Hall and Manville compete this Saturday

I didn't realize the Dream Classic was being held so early (so to speak). By holding it the same weekend as the PA State Championships, it precludes any PA wrestlers from participating, unless they attend a non-PIAA school (like Wyoming Seminary).

I wonder why the Dream Classic date was moved up. Last year, it was held in Iowa on April 12th. Cenzo Joseph, Michael Kemerer, Josh Shields, and Sam Krivus participated in the event. In 2014 it was held in Georgia on April 13th, and Jason Nolf, Tyler Smith, T.C. Warner, Garrett Peppelman, Zeke Moisey, and Scott Parker participated in the event. In 2013 it was held in Illinois on April 21st, and Darian Cruz, Connor Schram, Cody Wiercioch, and Matt McCutcheon participated. In 2012, Jimmy Gulibon participated. I could go on, but why belabor the point.

Mark Hall vs Alex Marinelli is compelling. What is their history in matchups?

I know they met in the Grappler Fall Classic in 2013. Hall defeated Marinelli 5-3 in the semis of that event, and then bested Fox Baldwin in the finals, 6-3.

That's the only match-up that I can recall, but there may have been others.

I guess they don't respect any of the senior state finalists in PA this year. Otherwise, it does not make sense to preclude PA wrestlers.

Bushwood is on paragraph 18 of the reasons for this occuring. Im guessing he has 3 more to go before posting. Just wait for it.

Haha and he's going to somehow blame Brands, Jrob, Heffernan, Imar, and a few others I'm sure.

Doubtful that this is the reason. Probably has more to do with the fact that Minnesota would have had to basically wait until the 2nd weekend in April to hold this if they wanted to include PA Seniors AND still get other top wrestlers (PA States, Dapper Dan, FloNationals/NHSCAs). And who knows who would have came then?

The only kids probably that would have been in consideration would be Karam, Pletcher & Kaleb Young. As it is, they have two kids wrestling for a PA High School (Wyoming Sem) and Norstrem, Brent Moore and Bullard wrestling in those spots. If I was running the event, I would probably choose the same date.

Some Iowa fans already have Marinelli beating Hall easily. Go figure.
Maybe a couple, but certainly not the ones who pay attention. Just want to see these 2 guys compete at high level. If Alex can beat Hall that's great but I'm not expecting it. And if Hall beats Alex by more points than he did previously then good for him. I just love that we get to see this match period!

Just like all fan bases some are crazey lol. Now he could win but no way be easy. If I was going to place a bet but it all on Hall. Only way could take Alex would have to be given 25-1 odds. :)

This is the match Tom mentioned. I can't get this link to work (and can't find the video when I search on Flo). Maybe you'll have better luck:

Sweet, thanks, Tom & Cholley! I found a link that works: http://old.flowrestling.org/coverag...al-Mark-Hall-Minnesota-vs-Alex-Marinelli-Ohio

Pretty interesting match between two then-HS Sophs. Marinelli was in on 2 or 3 great looking double leg attempts, but Hall looked impossible to finish on. I didn't keep up with the score, but it looked like 2 or 3 Hall TDs and none for Marinelli. But not much riding by Hall either. 6-4, or 6-3 or 4-3? Entertaining in any event. So thanks.

Love how people who say "some" when it was one guy who said he would win comfortably...and was refuted by quite a few other Iowa posters. Nobody, college or high school beats Hall easily.

I've only watched Marenelli wrestle a couple times. Very tough and impressive kid. My guess is he is as close to D1 ready as a high school kid can be. Look forward to watching them face one another next week.

The thing about Marinelli is that he is a bull that is overpowering high school guys. There is always a concern that guys like that won't maintain that level in college without the horsepower advantage, especially if they are a step slower. Can't help but think of Jake Kemerer in this context. Now I'm not saying that will be the case with Alex, just that until he gets in a college room and faces some division I opponents, there is going to be some doubt because right now I'm not seeing the same skill set of a Nolf or Snyder when they were seniors; and yes that's a high bar, but he is ranked #3 overall and Iowa may be looking for an immediate impact from him next year.

Contrast that with Hall. He is on the small side for 170 and wins with speed and technique. I love the fact he has room to bulk up. That being said, there will still be concerns just like with any freshman. Most of his big wins have been in freestyle, so his question marks may be his gas tank and mat skills in college. No reason to believe that there will be problem at this point but that's where I'm going to be paying close attention early on in his career.

I would not be surprised to see this match go either way. Marinelli does seem a lot bigger. Mark Hall is more accomplished in freestyle. Still, his folkstyle achievements are notable too. I looked up the 2014 "Who's No. 1" match when he was no. 2 and Anthony Valencia was no. 1. Apparently, the match really meant something to Hall and he fared pretty well in that one.

Marinelli is a Metcalf type...hard charger for 6 minutes. It's not so much he's big...he said he could wrestle 157 and started the season at 160...moved up for the team and with an eye to the future at 165. He is strong but an an Iowa style guy. Could end up like Nick Moore, could end up like Metcalf. Don't think so on Moore...too much discipline and desire.

25-1? I will take Alex for $10.00 :)

He is much more athletic and offensive than Moore was even in high school. I think the Metcalf comparison is fair. Hall probably has more upside because of his unreal catlike quickness. You can't teach that. I think both guys will go on to have very good if not great college careers no matter who wins this one time exhibition match. That said- I can't wait to watch.

When they met the first time at 171 it sure looked like Mark was nowhere near Marinelli's size

I also see some Megaludis in him. The kid is as flexible as a Gumby doll!

I think that is one of the big tells on whether a recruit will adjust to the next level. If he is going hard the whole match, especially in the last minute when he's already winning against a quality opponent, that's a real good sign. Nolf was balls to the wall for 6 minutes his senior year and that was one of the reasons I was confident he would do well in college.

The other things I look at is if the guy has a big horse power advantage, does he rely on it for the majority of his offense and if the guy has problems on bottom or not.

182# Match Nick Reenan #2 at 195# (Northwestern) defeats Taylor Venz unranked (Nebraska) 13-10
195# Match Ben Darmstadt #4 at 195# (Cornell) over Keegan Moore #3 at 182# (Oklahoma State) by a first period fall

I have no worries about Keegan Moore going to OSU. Early bloomer.

McKee looks very good. Gotta wonder if he can make 133 though

Manville wins in OT. He will have a few years in the room to work on his offense

Marinelli in deep but just stoned. Halls hips very strong.

Missed on a few HiC s for mark but go to the low ankle w 3 sec left to go ahead 2-0 after 1

Marks rides for 1:08. Marinelli gets E then gets in deep . Hall stoned him 2-1

Holy sh!t...as I'm typing hall puts Marinelli on his back in the 3rd.
