I think the Pats felt the 2nd rd from the Niners was almost as good as the 1st rd from the Browns, since it was probably one of their later picks. Then, Jimmy G proceeds to win the last 5 games for the Niners which moved that 2nd rd down a number of spots.

I have read in Boston papers that was the reason.

Five games ..... Really shows the desperation NFL teams can feel at the QB position. That is a huge financial commitment.
