and awards the "College Football Championship Belt" to the winner (Rutgers won it, in that case), with the belt changing hands every time the Champion loses a football game ........

We get to the present day. And the current Belt holder is, improbably enough, the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.

Which means, of course, WE can win it on Saturday night.

Would be our first time with the Belt since 1-January-1988. We won it from Notre Dame in the 1987 regular season finale, but defended the Belt 0 times, losing to Clemson in the Citrus Bowl. We've also lost 3 other games since with a chance to win the Belt (2001 Miami, 2006 Ohio State, 2010 Alabama).

Kind of a meaningless thing, but a trivial and somewhat fun fact.

(FWIW: Rutgers lost the Belt 10 days after its creation, and has never had it again.)

If true that one of the more interesting things I’ve heard of. Thanks for sharing.

Step was at the Rutgers/Princeton game.:D So was F. Scott Fitzgerald.

This is cool if you think about it. If at some point there is a huge upset the belt could disappear from D1 for a long time. Like if Pitt had lost to Albany last week, it may not have returned to D1 for decades.

Well, Fitzgerald’s novel, The Beautiful and the Damned, was based on the Princeton/Rutgers game. So there.:p
Fitzgerald wrote a short called "Berniece bobs her hair". I remember having to read it for some class at Penn State. It didn't seem like much to me, but we spent an entire week discussing it. Made me appreciate the intracacies of literature.

Now, back to the original thread.
