Iowa - Minny game thread

Iowa sacked the Minnesota QB 6 times today, mostly with just 4 rushing. Didn't Franklin say you can't get sacks against Minnesota's RPO offense?

Seemed like sloppy game management by Minny today. Things are different on the big stage when you’re supposed to perform.

I can’t help but laugh though. Could you imagine the absolute meltdown on this board if Franklin ran out on the field receiving a foul and negating a goal to go first down????? Lolololololololololol. Fleck looked like dementia patient as the refs had to escort him off the field. “How’d you find your way out here, lil fella? We need to get you back to your home.”

One of the announcers said that Minnesota's dream was done. Then one of the post game commentators said that this loss knocked Minnesota out of the playoffs because of their schedule.

These guys make enough money on their easy gigs that they should do their homework. Why wouldn't Minnesota make the playoffs with an 11-1 record and wins over Penn state, Wisconsin, and Ohio State? I don't think it will happen but IMO those were both very uneducated comments.

He did not negate anything. It was a dead ball penalty AFTER 4th down. The TO on downs would NOT have been negated.

That’s the type of blitz it seems we never do. A delayed stunt.

Seems our guys always blitz the lane they are standing in at the snap

Our DTs seem to engage an OL much more often than trying to shoot a gap.

We don't seem to overload to one side either on our blitz's.

Also, we don't play tight coverage on a lot of our blitz's.

If the whole single minded “1-0” mantra was truly bought in to and successful, one would expect that would allow the players and coaches to better compartmentalize and put a loss behind them.

You make it sound like a dozen teams finish undefeated every season and it's just our Franklin-led Lions who continually screw up.

Fleck was one touchdown and a 32-31 loss away last week from the treatment he got today. He's a good coach. He was a red zone INT better than us last week.

His mistake this week was thinking that his QB and WRs were going to duplicate last weeks game. Iowa wasn't going to allow that without absolute perfection. They are designed that way. The Minnesota defense giving up 3 TDs to start the game panicked them. They should have kept running the ball.

well I was part of the hockey program that won 3 national championships here at Penn State during my 4 years of undergrad and was drafted in the very late rounds of the MLB draft out of high school.

My father played AAA baseball and is in the minor league football hall of fame.

So other than that, I have no idea how sports works.

Lol Todd backed off real quick, didn't he

My point has nothing to do with going undefeated. It has everything to do with one loss turning into more or decreasing the confidence and performance of the team going forward. It is a perfectly valid criticism of Franklin and his methodology as the team has shown limited resilience after a loss. It does not mean they should win every game.

it does mean because you lose a heartbreaker to OSU, you shouldn’t lose the following week to an inferior team. A resilient, well coached team, would come out and destroy that inferior team and put that loss behind them. We wouldn’t have the mess we encountered today.
This is just silly.

Penn State came back after a loss last week and beat a good team today.

And are currently 9-1.

Scoreboard.

As long as you weren't one of the "Indiana is going to be a tough game" posters, sure. Mess? We are who we are. Everybody had this pegged as a 3-5 loss team. Solid coaching got us by that.

I was not, was hopeful that we beat them by 20+.

agree I thought this was a 3-4 loss team before the season however, I disagree coaching got us by that. Also, who the hell am I on those boards that “thought” it was a 3-4 loss team. Reality was, somehow we were 8-0 and should not have lost to an inferior Minnesota team. Regardless if we thought we should have had “3-4” losses. That has no bearing on how bad the last two weeks have been.

Better coaching did not get us to 9-1, better recruiting and more talent that expected couple with us catching Michigan and Iowa at the right time and MSU in a down year, led to a very fortunate 10-2 season. We also got a fair bit of luck, hell, we were lucky to win today.

We punched well above our weight but if the team we have seen the last two weeks showed up more frequently this year, it may have been a 5-6 loss team.

At the end of the day, the team got some folks excited with a bit of a fools gold type start and then losing to an inferior Minnesota team, really hurt.

I disagree on the talent thing. We have some kids who were overrated. Our 5* kids are irrelevant for the most part.

You catch teams when you catch em. To argue otherwise is to manipulate whatever argument you desire. Iowa is Iowa. Michigan is Michigan. Sparty is Sparty.

Everybody loves Galt for his S&C, but our players don't seem stronger than anybody. We might have a touch more speed, but we don't seem to scheme for it very well. I don't care that he got Clifford's 40 time below Trace's. Nor that Apke ran so well. Build us a disruptive DT. An OT that can step out and hold the rush.

He got called out on his credentials and he's responded to the challenge, don't be mad that he's objectively more credible than you or the rest of the Franklin fluff crew

They still should have beaten Minne****ingsota.

Think your points are valid though. Do not understand why YGM has been so average this year, and we are missing high end difference makers outside of Hamler, Friermuth and Parsons

YGM is going to be hard to define. Is he still out of shape after missing summer camp? Is he going through the motions knowing he's going pro? Between our rotations, and his safety play, he's not at risk. Sit out the bowl, train for the combine, he'll get drafted fairly high.

Clifford or Rahne has lost all faith in our X WRs too. We questioned the lack of use prior, but I think the drops last week sealed it.

The preservation of the two Freshman WRs redshirts along with 5 in the current class can be interpreted in many ways...
