Le'Veon who?

Assuming Conner stays healthy it definitely isn't bad news. Plus, I can't wait to see how this plays out with the CBA since he didn't sign the contact. I won't be shocked at all if the Steelers try to make this as difficult as possible on him

If true that he isn’t reporting, I’m guessing the Steelers said “don’t report and we’ll release you next year”. They do not want the distraction this year. Things are going fine without LB, so no need to introduce a cancer into the locker room at this point.

I read a football writer say that although the deal such as you describe are technically against the rules, practically speaking they can't be prevented and it could happen with Bell. So yes, it wouldn't surprise me if Bell and the Steelers had reached some kind of informal deal where both have agreed to not use their bullets against the other.

Not an NFL or Steeler fan but LB just proved he wasn’t vital to the team and diminished his market value plus losing a year’s pay. Not a Rhodes scholar.

Happy for Conner. Yeah, yeah, we all know where he played at college but seems like a genuinely good guy.

Steelers can place the transition tag on him for next year which gives them the opportunity to match any offer. It could be used to make him and his agent squirm a little but they will let him go and get a 2020 3rd round pick. Good bye and good luck.

I was thinking about the reason for the Steelers success the past few years. It seems like whoever runs the ball does well. Big Ben always seems to have plenty of time to throw. The key to the Steelers success is their great offensive line. It may be the best in pro football. The linemen are mostly unheralded, except maybe for Pouncey. The reason their OL is so good is Mike Munchak. He has taken a group of mostly ordinary talents and made them into the best OL in football. And who is the key to Mike Munchak's ability to coach?? One answer: Joe Paterno.

I contend that the reason the Steelers are doing well can be traced to Joe Paterno's influence. Without Joe Paterno's influence on Munchak the Steelers would be an ordinary NFL team. The Paterno statue should be located outside Heinz Field in recognition for the effect that Paterno has had on Steelers football.

I consider this good news. Steelers are hitting on all cylinders so I was concerned about Bell coming in and messing up the team chemistry. He would be nice insurance for Conner IF he was ready, willing and able, but I have my doubts that would be the case. My only concern was if the Steelers pulled their offer, he could end up with a contender and end up facing them in the post season however if Bell does not report, that can't happen. This would also save the Steelers a bunch more of cap $$ next year as well.

Someone please explain how you can enter into a contract for multiple years or service and then hold out with no consequences?
I’ve always been dumbfounded by the greed on both sides.
I do feel LB is more a product of the Steeler system. However, I believe someone will pay him.

he isn't under contract, that's why he can hold out without being fined....But then again, he isn't making anything

No consequences??? He is losing $15 million by holding out!

Down to the basics. He may not have been the best answer as Penn State's head coach, but I'm sure his impact on our OL and possible overall team attitude would have been significant.

Some random thoughts on this:
1. I wonder how much Dez Bryant's injury had on his thought process
2. Conner's production has to hurt Bell's value, shows Bell's production may be more of a result of the OL and the system rather than his talent.
3. Bell better hope the Jets are willing to pay up, I don't see any other team being dumb enough to make an offer to make this hold out worth while
4. I know the Steelers were only willing to guarantee the first year, but I wonder how much he would have gotten between signing bonus and the first year salary, I suspect it was much more than the 14.5 he would have made under the tag.
5. Finally, The Steeler's ability to Transition tag could screw bell. Free Agency in football is typically about the first few days for the big players. Since the Steelers have a week to match, that could depress his value

Good post. I agree that Conner's production has hurt Bell's value. I've debated on this board about Conner. He is a fine young man and has loads of determination. However, his talent level isn't in the same league as say Barkley, Gurley, Elliot, or other top backs. My opinion is that Conner would not be much of a star if he had to run behind the New York Giant's OL. Bell's stats were certainly helped by the great Steelers' OL. Who knows by how much. Other teams with ordinary OLs are going to wonder how much Bell will help them.
