Back to the DT discussion, anyone else read about Franklin's recent comments regarding the DL?

Franklin discussed the defensive line unprompted and energetically, calling it the position group about which he's most excited. Which was interesting, considering that Franklin said after last year's loss to Michigan that the line, notably its tackles, needed to get bigger and stronger.

Well, tackles Hakeem Beamon (now 275 pounds) and Zane Durant (280) have done that. Franklin said both have gained necessary weight and suggested that Beamon, a returning starter, could be one of the nation's best tackles. Further, fifth-year senior Dvon Ellies, a charismatic personality like former tackle and captain PJ Mustipher, is working with an edge Franklin hadn't seen before. The combination led Franklin to this preseason prediction.

"We've got a chance to have one of the best defensive lines in the country from a depth and talent standpoint but also from a size standpoint," Franklin said. "... That's a position group that I'm really excited about, that I think can take us to the next level on defense."

Referenced in the SI article:

But..... but..... Wallace Brozo and LandoComoron told us the diametric opposite on both counts (last year's returners suck and we have zero depth....) - go figure!

The fact that you believe anything Coach Hype says speaks volumes. This week he said their is an open competition for every position every year this week. The man is a liar. It is part of the job.

You're such a f'ing jackass - the interviewer asked him what the biggest surprises were coming out of Spring Practice and getting ready to head into the Preseason Practice.... so CJF answers the interviewer's question and this, according to you this makes him a "liar" and "coach hype"..... but you're a PSU fan LMFAO! You're such a douche troll-boy. You would think you know more about what took place this Spring in practices, training sessions, etc.... and know as much or more than CJF relative to the team and the interviewer's question - you really are a pathetic little pos punk. What gives you the right to post something like this in regards to CJF and how is this not a blatant flame by a blatant troll???

Easy solution here, IGNORE Wallace Breen!

Well, beyond the fact that Franklin hasn't held an open competition for quarterback since he tried to replace Hack the instant he set foot on campus. Many other positions have not been subject to open competitions either. Coach speak is lying. Coaches lie in interviews and press conferences. It is what they do. Joe used to lie in interviews. He was more subtle to reduce the lie but he lied none the less. You used a known liar's word's for one of your baseless attacks. You are troll. You hijack every thread you post on. Then you throw a temper tantrum when someone pushes back.

So let me get this straight, a reporter asks CJF to give his opinion via a question.... CJF gives his opinion via an answer to the reporter's question.... and this makes CJF a "liar" according to you, but you aren't a flaming poser-troll douchebag?

Like I've said repeatedly, and you prove yet again, you're not just a pos poser-troll, but a royal douche to boot.

The NFL is the NFL. Some clown drafted Tim Tebow in the first round. Never the less, Dotson is the third option in Washington, playing almost entirely in the slot where he can face zone coverage and hasn't done much when playing outside. My point stands. He is a very good receiver, he is going to have a longer than average NFL career, but is not a legit #1.

Tebow?

Nothing compared to Clifford.

Read the experts -

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky was also impressed with Clifford’s late-game heroics, albeit in a simulated environment without any pads on.

While real football appears to be so close and yet so far away, these are the types of moments you look forward to in June. Clifford’s two-minute drive won’t matter come training camp, but it’s an important building block for a young quarterback trying to earn the No. 2 job.

Outside the building, the confidence around Clifford has been less than favorable since the Packers made him a fifth-round selection. Some thought the pick was too rich for Clifford, who had experience as a four-year starter in the Big Ten but may lack the arm talent and accuracy to stick in the NFL. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein considered him a priority undrafted free agent.

None of that mattered once Clifford arrived in Green Bay. The Packers aren’t interested in paying a veteran to hold a clipboard, so they are letting a rookie and a practice squad carryover in Danny Etling duke it out. So far, Clifford has made a positive impression, says head coach Matt LaFleur.

“He’s done some nice things, it’s just, he’s a young quarterback and we’ve thrown a lot at these guys. Specifically with that position, obviously, Jordan’s getting the bulk of the reps, and (Clifford’s) been splitting the second reps with (Etling), so there are very limited reps for those guys. But I think he’s done a nice job, and certainly in the two-minute drill there at the end of (practice), I thought he did a nice job just getting completions and taking a few chances and made some throws.”

LaFleur also added something to silence those who doubted Clifford’s potential.

“I do think he’s an NFL draft pick,” he said. “He’s definitely a talented player.”

The backup quarterback competition should heat up from here. Next week the team will reconvene for mandatory minicamp and that will be it before the real test begins with the start of training camp in late July. From there, Clifford will have to impress throughout the preseason if he wants to be the guy behind Love.

Actually, I think don't have a point to make. You are criticizing a drop back passer for not having the footspeed to get his frame turned around and his shoulders set to make a throw that is not in any pro-style offense but is a staple for glorified option quarterbacks such as Trace McSorley. You are cherry picking when the volume of evidence indicates he was our most precise passer since at least Kerry Collins. Perhaps Wally Richardson.
He made those throws when he went pro...oops.

