Don't think I'd say that. While PSU is respected greatly by Ferentz and he grew up in Pennsylvania as a Nittany Lion/Paterno fan, the rivalries against Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa State are the biggest ones here--mostly based on geography.

And for the record, Ferentz has a pretty impressive record through the years versus Penn State and also against Michigan. In fact, Iowa has beaten Michigan 5 of the last 6 meetings.

I would cheer on Isis if they beat Michigan.

There are several Hawkeyes fans posting here, so I want to take this opportunity to congratulate them, and their school, on starting a wonderful new tradition. Anyone who has ever lost a loved one to cancer will be particularly moved by it. Keep it up.

Yes I agree. Very nice new tradition. Hope our traveling fans join in.

They're heerrre. Like the swallows and Capistrano.

Look. Iowa can certainly win but should they this year? No. I was responding to a long-time's poster who asked us to start talking smack. (I think he was being facetious btw). We are excited but the Lions should win handily. Will they? That's why they play the games. Good luck on Saturday. (also, we know all about Ferentz and the Paternos).

Yeah I like and respect a lot of things about the Iowa program, but their abililty to beat Michigan is one of my favorites. Three star recruits going against 5 star recruits and Iowa wins 5 of 6 -- that pretty much sums up the power of coaching.

Good luck to the Nittany Lions this Saturday. I'm hoping for a good game. If we can somehow contain Barkley and generate some pressure on McSorley we might have a punchers chance. I'm also hoping that any Lions fans that may make the trip to Iowa City enjoy their time there. I for one have a family wedding this Saturday:eek:

Good luck to you. I think of this as the beginning of the real football season.
You get a crowd like Kinnick going, it just makes such a great atmosphere for both teams. And quieting a crowd like that, if PSU can do it, is also really satisfying.

Penn State has shown some vulnerability along the LOS. OL hasn't been able to run block much (though teams are bunching defenders to stop Barkley). DL hasn't been able to stop the run against the last two teams, but they have played tough in the red zone and secondary's done really well.

Iowa has more than a punchers chance if they can control the ball and not just sustain drives but finish them (Pitt couldn't). Best way to defend PSU offense is keep them off the field for 35-40 minutes of the game.

On the other hand, if Moorhead can come up with another good game plan to use PSU's speed, they score points fast. Barkley is even faster than last year, runs a low 4.3 now, and there are three 4.3 wideouts in the rotation. Plus a good slot receiver and Gesicki. And all except for 1 are pretty experienced, seasoned players who will know what they're up against at Iowa City.

Kirk Ferentz owned JoePa--winning like 9 of 11 games.

O'Brien and now Franklin, Ferentz has faced once each and each time it was a blow out Penn State's way.

These are different seasons, different teams, etc. With that said, however, I don't think my Hawkeyes can beat Penn State Saturday night in Kinnick. I say that more out of the strong team I think PSU has than a weak team I think Iowa has (they don't have a weak team).

As a Hawk fan, my biggest hope is last November when we played Michigan on a Saturday night at home--the week after PSU made Iowa look ugly in Happy Valley. I gave us no chance of beating Michigan and low and behold, despite being a 3 TD underdog, we did beat he Wolverines.

Iowa fan here.

PSU is the better team but Iowa should be able to make it a game. Very rarely do KFs teams get blown out and one of those was last year in Happy Valley.

Penn State fan here.

Prepared to be beaten.

Record temps predicted for Saturday. Upper 80's by gametime. Really hoping we can control the clock and wear down Iowa D.

Accu Weather says the high will be 90, game time will be around 85, but temps will drop by halftime to around mid 70's.

Nice post, I have noticed some similarities in what you said may be areas to improve with PSU and what many would say lowa has to improve. I would say that it seems Iowa's OL has gelled a little bit better than last year at least in regard to pass blocking. It didn't seem like Beathard had much time to throw it last year whereas Stanley seems to have more time, my opinion of course other hawk fans may disagree. Could also be a product of who we have played so far.

Our Dline has not seemed to be able to generate much of a pass rush so far which is somewhat alarming. True freshman AJ Epenesa has done probably the best job of it when he actually gets to play. Their play will be key if we want to have a chance to beat ya'll, and our linebackers of course.

FYI PSU fans, Epenesa was Iowa's prize recruit, the No. 1 DE in the country according to some services.

But Iowa graduated DT Jaleel Johnson who was their best DL last year. Johnson just dominated vs. Michigan and was a big part of their victory last year.

Iowa's defense hasn't looked like they will be able to stop Penn St. Iowa's passing offense is much improved this year though. 10 passing TDs to 1 interception. Most years if Iowa falls behind by two scores they're done b/c they rely on the run too much. With the passing attack this year, they don't need to panic if they fall behind early. If Penn St limits their turnovers, they should win.

Entire defense played well against Michigan. Johnson was a unique talent and he stuck with the Vikings. DL is finding sea legs this year. They will need to play well for Iowa to have a shot.

I didn't see the game but I read that Johnson was basically unblockable in that game. Which is something because that Michigan line was entirely future NFL players.

Epenesa is going to to be a beast. Hope it starts after this weekend though.

I wouldn't say that's entirely accurate. On the safety, no one blocked Johnson (bad idea). Neither team did much on offense, Iowa had 230 yards and Michigan 201. Speights had some opportunities to make plays down the field, but was not good in that game. Iowa had 8 TFL, which was a very good result when Michigan had only 61 plays. Great team and individual effort. Iowa definitely doesn't have a player like Johnson on this year's line. The rest of the guys are back. I'd say they are still finding their way at this point.
