Junior WTT

Berge at 149 in 2018-2019 and then 157 after Nolf leaves. Teske is 125 in 2018-19 and Teasdale and RBY wrestle off for 133 with the loser RS and then one of them going to 141 in 2019/20 pushing Lee to 149. Verklereen could be the odd man.

Teasdale at 125 this season, I would think. Has Cael indicated otherwise?

Has Cael indicated Gavin will be 125?

Cael hasn't indicated one way or another.
Anything stated as fact is presumptuous. We all have guesses, but as others have said, no way the coaches will state anything publicly.

Here's a couple rulebook items to consider, given that the Teske's, Teasdale's, and RBY's of the world have not spent one second at an official practice;

Summer Practices, organized and financially-supported, are prohibited. No way the coaches will go near the new guys in the summer in a practice room.

All voluntary practice time has the following criteria;
-- No requirement to report anything to the coaches
-- No time requirement
-- Cannot be recorded
-- No penalty if a wrestler fails to participate

Starting with the first day of Fall classes, 8 hours of practice/week is allowed, but with restrictions.

OFFICIAL, countable, practices (20 hrs/week) start October 10, each year.

The coaches haven't seen the kids in the room yet...highly doubtful we'll know anything till October. My speculative guess has it Teasdale, RBY, Lee, Berge...1st 4 weights, with Teske and Verkleeren nipping at the heels of the 125 and 149 guys. Whoever doesn't go at 125 (Teasdale or Teske), redshirts.

Another possibility is that Teasdale and Teske do an active redshirt campaign through the Scuffle while Schnupp holds down 125. This would allow the coaches to see who fits where and not pull a shirt until they have more info.

Yeah, and to be honest, this seems the "most Cael" approach. Heck, we might get Carpenter or someone at 133 for the 1st half of the season too.

True. Coaches could get them a good many more matches in all the opens to gauge their adjustments to college.

Doubtful...:)

First true test is generally the Scuffle. However, the quality of the competition at the Scuffle last year was way down from previous years and I expect that will continue. Still, I agree that final decisions on redshirts for true frosh won't be made until after the Scuffle. Possible exception being if only Teske of the true frosh can make 125 for the upcoming season.

My guess is we get RBY for the 1st half and the 2nd half. I'm also guessing that we get Teasdale at 125 for the whole season. Those are "speculative guesses".

I am not sure I would label that Cael's approach.
Nico started right off the bat and it was because that was the plan. Zain started right off the bat, and Zain starting was the plan early on.
Dylan Alton was going to start as a true freshman but was unable to wrestle for 7 minutes at 141, so Andrew started as a true freshman.
Morgan McIntosh started as a true freshman.
All of those guys started because they were the best guys at the weight and it was part of the plan.

Mark Hall did not compete until he had some matches to see if he was ready. Everybody knew he was ready, but the plan was Geno/Rasheed and redshirt Hall. Hall nagged his father and Cael to come off his shirt.

The only one that maybe was close to a let's see how this plays out was Lee/Cortez this year. If Cortez had been both, more durable and better Nick would have redshirted.

Schnupp and Carpenter are known commodities and assuming everybody is healthy, the only way either gets any starts is because they are the best guy at the weight. It isn't Cael's approach, nor is it likely going to happen.

Hall situation comparable to Lee, in that Morelli was right around top 10 when the switch was made (actually ranked higher than Cortez was for most of this year).

I am not well connected like Spyker by any means but there have been some rumors that Teasdale's slight drop in total domination over the past 12 months is weight related. He is still awesome of couse but a year and a half ago he was the second coming of Spencer Lee. Watching him I think he definitely has room to be comfortable above 125 and the cut 'might' be affecting him. I will admit he has shown pleanty of late match energy in some meets (i.e. vs. Glory a few months ago) I think he could use the extra year and few pounds of muscle as he does get caught underneath from time to time.

Most dont see it this way, but net net I see Teasdale as the more lkely candidate for a redshirt next year with Teske maning 125, RBY going 133, and Berge making a somewhat tough cut to 149 for only the one year.

2020 has RBY shirting or moving to 141 while Teasdale goes 133, and Berge moves up to 157. The interesting one will be if Nick Lee moves to 149 - hence a future RBY shirt or move up discussion. Assuming Bosiello is 125 he either starts while Teske shirts, or shirts himself eyeing 2021.

There you go, Cael can now focus on skills and conditioning, now I will start to strategize on the higher weights.

My money is on Bravo-Young at 133 while Teasdale and Teske both redshirt. This team does not need one of those two in the lineup at 125 to win another championship.

I was looking on Flo's HS rankings and missed the Alirez kids name. What is his first name and what weight did he compete at last year. any one who takes out Nick Lee is worth finding out more about them!

He's a HS Junior from CO. 3X State Champ, this year at 145. There was more posted about him and his family in this or another thread this weekend.

RS both Teas and Teske makes less than no sense whatsoever.

