How would you improve Penn State's WHITEOUT atmosphere?

Georgia's red lights were a nice twist to their "red out." Imagine Beaver Stadium completely covered in black lights, like the locker room. Wonder how that would look on TV.

Also, I emailed Guido like 10 years ago to say the brightness of the WHITEOUT seemed to have gone from a 10 to a 9. He said it was possible as they changed the floodlamps to a more energy efficient bulb.

I think PSU should come up with a new parking plan that puts 15,000 cars on Atherton street .... wait ...

They seemed to do a better job with the piped in music and loudness of it for the Pitt game.
Yeah, now that I think about it it was a bit better. The atmosphere at the Pitt game was off from the start though... that whole weather delay was a bit shady if you ask me. Part of me feels like it was a drill, it certainly rained, but I didn't hear any thunder or see lightning.

Plus the closing of the gates, didn't make any sense either.... They told people to go back to their cars if they had yet to be admitted into the stadium, however there were thousands of people already waiting in line and tens of thousands marching up to the stadium. The only people that could hear the gates were closed, were the people already inside. Not to mention, "going back to your cars" is quite a hike for a lot of people so everyone just stood outside the gates in the rain, many of them huddled under trees... the worst possible place you can go in a lighting storm. Maybe the Beav doesn't have the space to fit the capacity on the concourses? Regardless, the entire thing felt odd, made no sense.

The concourses were full closing the gates was smart.

My view is from a different perspective, wondering if packing the crowd on the upper concourse and ramps would exceed the code live loading. Probably would hear some steel creaking and possibly a little bounce or vibration from the floor framing deflecting.

This is senerio we experienced on the end of the cantilevered seating, Rows AA & BB, in the south upper decks during the OHIO ST game ...2008? The steel creaking in the stadium could be heard in downtown State College. The days following the game, structural engineers from Michael Baker were brought in to inspect the stadium.

Impact Load: Grandstands, stadiums, and similar
assembly structures may be subjected to loads caused by
crowds swaying in unison, jumping to its feet, or
stomping. Designers are cautioned that the possibility of
such loads should be considered.
-impact dead load on inclined auditorium = 60 psf
-impact live load on inclined auditorium = 90 psf

Turn out the lights and use a glow in the dark football. It would be like a round if night golf.

I'm generally a glass half full guy, but until we win a very high percentage of these, I don't like white outs. You want to create dread in the opponent, something like this

During the game, hand out white and blue flashlights. Create a light show of the logo around the stadium. Maybe logo bounces section by section repeats instead of one single logo.
I've seen some amazing light and smoke shows at the beginning of NBA games.
Something like those with a laser light show put to music (ie Roger Waters wall show) the show would be something like 5-8 minutes of PSU football history, bring back some alumni to participate. Have the blue Band on the field at same time playing along with music ie Fleetwood Mac doing Tusk with USC Band.
Fireworks show after game as Blue Band plays concert.

How much $ would PSU want to spend.

You don't need flashlights, which would be an expense. There are apps where you can just make the screen of a phone a certain solid color. That would essentially accomplish the same thing for free.

Honestly there is very little cost involved in revitalizing something like this. When it started back in '04 nobody cared. But then everyone loved it in '05 because we had a big upset.

For 15 years it has been tied to the kernkraft zombie nation song. So that's gotten pretty old. They could just jettison that song and replace it with something else. Or multiple songs. Like the Rocky theme song being one of them. Something everyone likes.

I like the idea of wearing the white uniforms.

A couple thought for the “Too much loud music” crowd.

The piped in music is what helps get the crowd, especially the students jacked up and loud. It is a major part of what has transformed the stadium atmosphere to what it is today. Beaver stadium used to be a morgue for most games back in the 80’s and 90’s. Yes I was there. The Blue band plays a part of that atmosphere but please spare me the “ most people would rather hear the band” nonsense. If your kid is in the band or you were, that’s awesome but that is NOT what the other 102,000 people are there to see. Is the music too loud if you are up in upper south end zone where my seat used to be. Yes. Maybe more speakers spread to different areas and turn the volume down a little.

