is committed to PSU. Since he lives so close to MSU and Michigan and his friends are being heavily recruited or are commits there, he has gone for some free eats and for a day trip. Big deal...Friedman continues to peddle the baloney that he is wavering but he is not.

Exactly. Sadly, this "game" goes both ways and neither side's level of commitment is locked in until Feb. We may not like it, but it's reality.

If Hill does leave, the odds for Hamlin go way up...so either way, im not worried. Depth at CB is not an issue. If he leaves he leaves, he isnt making or breaking the depth chart.

Hamlin's decision is not at all based on Hill's final choice, as you suggest. Hamlin will not be at PSU on 2/3/16.

Eh, I'm not sure about that. I'm sure he won't be at Pitt, and I don't think he'll be at ND, either. Word is either OSU or PSU.