Should have replaced hack with mcsorley.

Should have replaced hack with mcsorley.
He wouldn't be Penn State's head coach if he did such a stupid thing. He would have been fired after back to back 2 or 3 win seasons. He was very nearly fired after Hack somehow got us to back to back 7 win season's despite the gross incompetency of Franklin's first offensive staff. Somehow someway, Hackenberg and the defense willed us to back to back bowl games. If Franklin hadn't ran him off for his senior season, we make the playoffs in 2016, ruined shoulder and all with the QB leading the way instead of being carried.

Standard response from one of Franklin's groupies. You insult everyone that doesn't agree with you. There are a few others here that do the same. Franklin has a history of making untrue statements in interviews and press conferences. It is called coach speak. Franklin does it more than most. When you regularly say things everyone knows is false, "open competitions for every position every year", what does that make you? I don't believe anything Franklin says in a press conference or interview given his history. I abhor coach speak. They might as well not say anything. You used an example coach speak, as if it were a unchallengeable fact, to insult me. I pushed back. You are the troll. I am here to talk football, you are not. There are a few others here who don't want to talk about football or Penn State. They only want to defend Franklin and insult anyone that dares to criticize.

This is one of your best pieces of fantasy yet troll-boy - O'Brien left the cupboards completely bare when he crept out of State College after repeatedly lying to the administration and his players that he wasn't leaving. He did zero recruiting for the 2014 Class while interviewing and negotiating with the Texans.... PSU had a short roster as it was due to the NCAA's illegal sanctions (which were removed after 2013 as the NCAA faced a losing Court battle) and many of the decent players that still had eligibility left after O'Brien's deal with the Texans was announced and he was proven to have lied to his players just days before (at the time, players could transfer without losing eligibility if a Head Coach left or was replaced) transferred out. O'Brien only won 7 games in 2013 to begin with - CJF inherited a team that had a total of 8 OL and could not even run Spring Practices without bringing on student walk-ons the roster was so depleted.

Your notion that CJF inherited some great team from O'Brien and that Hack was incredible before CJF got there is utter tripe and fantasy (IOW, par for the course with your ramblings). Hack's QB Rating was middle of the pack B1G in 2013 (9th Best QBR) - his Completion Percentage was middle of the pack (9th best in 2013). His interceptions and sacks went up in 2014 because O'Brien effectively left PSU with no Scholarship Offensive Lineman (literally one of the worst recruiters in PSU history and essentially did zero recruiting in 2013 for the 2014 class as he was first marketing himself to the NFL and then negotiating his deal with Texans. O'Brien won with Paterno's players, not his own. He left CJF and Hackenberg to suffer the consequences of his zero-recruiting tenure). BTW, CJF did not chase Hackenberg out-of-town; Hackenberg received advice that he would be a fairly high draft choice if he left - that's why he left.

Your notion that he would have had a better year than McSorley in 2016 is more of your fantasy. CJF took a completely depleted roster in 2014 due to O'Brien's actions (zero recruiting in 2013, massive player transfers after O'Brien proved to be lying to players that he wasn't leaving, a short 65-man roster to begin with, etc.....) and after 2 years of his own recruiting took PSU to an 11-2 regular season record and a B1G Championship. You're so full of shit, it isn't even funny troll-boy.

Make up your mind. Did you want an open competition for QB or not? Mcsorley was the best qb. Mcsorley won more games. Hack was not that good. Hack was a 7 win QB with O'Brien.

If you are a coach and you say you will have an open competition at every position every year, you have it or you don't say it. We all know Franklin isn't telling the truth when he says stuff like this. This is one of many reasons why I don't believe anything he says.

If Beamon is one of the best tackles in the country teams are in trouble vs us.
Before I read that quote from Franklin I was under the opinion that Durant would beat out Beamon and be the starting 1 tech DT this season because from what I saw Durant (true soph in 2023) was more active and reportedly had gotten significantly stronger and bigger in the S&C program whereas Beamon (redshirt SR in 2023) after many years in the S&C program still played in 2022 in the 250's.

I just hope this isn't Franklin building up a Senior in hopes that he gets the message, feels the leadership responsibility, ........ But I take Franklin at his word.

I'd say 30% chance. Have to beat either Ohio St or Michigan and win the rest. If both Ohio St and Michigan weren't also playoff caliber teams then the odds would be higher. Say for example if we were in the PAC10, Big12, or ACC. Then we'd be a better than 50% chance of making the playoffs IMO.

Right. That's Beamon. Of course.
And Chop. Both significantly undersized and for some reason both on the same side of the line. Why wouldn't you put the SDE on the same side as the 3 tech DT? Seems like that would make sense from a run defense perspective.
