Bitter, bitter disappointment.
You cannot shoot 31% and miss close in all night long. A ghastly 19-61. NC State was so much bigger and stronger - our recruiting is, as someone suggested, built on a guard orientated 3-pt-shooting offense. Not good enough.
As for Phila, last pure Phila guy we had was Kyle Lowery. We recruit from all over the Northeast. But Jay needs to adapt - you have to have a creditable inside presence. I want to see big tough guys in there and I don't care if they can shoot - let them get their points on garbage, play tough inside D and bang.
I hate to say this but guys came up very small. Ochefu, Arch and Ennis combined for 5-27 and 0-9 from three. The only way we kept it close was Pinkston and Hilliard never quit and fought to the bitter end. They were carried out on their shields and did everything possible to do. They got zero help and guys need to do some self examination below the belt line. There are more than a couple players that are way too much mustard and not near enough hot dog.
Another thing VU MUST do is improve the non-con. The BE is what it is - good league, not great, with a bunch of pretty good teams and Villanova. If we have to go on the road, then go on the road. We had way too many weak sisters. The biggest names were Michigan, Illinois and Syracuse and none of them were worth a hoot. Not nearly good enough. And don't give me RPI. Go out and play a legit Top Ten team and a couple for sure NCAA teams (from big conferences, not VCU) and give it your best shot. And if you're on the road then so much the better.
I love Jay and he's not going anywhere. But he, like any coach who loses when he really needs to get it done, he has to look in the mirror and make the appropriate adjustments. Winning the Big East Tournament is always a great and worthwhile accomplishment, but the season has to go down as a failure overall. This team was Final Eight or bust and we just did not get it done. It is bitter - make no mistake about it.
