Joseph's vs. Hall's weight....

It is going to be awfully difficult for Bojo to make 174 next year also. He is enormous for the weight. I don't think it is out of the question for them to redshirt Martin next season, as he still has one left I believe.

Both Anthony and Zahid are moving up next year.

Zahid's new problem is Bo, and Anthony's new problem is Mark.

Just a hunch Zahid Valencia goes 197 next year, he was 106 pounds in 9th or 10th grade and seems to be growing still. He did wrestle at 184 a few times this year probably because the cut to 174 is difficult on a regular basis, he looked bigger than all 174 pounders except MAYBE BoJo

He kind of has to for Ohio State to have any shot at the team title, need BoJO and Martin in there, after next year they lose BoJo, Nato and Snyder, so its next year or a long wait if ever for another team title, wont be easy to replace those 3.

The problem with Hall adding weight is that he's an athlete and good athletes move fast ( Zahid Valencia worry anyone in the lead up to the nationals ?) there's no guarantee that the extra weight is not just going to slow him down. What I would like to see is VJ filling out and wrestling 174 and Mark listening to his mother and wrestling 165.

No

There is no problem with anyone's weight from 149-up. Certainly let's not have a bunch of tired out skeletors dying in the 3rd because of some outdated view of what weights guys should be at.

Cael and crew have got this

Exactly, cutting weight for an entire season can wear a wrestler down. That's why we see guys like Collica and Crutchmer start to gas on day 1 of the tournament.

When it was mentioned to David Taylor that Hall looked undersized, David said, in a matter of fact way, "all our guys are small".

This is just one of many ways Cael is changing the wrestling landscape.

My grandson wrestles in Az (qualified for States as Fr) and my son-in-law (a youth wrestling coach) says he sees coaches putting less pressure on kids to cut weight ... calls it the Penn State effect.

Trust me, the wrestling community everywhere is aware of what is happening Happy Valley. It's they who need to change, not us.

As Mark Hall says, "it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog"

Matt Brown wrestled a couple times at 197. More likely it was because Zeke was trying to win duals and liked the matchup better. Let's not over-think this.

Agree, with next year being the last for Nato, Bo and Snyder, Ryan is going to go all-in.

Valencia and Jordan missed there chance because Hall will only be bigger and better next year at 174.

Sounds good to me, and I agree with Cael's approach on this.

From my expert's seat (a recliner at home in North Carolina), I wondered if Nolf might be getting big for 157. If he moved to 165, that would require some serious lineup adjustments.

So you want to weaken the entire line up?

Think about it though: Nickal to 97 takes Moore back to the 2 seed, and thwarts Tanman's plan. Mouse can deal with Martin, and win his share.

Lootttt of misinformation on this site about how quickly water weight can be regained. With the 2 pounds allowance and 5 hours until the match Bo Jo was probably 184-186 at max.
I've thought about starting a thread about weight management for wrestlers, as there sure seems to be views from all over the place regarding 1 hr weigh-ins, 2 hr weigh-ins, etc and how much wrestlers actually weigh by the time they wrestle.
I just assume for a morning weigh-in a guy could gain 7-10 lbs by the evening, and still take it off for the next morning's weigh in. Or not, lol, and they need to keep it closer (e.g. 3-5 LBs).
Would love to read some educated opinions on the topic ....

From talking to numerous wrestlers and a couple of friends in the medical field, some of which were also former wrestlers, here's what I gather. One, it's all about percentage of body weight, so BoJo could've gained more raw pounds than someone like Lizak in that time. Two, you don't want to overload, you'll make yourself ill by doing so. The most weight it gained in the first hour post weigh-in and that can be as much as 3-4 pounds, each hour after you're looking at maybe a max of one pound, possibly a bit over.

If I was coaching the team I would be as invested in VJ as I was in Mark Hall. As a fan I've watched Mark Hall for years and love what he can do when he's at 74kg and not managing a side of beef like BoJo. To get a sense of what I'm talking about watch his quarter final match in the junior worlds against a kid from Georgia (the country) the take down is completely artistic followed by a series of turns to a Tech fall. It's heart stopping awesome wrestling and he was never at that level all season wrestling at 174.

5 hours counts as more misinformation. Weigh-ins were 9 AM on Saturday and the 174 match started after 9 PM so 12+ hours for BoJo to gain weight. That said your max number is probably in the ballpark.

It varies. I weighed in at 158 in the mornings and would way around 172 that night. We cut hard and tore up our bodies. Cael is transforming the sport (yet again) with all of these "undersized" wrestlers. HR cries for more and bigger cuts because they are caught in the past in all things wrestling, but you guys shouldn't be. Fully hydrated athletes get sick less and injured less than guys who are constantly dehydrating to make weight. Nolf isn't cutting hard thus the huge gas tank. I think you look at performance and go from there. There are guys who can cut quite a bit and stay very strong in the third period, but they are rare. Big weight cutters (I was one) spend every waking moment wrestling the scale while guys like Joseph,Hall,Zain,Jason, etc. spend every waking moment thinking about skill improvement. I won't be surprised if Bo decides he wants to go 197 at some point because he can win there just the same. Cael gets this better than any coach in the country. Starvation isn't fun.

So you're basically admitting you want to weaken the lineup for Mark Hall. Joseph is not winning it at 74 where Hall just did.

+1000

I unfortunately spent much of my high school and college career thinking more about making weight than improving technique. Cost me big time in hindsight and wish I had had coaches with a different philosophy or been smart enough to realize massive weight loss wasn't the answer to winning championships.

Thanks for responding JW.
14 LBS AM to PM - definitely more than I figured. Almost 10% body weight.
Maybe around 10% is around the max for a morning weigh in to PM wrestling.
Question - could you get back to 158 if you had to for the next morning's weigh in?

You seem a little testy considering the fact that I'm just a middle-aged fan with an opinion. Watch the match and have your mind blown. If it helps you to sleep you should know that I'm utterly profoundly impressed by this team and I am just plain old grateful they exist AS THEY ARE.
And it's f**ing tiring hearing all the bs about stalls and calls when the kid is winning titles while going up a weight (and he is) for his team.

Im not testy just not sure why you thought changing a winning fornula was good. Luckily Cael will make the final decison and he's pretty good at those. We are all on the same team here.

Differences next year:
0.No changes 149-185, no winning scenario there.
1.Cortez is back and a lot better.
2.Nick Lee at 141.
3.Cassar at 197 after winning the wrestle off. And then there is most of the season to see if that works.

Have you ever tried to put on as much weight as possible after a weigh-in and then wrestle less than 24 hours later? I have. There is NO WAY Bo could add 30 pounds from Friday to Saturday night and even get through a 7 minute match without getting sick.

Nobody said anything about putting the weight back on.

10 pound difference at most. Look at Bo's legs. Hall probably weighs 180 right now. Bo in the high 180s.

No. It is way more. Hall is small. He is only about 5'8 or less. He looks like he would wrestle 157.

No way in heck could I have made weight doing that the next day. That was what I would weigh at night after all the wrestling was done and I had gorged on everything in sight for several hours. We were always told to stay 6 lbs. or less over if there was a second day weigh in. The more you had to dehydrate your body to make weight the more you would gain back over the day. Low energy and a sick feeling prevailed. Wrestlers and coaches are so much smarter today.
