Playing for a garbage team...
Sometime the transfer works out for the player... Watching Shorter play better while part of a team where his efforts don't matter is quite ironic.

In this age of instant gratification and the great resignation, most people are learning the grass is not always greener.

???

Shorter has as many receptions in 4 games this year as a 5th year player as he did in 2019 when we were trying to force opportunities for him before he was ready (he was TE size then and had a major case of the dropsies). I mean he has steadily improved each year and I'm happy for him but don’t most players? He only has 4 more receptions than Lambert-Smith this year, so it's hard to understand why you are missing him at all.

Doesn't break my heart. He ate his way and Daddy talked his way out of State College.
He's a slightly above average college player.

This only underscores how disappointing things are with Lambert-Smith so far.

Why should we give a crap about Shorter. It's not like he wasn't given plenty of opportunity to succeed here. He failed and that's that. Next man up.
Let’s be fair here, he did not “fail” because he is still playing D1 football at a respectable football school. He struggled at Penn State and he may be struggling at Florida too, but he did not fail. We don’t know the inner workings of exactly what happened at Penn State, but we do know that Shorter/his Father felt he was not being developed and used appropriately at Penn State, and we know that Shorter told Julian Fleming to go elsewhere based on his own experiences at Penn State.

Shooter needed to play for Stubs. HE got dealt a raw hand when they had to move Corley to WR Coach to make room for Mr. Overrated.

If you watched the UM game a few years back, Shorter was beating his man off the LOS numerous times, yet Clifford never threw one pass to his direction. Clifford always targeted KJ which I don't blame him too much for, but when KJ was double covered and Shorter was wide open, Clifford threw to KJ for an incompletion. Clifford did the same with Dotson when other WR's were wide open, yet he never looked their way.

I believe the UM game was the nail in the coffin for Shorter. Not sticking up for him, but this could have been the reason for the transfer. If anyone knows the amount of drops Shorter had, please fill me in. I recall the one where he did not go up and out muscle the defender, but others escape my mind. Remember, he was young and still in the learning process.

He gets blamed a ton for the way the Minny game started a few years back because he didn't come back and fight for the ball more I guess. Before he came to Penn State I thought he was going to be the deep go to guy and yet all I can remember is him catching 5 yard outs. Ended up being a square peg in a round hole I guess.

Franklin said it best, Shorter's problem is he was a few cheeseburgers shy of being a TE at Penn State. Sorry, but I simply can't understand how anyone wouldn't think this kid, who if I recall correctly was allegedly the top WR in the country, isn't a disappointment and primarily of his own doing.

Agreed--it's weird though that someone is bashing him though. Not weird....childish

His problem at Penn State was he didn't hustle and couldn't catch.

Caught part of the Ohio State game last week. After Fleming caught a pass for some nice additional yardage but nothing spectacular, Kirk H. made it sound like his coming out party. I try not to be too hard or easy on these kids, but what they need to realize, like all adults is there will be continuous competition and sometimes lack of fairness in the adult world, which includes major college football. As far as Hamler and Clifford, Clifford does tend to lock onto receivers, but in Hamler's (vs Shorter) case, he could break any pass he caught and change the game. Just catching a pass for no additional gain just doesn't cut it in major college football...I'm curious what the father/son combos of 5 stars who don't make it tell themselves what the problem was-how often it was poor coaching or fit of school....or poor parenting.

Or kids being vastly overrated by the scouting services.

I believe Shorter was a camp darling. Great measurables, good 40 for his size, looked good in a t-shirt and mesh shorts.

He came from a running offense in HS though best I remember. He had 112 receptions for 1800 yards give or take over 3 years and 27 total TDs.

As a comparison, Chris Olave had 93 receptions, 1760 yards...in his senior year of HS. Olave had 26 TDs as a senior.

The Star system has so many deficiencies that it is close to meaningless. HS coaches, unpaid player agents, and on-line unpaid football analysts (most of whom know less about football than you and I) all conspire to boost star ratings. Throw in the for profit football camps and you have an evaluation system that fails to account for “grit”, the ability to adjust to the game in real time, and in attention to maturity. JS was a five star and by the end of his first summer at PSU, it was obvious that he was going to struggle with the college game. The guy won’t even play in the CFL.

Olave was a 3 star 5.7 and rated the #74 WR in the country. Shorter was a 5 star 6.1 and rated the #3 WR in the country. Who would you pick for your team. Give OSU credit, they found a true gem with Olave. Not the first time, the WR on the Rams from Eastern Washington is considered the best WR in the NFL.

I was illustrating the defect of rating kids so highly on the camp circuit when their HS production doesn't match it. The idea is that the difference in a 5* and a 4* is one kid is college ready while dominating HS kids and the other may take a year to get ready.

The NFL is full of unheralded players developing into the best. Not what I meant. I'm saying that if your HS stats are not great, you probably shouldn't be a 5*. If Shorter were a 4*, his name would come up as often Saaed Blacknall.

I would take Blacknall over Shorter any day. Blacknall made some great catches for us during vital game times, and I don't think I ever saw him drop one pass. That slant catch against Iowa between two defenders on 4th down was a thing of beauty.

The one on ones in the camps are often comical.

Shorter put his name in the transfer portal and was obviously not offered by OSU, Bama, GA, Clemson, USC, etc. Maybe that is an indication that he was overrated coming out of hs.

It's not like he went to UTEP or Colorado State. He leads Florida in receptions...

Florida wasn't much when he transferred. The big name teams didn't want him.

Florida is Florida--stop pretending he went to a MAC school. You're being ridiculous
Being one of the top WR in his class and not getting any offers from other top programs when he transferred is reality, not ridiculous. Learn the game!

Why are you pretending Florida is a MAC school. Yes, it's telling he didn't get pursued by Bama but he was overrated. That doesn't mean Florida isn't a good landing spot. Florida isn't far off from Penn State talent wise.
