Does anyone know what weight he will be wrestling? In particular I am interested to know if the plan is for him to come down to wrestle against Taylor?

Sort of like being between a rock and a hard place ... David or Goliath. ;)
Very clever Jack. Of course, I expect no less from you.

I am just so fascinated right now as to whom Taylor will face for that Olympic spot.

Right now, Cox seems to be his biggest competition. If Nickal goes against Taylor I will be truly conflicted.

I can't get in J'Den's mind but I have to imagine he'd take his chances against DT instead of Snyderman. He's beaten DT before (however controversial the 3rd match was) and has won an olympic and world medal at 86KG. That being said I think the new weigh in rule will affect him definitely and give DT an advantage since DT is naturally at 86KG (that and he'll be much improved from 2018 when J'Den beat him)

@Tom McAndrew

Can you please elaborate on that new rule and how it could help Taylor?

In all the recent photos I’ve seen of J’Den, I would guess he is on the descent to 86kg. He has looked rather slim. JMO. I also believe Dieringer will be coming up (stated in an interview after he beat IMar a few months ago in the AWL?).

Objectively, I think trying to go through Taylor and Yazdani is not as tall of an order as trying to go through Snyder and Sadulaev. Just my two cents!

He could also be happy with another year at 92, yes?

certainly possible but i think he'd want some experience with the new weigh ins (i believe it's a shorter time between weigh in and competition as well as scratch weight the 2nd day rather than having a 1-2kg allowance). also he'd probably be able to win 92 in 2019 slightly underweight if he finds 86 too difficult, then go up to in 2020.

just speculation

Snyder won’t beat Sadulaev ever again, JMO

I don’t necessarily disagree, but I also don’t see what that has to do with Cox deciding between 86 and 97. Snyder’s the only wrestler in the last 5+ years to give Sadulaev a loss, and he would be quite the favorite over Cox. If Cox’s goals are to represent the USA at the Olympic Games once again and to win another Olympic medal, I genuinely believe his best chance is at 86kg.

Agreed, I should have just put my opinion as a side note . Sorry for confusion. I believe 86kg better for J’Den too with nothing to do with the Russian

I guess I just thought that 86 was hard for J'Den w/ day before weigh-ins, and that it just might not be in the cards for him w/ 2 hour weigh-ins. But yeah, if I was J'Den and could pick, I'd probably go after the guy I most recently beat.

I thought I read: As it stands right now, JC would have to wrestle a rested DT since he hasn't qualified at 86? Is that true? If so, maybe Cox will go down to 86 now so he win a World gold to negate that advantage? I really could use some help in my understanding of the path Cox needs to take to get equal footing with DT.

I'm confused on that as well. I remember DT wrestling elimination matches to earn the right to wrestle a rested Cox in a best of 3 final. Now Taylor is the defending champ at that weight.

I think I read the best of 3 final will take place at a different time now, not certain though.

This is just a rumor, but I’ve heard that he’s going to start training with John Smith to make a shot at 57kg

Thanks John, will Aaron be at the Open? Jr/Sr??

To the board: Did someone say that the OTT’s are at BJC?

Sandy Barbour said it wasn't ready to made public yet bc it isn't 100% a done deal.

David Taylor did at the Alumni Social and Sandy Barbour confirmed it. Have yet to hear if it is Freestyle, Greco, and Women's.

I’m not sure I’d say that Cox is any smaller than Snyder... here they are during the team USA wrestling practice at fan fest

I can't imagine Cox will move up or down this year. He is the returning World Champ at 92kg.
I believe the thinking of moving up or down this year is that if you win a world medal this year at an Olympic weight you will be guaranteed a spot in the finals for the OTT's next year, therefore not having to go through the qualifying tournament before the finals. Similar to how all the medalists from last year's world's are in Final X for this year. Could be some very interesting US Open and World Team Trial entrants this year at the Olympic weights as well as possibly an opening for some new faces at the non-Olympic weights.

With the Final x now being weeks after the challenge tourney, that advantage is lost.

Not necessarily because for the Olympics it might be a bit different. OTT's will still be in April next year. Not sure if they are employing a Final X type of situation to them. Also, the challenge tournaments to get to the finals are going to be packed with high level talent, much more than non-Olympic years. Just look at 86kg in 2016, when there was not someone already waiting in the finals, you had Cox, Dake, Taylor, Ruth, Herbert, Gavin, Perry, etc. Probably better to try and get the auto berth in the finals by winning the world medal this year than going through that type of gauntlet next year and more than likely having to face DT in the finals.

Ok just assumed they would do Final X for OTTs, but havent heard for sure.

It'll be interesting I guess. I assumed similarly because (a) it did work to generate interest; and (b) if you keep changing structures and process every ten minutes you're going to alienate fans.

Regardless of any branding tie-in, the present structure tilts the scales toward the non-incumbents, who no longer have to wrestle the incumbent the same day as the reward for getting through a brutal bracket. I think you find the best guy for the job by leveling the playing field so I favor the present approach. The incumbent already has an advantage of not having to go through that tournament once.

just to confirm, when you say "tilts the scales toward the non-incumbents" you mean that the competition now is more fair (rather than meaning the non-incumbents have the advantage), correct?
