Iowa news - 2024-25

Did you ask him exactly how one pays athletes illegally in today’s collegiate athletics?

I don't ask them anything because I won't interact with those deranged losers. I do get enjoyment from seeing them meltdown year after year after year whenever they fail to live up to their ridiculous expectations they set for their program. The reality is that they no longer make the claims about paying guys illegally, I was referencing their vast history of conspiracy theories over the years. There is always some reason outside of the control of their program as to why Penn State is so good when the simple answer is that Cael Sanderson is one of the all-time great coaches and has built a dynasty unrivaled by any other sport at any level in this country over the last decade and a half because of how good he is. It's no different from when Gable had Iowa as the dominant wrestling dynasty. He did it because he was that good at that time.

I’m sorry, it was merely a rhetorical question, but I do appreciate your response.

Not the consensus of Iowa fans, HR members. Well except the stalling stuff. Everybody wrestling against a Hawkeye is stalling seems to be damn near universal across the Hawk world.

My question is whether its nature or nurture. Given this pic of a recent Hawkeye baby I’m starting to think it’s genetic. Bless their hearts.

The level of acceptance surprises me. There are still several posters who are pissed and calling for changes from the top down, but there is an equal number making excuses and admitting that 2nd place at NCAAs will be an acceptable result.

When not a single poster calls out stuff like the Mesenbrink post I referenced above, it is the consensus of Iowa fans. I don't recall you standing up and calling out the idiocies on your board, but you sure dismiss their behavior here.
That poster is a known extremist-sounding troll for entertainment value only (although I feel they fail at that)

2nd would be a gift at this point.

Honestly, I read it and just kept scrolling. There's just no response to it because it idiotic and imbecilic. Even engaging someone who posted would have sullied my keyboard. It was just... f'ing weird.

And definitely NOT the consensus of the board. Come on man.

For the millionth time. I can't believe someone could be intensely pursued by Cael and the guys and still sign up for that dysfunction. To the point where I don't believe anyone that does was really ever a "Must have" to the staff.

It just doesn't compute to me that a rational actor would do that.

The world is littered with irrational people.

Some people aspire to be a big fish in a little pond.

In defense of the Iowa board, that poster is certifiable and best left alone rather than engaging him and thus encouraging further bad behavior.

Agreed. I read it and kept moving. Evil Monkey throws molotov cocktails all day long. You just need to accept it as part of the fabric of that board. Doesn't mean I or anyone else accepts his posts.

Well, somebody does if he gets likes.
True. There are about 10-15 crazies over there that hang together. Kinda like the aquatic people that live under the capitol city in Hunger Games. Then come the large amount of delusional fans, followed by the two dozen sane people.

I can’t blame Bassett because I’d probably take the money too, but I’m surprised someone would put that much effort in to the last 15 years of wrestling to trust the rest of my career to the Brand’s Brothers. I could’ve understood Oklahoma State. I know they say he got $5 million, but it’s not like Penn State or Oklahoma State would’ve given him zero. If he’s as good as people think he is, he would’ve made out really well financially. I don’t know how any objective wrestling person could think they would be developed properly at Iowa anymore.

I applaud the one year rentals for taking the cash. Guys like Parco or Teemer weren’t gonna win a national title, regardless of school. Take the check and hopefully save some of it.

I do wonder how long Slumlord Bob will keep spending this much money. You can’t be a moron and be this successful in business. At some point you would think he would want to see some return on his investment. I’m not saying he would stop giving, you would just think at some point he would use his influence to force them to hire a new coach. Very strange situation.

As a Penn State fan, I hope he keeps the Brands around for another 20 years

Ever hear of the Winchester Mystery House? Some rich people have a compulsion to building hallways and doorways (and apparently tunnels) leading nowhere.

Some of the most moronic stuff out there is funded by wealthy nutters.

What are the odds slumlord Boob offers a bag of cash for a new coaching staff.
That would be a mistake. TnT are great for college wrestling and the Iowa Way should remain at the U of Iowa. It’s the place for plodders that are also great wrestlers, ex P Kennedy, Bull Marinelli, Sorensen, M Evans, etc. They were meant to go to Iowa and the Hawkeyes should embrace that tough-guy mentality/style. My cousin dreams of wrestling for Iowa. He’s a horrible wrestler, but he’s a bully and a plodder and Iowa is his beacon. Iowa shouldn’t try to be another PSU. They need to be Iowa and be happy competing to be a distant 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th…. If Iowa got rid of TnT they would loose their character.

As a Penn State fan, I hope Iowa keeps the Brands around for another 15 years

One of the 'downfalls' with the bags is the inability to now relate to the wrestler/teenager. This is a sport that requires sacrifice and dedication and for a long time without $$. Now when this kids tell us something you have to really dig to see where it is coming from. Having a big bag does change one's outlook.

Was on HR/HB last night and was amazed that they were celebrating that next year they would have 5-7 AA’s. Not one hint of a champion. What a comedown from a few years ago.
Every year it’s, “wait ‘til next year!”

They are the Mets.

Or maybe Bob would take a different strategy. If he were to take the same bag of money and put it towards sponsorships for high level seniors and put it into the HWC, that might be more fruitful. It’s a strategic move that may take time to pay off, but I think it would work better.

It's almost like an awful lot of things in the sport began to change right about and right after Gable retired.....things that had given Gable a significant competitive advantage, one that Iowa is very likely never getting back...
4th. Nebraska and OkieSt.

Been there - fun tour. I wonder what Bob’s underlying guilt (Winchester heir was all of the lives lost to the guns) is that would make him certifiably in sane??

It would be worth our while to raise NIL money to keep the twins there. They will keep that program stagnant for manhood more years.
