Gable Steveson saga

He is athletic but not very big. NFL lineman are built like houses and athletic. Gable does not seem that big.
I suspect he'd be ta4geted as an Edge rusher/ His size and weight are fine for that position.

$.02 – This rudderless drama queen needs income. I think he’ll keep stroking college boosters to inflate a NIL offer or try to con an NFL team into a signing bonus. Since he’s nothing special in pro football (where big, athletic guys abound), I expect he’ll take that year of NIL on his ongoing journey to “find himself.”

Seems a smidge harsh to me. It’s just business to him. Don’t see much drama beyond the social media stuff, which you admit is to get a bigger bag. No, it’s not a typical wrestler’s path, but he’s not typical.

You're right. I'm a bit scratchy this morning. Don't do the social stuff, so not sure what he says there. I'm just not fond of these guys (AJ included) who play with eligibility. ORS shirts, especially, should mean more than providing a sabbatical.

No worries. Not happy about the state of amateur athletics, that’s for sure. And I want AJ to be gone from the sport ASAP.

For whatever it is worth, the word from within WWE is that Gable was not getting better, and the feeling was that he wasn't applying himself. They are apparently still very high on his brother Bobby.

Putting emotion aside, we should hope he succeeds. We're now at a place where ESPN announces when an NFL draftee wrestled in HS. More positive PR for the sport please.

Not sure why folks leave off the "F" when referring to AJF. Maybe some just don't give an "F" anymore, or they don't have any "F's" left to give. Or maybe I'm taking it too literally when I hear people say "AJ must to be F'd up." I don't know, but it bothers me. And this is not an "F'ing" joke.

At a time when real money, finally, can be earned winning Olympic and World medals, it strikes me that Gable continues to seek something else. I’m guessing HEW.

I'm not high on Gable as a football prospect. Doesn't have a natural position due to his size. Too big and slow to play linebacker (not to mention zero football instinct which is so crucial for modern linebacker), too small to play the interior and likely not enough length to play at edge.

No problem with him getting a camp invite on the off chance he's an insane outlier though. Zero risk there. If he makes the practice squad, that would be a huge accomplishment.

Guessing his visit involved a workout and height, length measurement and they felt he had a shot at DT or DE and now can see how he would play in pads.

does it? he could be cut by the end of camp and be on campus second semester.
He could play all season and when it ends around New Year's, just start wresting the next week if his contract allowed for it. After all, we are having a group fantasy here anyway. All I remember about Gable Steveson is him getting squashed like a bug twice to old What's His Name...

Oh yeah, Anthony Cassar, the original Ant Man.

“one of the most dominant college wrestlers in history”

He was great but that’s an overstatement IMO
If you are ranking all-time dominate college wrestlers, he's in the top half. So he's "one of them". 😉

Seriously, he only lost 2 matches and his wins were usually not in doubt. (There was one SV win).

On Intermat, they were picking top 5 heavies of all time. Most had Gable 1 or 2 with Snyder. I'm sorry, I don't think either sniffs Haselrig or Baumgartner or the really big boys back in the day. Gable and Snyder maybe bottom half of top 10 all time. 6-8-ish.

At this point there’s been seven 4-time champs. GS won twice. Great. But all-timer?

They were just talking heavies but still I don’t think he makes top 5
I’m talking about the ESPN article and its quote that he is “one of the most dominant college wrestlers in history”. See my post above.

guys, let’s not be obtuse. he’s absolutely one of the most dominant wrestlers of all time.

he would have finished his career with 2 losses to 1 opponent and a 3x champ with an absurdly high bonus rate for hwt if he chose to continue and he won the olympics with two years of college eligibility left. multiple bonus wins over a hodge winner and a hodge for himself too.

perfectly accurate way to portray him to a non-wrestling audience.

That is a pretty good resumé. If I remember correctly, his true freshman year, the only two times he was taken down was by Cassar.

Edit: true, not RS

But he didn’t get three titles, and he was second best during his three years in college. Not sure how a guy who lost multiple times to another guy can now be labeled as one of the most dominant wrestlers of all time at any weight. Did you start drinking early today?

He was dominated by Cassar. IMO, Ruth and AB were more dominant. Among many. I don’t get the man crush for Stevenson. He was a great wrestler, but putting him on Mount Rushmore is insane.

Accolades based on “would have’s” is a very Iowa fan thing to do

Olympic gold while in college doesn’t do anything for you? He was absolutely dominant. It’s just 1 guy had his number. Doesn’t change the fact he pretty much annihilated everyone else

Let’s be clear; the article said he was one of the most dominant “college” wrestlers of all time, in addition to being a gold medalist.

I’m disputing him being one of the most dominant “college” wrestlers of all time.

He won two titles and made two finals. He had a low fall rate. He’s not even top 50 all time in tournament points

He was fantastic. But based on his actual college results, and not his “would have” college results, there’s no way he was one of the most dominant “college” wrestlers of all time.

He was not dominated by Cassar. Both of those matches were close, and the Senior beat the true freshman. I thought Cassar was going to stall out at nationals.

David Taylor
Ed Ruth
Zain Retherford
Bo Nickal
Jason Nolf
Aaron Brooks
Carter Starocci

7 PSU guys alone in the last 14 years (alone) with more dominant college wrestling careers than Steveson.

Just how long is the list of “most dominant college wrestlers of all time”?

This is a good time of year for this kind of discussion. I'd put Gable in the pool with our guys as "most dominant". JS summarized it pretty well.
