Kirk Cousins...somebody explain to me why a team would pay him

I am reading where he might become the highest paid player in the league. The guy is a decent NFL QB, nothing more. How is he so highly sought after and looking at making Top 3 in the league money. Just from a QB perspective alone he had the 15 highest QB rating last year. What am i missing?
I never understood it either. Colt McCoy actually won the starting job in Washington but then got injured during a game and then not only lost his starting job but was never even given another chance.

No question Cousins is better than Foles?? No question?? Who holds the NFL record for TD passes in a game? Who threw 27 Tds vs 9 int in a year??
No question? Really ?

Yeah, no question. One guy was cut last off-season and signed a 2 yr 7M contract. The other guy is going to sign a 4yr 120M contract this year.

There is NO questions about how much better Cousins is than Foles. Not a thought anyone is having. If Cleveland traded for Foles they'd likely still take a QB in the first and they'd be losing draft picks. Foles shouldn't be on anyone's radar other anyone's radar until Cousins is signed by someone. And Philly isn't trading Foles with the uncertainty involving Wentz

Starting QBs don't become free agents at 30 years old often in the NFL. This is why Cousins will cash in
Cousins is a great QB as long as you don't make the playoffs then his production goes in the tank - opposite of Foles - not sure they are as far apart as you think they are.

I completely agree. Being a long suffering Jets fan I hope they don't sign him.

What's that have to ability?

It shows how people who are paid to analyze how good football players are have judged them the last two years.

Or we could go with your opinion. However, you think Foles, Ajayi and #32 are worth the #1 pick and are citing ‘most TDs in a game’ to make your case

He’s started 1 playoff game. 29/46 63% 1TD 0 INT 1 rushing TD

What you're missing is that salaries in the league go up every year and there are a fair number of teams that have a marginal player at the position and would like to upgrade to someone who they perceive as being better. Also the salary cap for 2018 is expected to be around $179M which is $20M more than last year which gives teams more economic flexibility. Distilled down it's basically the forces of supply and demand coupled with purchase expectations.

I've never said the latter. To the former, it just shows how wrong some evaluators are How wrong some schemes are for people. Look no further than the Rams under Jeff Fisher and the Rams today. How did that total bust QB from Cal go from being laughed out of the league to the playoffs in one year???
Let's be real here, if Nick Foles were a FA he'd command more than Kirk Cousins. Remember guys that 'know' drafted Tom Brady in the 5 th round

Hahahahahaha

Ok, have a good one!

I like Kirk living here in the DC Metro area. (Eagle fan though).

I think he’s going to be disappointed when Free agency starts and he doesn’t get what he thinks he’s going to get. I think the Redskins realized what we are saying that he’s good but not worth 30 Million a year.

Hope he’s happy where he lands.

So it took them two years driving his price up and screwing over every other nfl team by franchising him two years and paying him 24 mil a year because they figured he wasn’t worth 30 when the coulda signed him for less than 20 the two years prior? Makes sense in Redskin logic.

My guess is that the Redskins were holding out hope that they could sign him to a reasonable amount/years. I also think that part of the reason Cousins never signed is that there is something about the skins that he doesn’t like. The owner? The coaching staff? The area? I don’t know. But i find it interesting that they could come to an agreement.

I would even think that the skins were trying to get him on the cheap saying we just gave you 2 franchise level “signing” bonus and thought that cousins would give them the benefit of the doubt.

It will be inter to see where he lands.

You're the one that made the definitive statement that he would which anyone that follows the NFL would laugh at
Lots of people may laugh at him. He doesn't really pass the look test. OTOH when did Cousins have a 122 pass rating over a full season. Yeah I know he never has

Again--laughing at you not Foles. Cousins in the open market >>>>>>>>>>>> Foles. Everyone but you seems to know that. The only reason Foles was brought up was that he's cheaper if the Eagles decide to move him.

"The 29-year-old has been one of the NFL's most productive quarterbacks since becoming the Redskins' full-time starter three years ago. During that time, he ranks fourth in passing yards, sixth in passer rating, seventh in total QBR and eighth in touchdown passes."

This is why someone (Jets, Broncos or Viking) are going to pay him. Personally, I think the Broncos make the most sense. Vikings should roll with Keenum or Bradford. Jets can take the other one. Cards or Bills take a chance on Bridgewater.

I thought either Jacksonville or Denver made the most sense. So by process of elimination, Denver it is.

As a skins fan I was glad to see him go. Never won games that mattered and grew tired of the nice guy routine. To me it was fake.

He better choose a place like Minnesota where all the pieces are there because he doesn’t win unless he gets tons of help

Another Skins' fan here. I never thought he was fake but, yes, he wasn't exactly the guy you wanted to execute a do-or-die two-minute drill.

To each their own but I don't believe Cousins had the supporting cast any QB needs in Washington. Not that the Skins didn't try but their decision making was far from solid. It should be interesting to see how Alex Smith does in Washington

everybody knew Foles couldn't beat the Falcons, everybody knew Foles couldn't beat the Vikings, and still everybody knew Foles couldn't beat the Pats

lot's of people are laughing at this post season state line including Chip 'what was I thinking' Kelly

Lots of people laughing at a 115.7 QB rating in the post season. Dream on

Wentz is better than both, in Wentz were going on the open market today, even injured, he would command much more than either Cousins or Foles.
Geez, way to miss (or avoid) my point. You used Foles' 122 rating to say that he's better than Cousins. Why doesn't this say that Foles is better than Wentz, as Wentz's best yearly rating was 101?

As long as we're talking about quarterback ratings, Cousins' lifetime rating is 93.7, Foles is 87.4. Why should we not then say that Cousins is better than Foles?

Remember, you're the one who brought ratings up.

Foles has proven he can win with the pressure of the playoffs on him. I'd say that makes him better than Cousins

maybe Foles is better than Wentz, based on that rating. My point was, not everyone is laughing at the thought Foles might bring more on the open market then Cousins. Kirk never had a 122 rating, not many have. People act like Foles isn't worthy to start for Riverdale Baptist JV. Nick Foles is a proven NFL QB, and anyone with a brain (which 78 doesn't have) would most likely scratch their head over who is worth more on the open market, Foles or Cousins. But Foles won't be on the open market so we are really talking to just talk. I do believe the next contract Nick Foles signs (unless for some reason he decides to stay with the Eagles) with be for $30+ million.

Joe flacco proved he could win in the pressure of the payoffs. Ask a ravens fan how they feel about him and his contract a couple of years later.

It's honestly adorable anyone believes that Foles would get more money right now on the open market than Cousins...lots of bitter Skins fans and high Eagles fans

You don't know what you're talking about. Every Redskin fan is happy that Kirk is moving on. We all know he's a dead end. Quit trying so hard to win a stupid argument on a football message board, it's unseemly.

As a Redskins fan, I'm not happy that he's moving on because he's terrible or anything. I'd just happy that he's moving on because I don't think his pending contract will match his ability. He did show up small in big moments of several games (and for 60 straight minutes in week 17 of 2016), but due to his overall ability, he's still in that 10-12 range in my mind in terms of top NFL QBs. If he was ready to sign on for 3-4 years at 24-25 million, I would have been fine with bringing him back.
