In their White Out call did anyone notice how amped up FOR PSU Fowler was? He really wanted PSU to make a big play and was stoked when we hit the pass to Dotson I think to set up the first TD.
On the other hand Herbie was a big time wet blanket about the Friermuth ticky tack nudge on his TD and the non PI call on PSU on scUM's 4th down.

I did'nt see a major push off from PF, that would have been really ticky tack, but Reid was WAY early and absolutely deserved to be flagged. No big deal, as I thought Michigan owned the whistles in the 2nd half right from the opening kickoff.

They got a call from o'neill at halftime.

Fowler has as much as admitted outright he is a big fan - within the limits of his job.

He talked during a PSU podcast a month or so ago about his first college game being at Penn State and how it ignited his love for the game. He lived in State College as a kid for a few years.

I know Herbie is sometimes a target for criticism but I don’t think Penn State could ask for more complimentary broadcasters than this team - from Gameday’s arrival the whole way through the start of the game felt like one big Penn State promo.

Thought both did an excellent job,

Herbie did seem a bit hopeful that Michigan would do something. Maybe just because Fowler was so positive toward PSU's play in the 1st half.

I feel like Herbie always has an agenda. He is trying to build up to right teams to make his argument. Right now his argument is tOSU is the most complete team. That means Nebraska has to be way better than they are. Wisconsin lost in a fluky way to Illinois. So now he needs PSU to be undefeated when they play tOSU so PSU will be getting the big talk up until then.

I am not saying tOSU bias just whoever he anoints in any given year.

It just always feels calculated to me.

Several of the ABC crew including Chris and Kirk thanked Penn State for the weekend and stated we have the best stadium operations in the country. I guess Sandy and team can do some things right. Barry, Art, I guess they are just stupid or lying huh?

If you haven't seen them, I highly suggest checking out Fowler and Herbie's "nightcap recap" on Fowler's Instagram. They've been recording some 10-15 min. unscripted chatting after the games that they call, typically in the car on the way to the airport. It's great to hear them "off the record" and in a more casual environment. And both are generally very complementary of PSU so it's a great listen.

"Calculated" excellent choice. I wouldn't have thought of it but knew exactly what you meant when I read it.

Both are very good I just got a kick out of Fowler being a bit of a cheerleader. We do not get that much, a little from Blackledge but in a very guarded and subtle way. Foeler was much more demonstrative. I did know Fowler had PSU ties with his father and living in State College as a kid so that has something to do with it.

The White Out gets tremendous positive PR and reflects quite favorably on the university nationally. Great to see that. The marketing guru, Guido? If this was all his brainchild then he hit it out of the park as one of the best marketing ideas.

Just about every fan thinks that one/both of the broadcasters are biased against their team. I guarantee that there are UM fans that though Herbie was biased toward PSU and always hates on UM.

These guys get paid big bucks to be neutral observers and I'm sure they are very conscious about saying positive and negative things about both teams.

I’m sure they both stay within a 40% - 60% / 60% - 40% “favorite” range during most games. It’s hard for any play-by-play or color sidekick to be absolutely neutral, both will usually fluctuate to one team and then the other, back-and-forth many times over the course of any 3 1/2 hours.

Fowler and Herby certainly do it better than most!

Yeah, I'm sure those two did a thorough analysis of PSU's "stadium operations" and that they've vastly improved during Andy's regime. But that's why she gets paid the big bucks. Let us know when she accomplishes something of substance.

Don't bring logic and truth to this board. It is NOT what most do here and is NOT welcome.

I ran into the big 10 tailgate crew at Applebees in Minneapolis a few weeks ago and Dinardo said the same thing

Fowler would be the perfect one to help reshape the narrative.

I do think some people are missing what happened here. Both Fowler and Herbstreit were throwing a little shade at Barbour and her minions. They credited Guido by name twice with the whiteout and what its meant to the Penn State football experience. The Guido that was essentially fired in 2012 as the current regime was assuming control. The Guido that was a huge Paterno guy.

Don’t forget this piece before the sPit game. BTW he wasn’t the only one to pass tickets thru the fence :)

Still waiting for a game where Herbie fails to deploy the term “physicality” .... f#cking hate that term.... he’s good for that at least 2x a broadcast...

First game I see where he does not utter that term - I promise to shove my car keys up my ass*

Fowler was still amped up from the day before at the American Ale House. Table for 5.

God, I hope Herbie is reading this somehow, then when he refrains you have to film it and post it here. :)

Kirk Herbstreit is a good guy. He has actually received a lot of criticism over the years from the Deadspin types for speaking highly of Joe Paterno. The word is that Herbie knows the common narrative about Joe is complete BS. I wish he would be more willing to speak up, but we must remember who he works for.

they get a lot like most broadcasters....they have some notes that they want to reference and they shoehorn that stuff in (did you know this linebacker collects 70's rock band tshirts? who gives a shit?) and that extends to the actual football stuff (remember the guy a couple weeks ago that talked about the tight end down the seam the entire game? he made it sound like it was the biggest deal in the world and neither team tried it....I think it was the Purdue game)

and when a game is 21 to 0 early they start to root for the trailing team to make a comeback because they want the game to be exciting.....its no fun broadcasting a butt kicking....its way more fun to have a close game, especially with a comeback

You just have to accept Herbie is a talking cliche. You could take the soundtrack of his broadcast and use it on any one of a dozen games.

I’ve trained myself to tune him out, all he does is talk about the obvious and provides little if any insight.

Herbsreit gets WAY too much criticism on this board. The dude LOVES the PSU atmosphere and fans. He has been raving about the White Out and our student section for over a decade now. Herbstreit has always seemed like one of the most honest, unbiased, and genuine CFB talking heads to me and I can't stand most of the on air personalities at ESPN.

Herby is not unbiased when it comes to OSU and their argument to be included into the playoff every year. He is a cheerleader. I do miss his talks with Paterno when Joe would tell him things like the reason he couldn't read all that well was because he went to OSU and not Penn State.

I think he is good at pretending he isn't biased. Not as good as Blackledge or Millen. Actually, Millen acts like he hates PSU so never mind about him. Blackledge is very good.

I would love to see a PSU OSU game called by Blackledge and Herbstreit. It would be interesting.

I completely understand people’s distaste for Herbie but he is one of the very very few people that have been saying this is a team to watch out for since week 1.

I was at the game and as we all know, it really has become an event. I dare say it is truly fabulous TV, the visual is unbelievable. I watched the 4th quarter replay last night and I was just struck by how loud the crowd/students can be. ABC/ESPN love the white out, because I bet the ratings are huge.

At the end, when they were killing time with the interviews on the field, etc., Herbie raved about the atmosphere, the student section, the amount of marketing effort that leads to a great game environment. He tries to be impartial during the game, which means he says things that aren't too popular related to the good guys. But he is a fan of the white out.

Fowler seems to be a bit of a fan. Blackledge is usually pretty balanced also, but I thought he wasn't too impartial for the Pitt game. He said some things that were pretty biased (but of course I didn't mind).

Thanks for the pointer to this. That was fun to listen to.

Kirk Herbstreit is a good guy.
After Gameday on Saturday, everyone else on the set spent a few minutes with the VIPs and then got the heck out of there. Herbstreit spent another 10 minutes taking pictures, signing autographs, and talking about the game with fans. I was impressed.
