Terrific pick up for now. Good power and RBI guy that is desperately needed In the middle of lineup right now and until the end of the year. When JayHa and Mercer get back they can play around a bit with the lineup and Ramirez will likely see some 1B action then. Short term need for sure, but they also didn't give up much either. Thumbs up !!!!

I love the move. Is he a very good defensive 3B? Nope. But he adds some pop to the lineup, which desperately needs it. Aramis started slow at the plate this year, but he's hitting .352/.500/.922 in July. And that's not something new, over the past 3 years, Aramis has hit .277/.455/.801 before the all-star break, and .307/.514/.873 after. So based on history, the Bucs should be getting the better half of his season.

And the Pirates gave up nothing for him (a guy way outside the top 20 prospects in the system).

Gives the Bucs a stop-gap at 3rd until Harrison is back, and then once he returns, Hurdle will have the option to platoon Harrisom around to give guys breaks. It also means once guys are healthy, there'll always be a solid pinch hitter on the bench, another area of need they had.

Just couldn't ask for a better deal that takes nothing away and adds a lot.

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday the Bucco's were in the midst of a 5 losses in 6 games stretch coming out of the break, with the pitching looking shaky and the bats dormant. Today, they a putting a whoopin on Washington, and have gotten some help for the infield without giving up their prized prospects.

This is getting me ready to "raise it".....

Before I opened the thread I thought for sure it was Barmes.

I sure hope Knocker & 'fair' approve of this.

Then again, we got rid of him because:

He could NOT play defense either!

LOL!!!

And, going forward at the time, we couldn't afford to keep him.

wbcincy, what say you sir??

I am very happy about this. He has really been hitting well lately. He is not very good defensively anymore, but in fairness to him he became a very good 3rd baseman after he left the Pirates.

I remember trading Ramirez and Lofton for basically used baseballs and thinking so now we're looking for a young power hitting third baseman like the guy we just traded. Ramirez & Lofton for Hernandez, Hill & Brubeck. McClatchy ought to refund money to Pirate fans for that trade.

I never saw anyone cover more ground than Lofton in centerfield (as a Cleveland Indian) and that included Moreno and Van Slyke. I recall being at the Jake and seeing a ball hit thinking that's in the gap and extra bases and somehow there was Lofton waiting for it.

When Harrison gets back I now envision him getting most of the starts in right field, especially against lefties. I have certainly not given up on Polanco. He is swinging the bat better lately and he will still get his opportunities, but he is not ready to be an everyday player in a pennant race.

Mr. "Operation Shutdown"...

"Nobody told me I was in competition. If there is competition, somebody better let me know. If there is competition, they better eliminate me out of the race and go ahead and do what they're going to do with me. I ain't never hit in spring training and I never will. If it ain't settled with me out there, then they can trade me. I ain't going out there to hurt myself in spring training battling for a job. If it is [a competition], then I'm going into 'Operation Shutdown.' Tell them exactly what I said. I haven't competed for a job since 1991."

Actually....the Buccos dumped Ramirez - but not due to poor defense.

The Buccos did dump him due to his salary......which was about to leap to an ASTRONOMICAL $6 Million for 2004 (LOL, I know, how times have changed in just 10 years. $6 million is now a mediocre salary for a set up guy, back then it was 25% of the Bucco payroll - probably.)

ARamirez's defense was actually at least "OK" (league average) until the last 4 or 5 years....largely due to having better range than just about any other 3B, which compensated for a higher number of errors. The defensive profile has bottomed out as age has taken its toll, and the range has diminished.

He was adequate; never very good at all. He still threw the ball in the stands for other teams; just like he did when he was a Pirate.

I could be wrong but

They didn't miss his defense when he left; that's for sure sir.
