Is Jimmy that much better than Kade??

5 or 6 with Hall wrestling. Heck we don't even know if Mark is going to stay around 5 years so wrestle him now....HE IS READY NOW !!!!
Must he win for the differential to be 5 or 6, or is that if he finishes 2nd, or 3rd or 4th?

Maybe, just maybe PA state titles are tremendous credentials but imperfect predictors of D1 college success.
I would venture to say "any state title/champion"...regardless of state, is an imperfect predictor of D-1 college success...being a PA state champ, let alone a 3-timer, makes it tougher to swallow when success doesn't accompany...NO DOUBT!

4 of them is any way.

To quote myself from another thread:

Just looking at the six 4 time PIAA champs from 1980 to before Jimmy and you will see that only half had stellar careers. Perhaps many fans selectively remember Kolat, Hughes & Hunter while ignoring the others.

Matt Gerhard: 11-6 @ PSU, ??? @ Pitt 0 NCAA, EWL (4, 4)
Ty Moore: 80-31-2, 3 NCAA (DNP, DNP, DNP), ACC (?, 2, 2)
Cary Kolat: 111-7, 4 NCAA (2, 3, 1, 1), BigTen (2, 1) EWL (1, 1), PSAC (1, 1)
John Hughes: 121-26-2, 4 NCAA (DNP, 7, 1, 2), 4 BigTen (3, 3, 1, 5)
Bob Crawford: ???? NCAA (DNP), PSAC (1) (I could only find mention of him wrestling one year for Clarion. Does anyone have more info?)
Jeremy Hunter: 123-7 NCAA (DNP, 5, 2, 1), BigTen (3, 2, 1, 2)

Jimmy Gulibon thus far: 63-38 NCAA (DNP, 5, DNP), BigTen (7, 6, 2)

I chose not to include Jim Conklin, Jerry Maurey & Mike Johnson because in my opinion, Pennsylvania & NCAA wrestling has changed drastically since the 1940s, 50s & 60s. Haines & Marsteller don't figure into the conversation since they came after Jimmy's high school career.

I have to assume Jimmy is our guy at the weight. If someone was neck and neck with Jimmy surely we'd have a Rasheed/Morelli situation at 141.

Jimmy is cursed by the bar he set for himself and the bar set by his teammates. I sit here in awe pondering the question Is Retherford/Nolf/Nickal > Taylor/Ruth/Brown. It's unbelievable. Is Suriano better as a freshman than Nico. It goes on and on.

So, I try to keep things in perspective. 10 - 15 years ago, Jimmy is the 2nd or 3rd best guy on the team. I'll bet his career stats (maybe I'll check later) are better than Doc Vecchio or James Yonushonis. Two guys I remember positively.

I've never seen a high-level wrestler cross their feet/get feet very close together as much as Jimmy (one pet peeve I have of him).

He seems like a really good kid. Good enough to make the lineup of a perennial national champ. Best we got at the weight. So I root for him.

I agree on being all-in with JG. I'm sure that our expectations and disappointment dwarf his own. He's got the talent to go with anybody, but he's gotta believe in himself. I would put more faith in Jimmy to outwrestle his seed than Kade.

Here's a question: do you think kids don't browse message boards? I'm trying to understand why you bash your own guys. You're trying to light a fire in them, maybe?

Don't you get it? The fans' need to live vicariously through the wrestlers, trumps the wrestlers themselves.

One thing to remember about Jimmy, is that he is consistent in one way: He wrestles very well IN TOURNAMENTS.

Still wouldn't mind seeing Kade for a couple matches to give him a shot at seeing where he is at, but Jimmy is a terrific tournament wrestler.

I suspect this thread was precipitated by the recent up-and-downs of Jimmy's matches this past weekend. A great win over Thorn, and tough loss to McCrystal. I just want to note that Jimmy's not the only up-and-down guy. And sometimes up-and-down guys wrestle other up-and-down guys. McCrystal has been kind of up-and down this year himself. He's beaten NCAA runner-up Meredith 6-2, Gasca 12-4 and barely lost to Kolodzik 8-6 SV. But he also has losses to Purinton 9-6 and Storr (ISU) 14-13. Watching McCrystal yesterday he was on a mission and all cylinders were firing. On a different day Jimmy may well have beaten him. Just saying that being up-and-down is very common except for the very few like Zain, Nolf, DT, ER. For me, Jimmy's our man and I'm behind him 100%!

I see improvement with Gulibon over last year. In his loses to Cruz and McKenna last year, he didn't seem to be in it in the last period compared to this year, he was aggressive and looking for the takedown until the end against those two. Even with the rough start against McChrystal, he didn't give up and got the 3rd period take down to avoid the major. Yes, still loses, but hopefully the effort will start translating into more wins for him this year.

Another awesome match, but give me Nickal

For some reason, Q is under appreciated on this board at times.

I think Q would figure out Nickal.

Q has slayed some huge dragons in his PSU career.

If they wrestle 10 times, I bet Q would win 5, 6 or even 7 times.

Didn't realize kolat lost 7 matches, any idea who he all lost too

On Haines I would wager that he becomes an AA

Oh man. Thomas is not going to be an AA. Coming out of high school I was certain as athletic as he is and the core strength he possesses he was destined to be very good.
I wish him well and I hope Eric Thompson develops him into an all-american, but that is something that I do not see happening.

2012 ESU Open: 1-2
2013 Edinboro Open: 1-2

2013 Binghamton Open: 4-2 (4th place)
2014 Scuffle: 5-1 (2nd place)
2014 B1G: 3-2 (7th place)
2014 NCAA: 1-2 (DNP)

2014 NLO: 3-0 (1st place)
2015 Scuffle: 4-2 (4th place)
2015 B1G: 2-3 (6th place)
2015 NCAA: 4-2 (5th place, AA)

2015 NLO: 3-0 (1st place)
2016 B1G: 2-1 (2nd place)
2016 NCAA: 2-2 (DNP)

2016 Keystone Classic: 4-2 (DNP)

Some good performances in there, and some not so great. Obviously, competition at the NLO is not top shelf. Overall, "terrific" seems a bit of an overstatement.

What board doesn't do this though?

That doesn't make it right or excuse the behavior. Personally I try never to say anything about anyone on a message board I wouldn't say to there face. No saying I always succeed in that regard but I do try.

If Jimmy even goes 2-2 at Nationals at this point, I'd consider it a win. He seems so far off the pace from the rest of his class. He got stuck by Irvin Enriquez in the wrestlebacks at Keystone, he's had virtually no chance in any of his matches against legitimate AA contenders apart from Thorn (who may not even be an AA contender, at best a low end 6-8 place).

I hope he can turn it around, but he's just not having a good season to this point. Kade isn't better, so it's fine to keep rolling with Jimmy, but his move to 141 has not been a good one.

I agree with you, just making an observation. I was just talking to someone from Iowa last night that is around their guys frequently and said that they check up on HR from time to time

IMO,the HR today is hardly what it was 6+ years ago and before we went on our run. To me its more of a bad blind date now, where it used to be a wicked/crazy ex wife when the hawks struggled.