Including the amplified blue band sound.

Allow there to be a few moments when there's no sound at all. Allow the students to think up some chants on their own, without the guide on the PA system. Allow the crowd to "breath" on it's own... stop trying to sell us nonstop with commercials, or get us jacked up constantly with constant blasting on the crappy PA system, causing half the stadium to hold their ears, and the other half not being able to hear anything.

Nothing against Dean, but I also think it might be time to transition the stadium play by play announcer as well.... He's gotten a bit too mayberry for my taste, I feel like his tone used to come off as more stern, and too the point. Now the guys sounds like a narrator for Disney.

Yea ok on the last one. Good luck with that. Not saying you are wrong cuz you are right. But lol good luck. Haha

Better chance of the statue being put up and Jay being hired as AD

Enhance the White Out by letting the students pick the game or games they wish to be a white out. When a Marketing Hack picks the game, I lose a lot of enthusiasm. Same goes for a Strip Out.

It does not have to be an evening (football) game to be effective way to support a PSU athletic event; it has to be genuine student (fan) support.

Nailed it. Can i buy you a beer?

The white out has sucked since it became non organic. So since the illinois game in what 2008? So to me its old boring tired and worn out. With the exception of maybe a handful of games.

Oh and btw everything this team and program has done is non organic. its a calculated

True. Actually it is irrelevant. What is relevant is that it now coincides with big games.

How would I improve PSU’s WHITEOUT atmosphere?

I’d drive 600 miles from Chicagoland and yell with 100,000+ of my friends until my voice was horse!

(Then Sun morning be the first in line at The Creamery to load 20 half-gallons of ice cream to accompany me on my victorious drive back home.)

At halftime, bring out Sara Ganim, Sally Jenkins, Christine Brennan, David Jones, Colin Cowturd, Dan Patrick, Dan Wetzel, Jim Boheim, Dave Wanstadt, Dez-douche Howard, Keith Olberman, etc. They stand in unison on the field, ranging from 40-to-40, are blind-folded, and are instructed to swipe at pinatas swinging overhead. The pinatas are designed in effigy of our favorite BOT members. The White-Out, within minutes, quickly turns into a Brown-Out once it's discovered that as each lazy, uniformed, egotistical, agenda-driven, vendetta-spiked, narrative-following piece of crap lives up to their name. That's because the pinatas are NOT full of candy, they're full of shit... just like ALL OF THEM. The game eventually gets postponed because there is so much fertilizer on the field it is impossible to start the second half....but a week later, the grass is as green and full as it's ever been! And thus, you have the best gift the BOT has ever given PSU...leaving their shit on the field as the rest of look forward to greener pastures...while never having to deal with their shit ever again! (NOTE: did not intend this post to be this way, but that's how it ended up...:)

Line up the refs in a dunking booth with bids to throw the balls at the target. Make target 10' diameter and throwing distance five'. Place sharks in dunk tank, include replay booth officials in contest. Line the entry for refs with real nittany lions, snarling and bearing claws, roaring. Save this set up for coaches post game retreat if necessary.

Maybe they should give that "Make Some Noooiiiizzzz" guy more opportunities to scream in my ear.

If that doesn't work, hire some outside consultants. Worked great for the parking and access issues.

Are you familiar with the old line about “if it ain’t broke...”?

The white out has been identified as one of the best traditions in college football. Let’s work on our third down efficiency or game day traffic and parking.
I've only been to one game at Beaver Stadium, but it was a white out game vs. Michigan in 2017. I have never seen anything like it. Just incredible.

Black lights might be interesting with all of that white but, IMHO, there is not much you can do to improve on what I saw.

Or we could crank it up another level, like the Diner en Blanc crowd. All white EVERYTHING.