Especially considering we have Busiello coming in in 2 years. Under such a scenario Teske in particular may have a hard time finding his way into the lineup. Why save where you have an abundance?

A case could be made that our best 125 next will definitely be Teasdale and it is unlikely he can make weight at 125 beyond this year, so he shouldn't shirt. I do agree with you on that we probably don't need the points from 125 this year, and this plays into my thinking to shirt Teasdale first while Teske will prove adequate and a big improvement over Schnupp this year.

Let's face it if we happen to get an AA that would be gravy. Teas is a strong maybe, Teske doubtful, but both are far better than Schnupp.

I think there is very little (probably none) chance Busiello ever wrestles 125 in college. He was at 126 this year as a HS junior and was tall and skinny for the weight.

It makes perfect sense if Teasdale has already outgrown 125. Considering you just said yourself on this very page that the cut may be affecting his performance (something I agree with), not sure how you can now tell me it would make no sense to redshirt him along with Teske, especially considering you agree that they don't need either at 125 to win.

As Nova stated, it's highly unlikely Busiello will be a 125 in college meaning the path is open to Teske becoming a 4 year starter at 125 even after a redshirt and it' my opinion that Teske would benefit greatly from a redshirt.

If both Teasdale and Teske redshirt if neither either they cannot make 125 and wrestle 7 minutes, they are not good enough to wrestle in college this year or a combination of both.

In the same thought process as when Zpain RS’d after his FR year, I believe the case could be made for N Lee to RS this year. In 19/20 he takes over 149 and Berge moves to 157. 125-141 would be manned by Teske- Teasdale-RBY this year. RBY is the wild card in this thought. How hard was his cut to 132 last year? TIA

Busiello's progression 8th through 11th grades has been 99, 106, 120, 126. I'd give his chances at 125 about 0%, give or take :). Growth at that age can be all over the map...best way, I've learned, is to look at Mom and Dad, as one thing these kids can't fight is genetics. He also has about 6 months before the Early Signing Period of NLI's, though it appears Adam came out of the womb wanting to be a Penn Stater. After his Senior Season, and a RS year, heaven only knows...

As for the first 3 weight classes in 2018-19, I'd recommend taking a one-year look, then peak into the future a bit to see where everyone fits, as I believe their redshirts can be staggered (for Teske, Teasdale, and RBY), if they're the best at their weight, and the weight certifications allow for options/choices (for example; Teasdale at 125). Also to consider; (1) how the kids adapt to college life, and (2) the desires of the wrestlers. I suspect the coaches have discussions along those lines, with the wrestler and their family, during the recruiting process.

Having the wrestlers in State College during the summer is a huge benefit acclimation-wise, and I'm guessing most new recruits will be on campus soon. Still, RS's are a good move when an extra year of growth, in all areas of life, is needed.

There is one thing many of you guys seem to overlook re what our needs are, and whom we should redshirt.
All the discussion whether we can win with 8 scorers or such, is misguided.
The goal is not simply to win another NCAA title.
No, no.... the goal is win the title, while breaking the all-time scoring record
THAT is the end toward which all our attention and energies must be directed.

Good discussion. But I'm not buying the "we don't need his points premise". Too much can and has happened on the road to all of these titles. Did we need Nick Lee's points last year? Certainly. Did we need Mark Hall's in '17? Maybe the Monday morning QB math says we didn't, but yet he came out of redshirt and replaced a guy who I believe would've AA'd.
My own uninformed opinion, 2 of the 3 freshman lightweights go this year and we may not know which 2 until January.

I think Teasdale is not too big for 125 by any means, so it may have been a weight management issue more than "cutting too much". Hopefully the staff will be able to control it better.

Yeah, I think that nutrition and weight management plans is one of many of the "little things" our staff get right that pay off in a big way. It'd be great if that's a key piece to the puzzle for Gavin

Assuming your Bussiello's growth projections are accurate it seems to make even more sense to get years out of Teske at 125 while we can. Teasdale at 125 is also sounding like more of a long shot but he is preferred. If not we have Teas, RBY and Busiello all at 133 in 2 years. Adam may start to rethink his Freshman year/8th grade PSU commit with that log jamb in front. I still see little logic in shirting both Teas and Teske next year.

I dont think Teske is necessarily the long term solution at 125 either. A stud definiitely, but liklely a low AA career at best. Well know for sure later in the year. If Busiello isnt the answer we may have to start putting out the all court press on Tre. Mastrogiovani. He's next in line to debate about growth patterns.

One thing is certain finding a top 4 year 125er is like capturing a photo of big foot. I may never get over Spencer not staying home. That one really hurt.

Everything I've heard, which is enough, is that Busiello has been unwavering in his verbal commitment. Again, we'll know for sure this November, maybe. He just finished his Junior year in HS, and after graduating, could delay enrollment, redshirt, then get plugged in somewhere in 2021-22, which is too far into the future for me to think about.
