If a PSU fan is disappointed with this week, imagine being a Texas fan

As I suspect all are aware, Texas lost to Maryland 34-29 this weekend.

Being a 1970 grad, I still have a burning disgust for the outcome of the 1969 season and our assignment to second place in the old mythical NC system.

Very similar to 1994 for the younger fans.

I was on the Texas board today and the anger/resignation/frustration is high. They are even starting to mention names as Herman's replacement one game into his second season. This is after their rejoice that he picked them as opposed to LSU after the 2016 season at Houston. Herman is a MENSA and apparently as arrogant as hell and is already on the wrong side of the media. Throw in a 7-7 record to date, a poor offense, questionable substitution patterns, playing too many second/third/fourth teamers at crunch time and loyalty to Tim Beck, the OC, and you have a pissed off fan base. LOLOLOL

I did not realize this, but Texas is only 4 games over .500 in this decade and is 23-30 since 2013. I knew they were floundering, but not to this degree. Disclaimer: I got these records from a Texas site and did not fact check it, but assume they are correct.

Anyhow, glad to be a Penn State fan.

We are.

Texas ruled the roost in the state and their conference for a long time. It seems like the tide turned against TXwhen TAMU joined the SEC.

The SEC is a stronger conference, with good payouts per school. That strengthened TAMU’s hand in recruiting and they got an increased share of good recruits. It appears that TX hasn’t yet found a way to recover their edge.

You realize how close State was to losing Saturday? Just imagine what this board would be like had they lost. Yikes. Texas has been in a tailspin which they can't seem to pull out of so their fans are conditioned to adversity, In comparison, on our end we have been euphoric considering where we were 5 years ago. But, the team pulled it out so no worries - right?

I will wait until after the season to judge Herman .... But have to admit I expected a large step up this year with recruiting and everyone in the system for another year. Was really underwhlemed at Texas performance Saturday. Losing to MD is not a good sign for him. Offense seemed meh... People think PSU fans are impatient ... TX fans demand titles immediately

UTex only has itself to blame. A&M, Nebraska and Colorado would all likely still be in the Big XII if UT had a more collegial attitude toward being in a conference. It was a "two for me, one for you" feeling toward other conference schools. That was their choice and they have do deal with it.

EDIT: Thanks 84Lion for your post below. Missouri totally slipped by mind.

The Longhorns seem to have highly ranked recruiting classes. Maybe some of those prospects are over-rated? I see stories about TX high schools holding back kids in school to essentially redshirt for HS football, and that these touted prospects tend to peak early.

If this keeps up, herrman will be stripped of his coaching responsibilities at texas.

Can I put Herman on the "hot seat"? LOL

An argument could be made that the Big 8 "bailed out" the remaining SWC "big schools" (all in Texas) when the Big 12 was formed. The SWC was dying, by scandals (Wikipedia states that the only SWC schools to avoid probation in the 1980s were Arkansas, Baylor, and Rice) and decline in TV revenue. Of course, this was no "merger of equals," rather, the Texas schools (and Texas especially) believed they could rule the conference. Not only A&M, but Mizzou later left for the SEC, and then Nebraska and Colorado (Nebraska was especially upset at Texas, for perceived preferential treatment by the zebras and their attitude that "all your TV rights are belong to us" - not to mention the breakup of the yearly game with Oklahoma) for the B1G and Pac-12 respectively.
UTexas to me is the epitome of the typical Texas "all hat no cattle."

In hindsight the Big 8 officials from that time likely wish they'd have played hardball with the four SWC schools and demanded equality across the board. I believe you're right. The Big 8 came to their rescue - not vice versa. Four SWC schools came aboard and ironically four schools eventually departed. Good job Longhorns.

But back to the OP - good win by the Terps.

I don't know this for a fact, but I've long had the impression that a lot of top coaches may not want the Texas job because they have a lot of rich know it all boosters.

You would think they have a pile of Nattys, and 4 is good, but hardly top of the heap

That and many of the kids from the power programs - in Central Texas, Westlake, Lake Travis, Cedar Park, use the same system and run the same plays from middle school through high school upon dictates from the local high school football coach/demigod. By the age of 18 (19 in many cases for kids held back), these kids are tapped out talent wise.

The "peaked early" theory is garbage. Take a look around college football and you'll find a significant group of TX kids on the rosters of top programs. Alabama, Ohio State, Auburn, Oklahoma, Florida State, etc. Make a top-20 list of college football players the past five seasons and at least 25% will be TX kids. The biggest issue now for TX teams is that most will leave the state for college. The 2017 recruiting class had the the entire top-10 in the state leave TX. This includes three of the top-10 players in the country. Episcopal High in Houston has had three HS All-Americans in the past two years and all three have left the state. TAMU looks to be making the greatest strides in turning the tide with Jimbo at the helm.

No one is disputing that Texas still pumps out a ton of talent. But Mack Brown, when he got lazy, just started recruiting straight from the top 50 list. A lot of those kids have, indeed, peaked early, and get passed up. He was a California kid, but it’s the Jimmy Clausen effect. He was an almost 20 year old senior tearing up 16 and 17 year olds.

But, yeah, Texas is an export state - has to be because of the insane number of D1 kids produced

I certainly agree. A good friend and longtime TX high school coach used this analogy to describe Mack's post 2005 recruiting strategy. "While others were pounding pavement and watching HS games, Mack rowed his boat out in the lake and said "I'll take the first 25 to jump in". This strategy backfired as most of the early commits never fully panned out.

I've been in TX six years now and I can say there's nothing like TX HS football. What's different now is that the population boom has made the sport twice as strong but a large portion of the players are not TX kids and have strong ties to the areas they came from.
