Matt Lee at Indiana State Tourny

1st round: Matt Lee (38-0) TF in 3:46 (21-6). Matt wrestles Terrell Leavell (28-11) in 2nd round.

Leavell took out the #2 ranked wrestler last weekend and has caught fire late in the season. He's dangerous, but Matt should handle him on his feet and if he doesn't get careless, he should win tomorrow morning. He'll have to win 3 straight tomorrow to take home the state title. The semifinal and final will likely be rematches of earlier wins. A couple of those were 1 pt. squeakers, including one that I posted video of in another thread.

I don't believe I've ever seen young Mr. Lee wrestle, but I'm already a big fan. There are certain intangibles in wrestling that can't be overstated and I suspect that the entire Lee clan has those intangibles that make them valuable team members and fierce competitors. Thanks for the updates on the tourney.

A close match earlier in the year. He got a little sloppy at the end

Matt wins his semifinal in a tight 3-1 match on a takedown with about :05 left in the match. He'll have another rematch tonight under the lights against Alex Mosconi. Lee beat him earlier in the year 10-6 but Mosconi has beaten him before. Should be another close match.

The finals tonight can be streamed free via ihsaa.tv

OK, a little careless/sloppy at the end, but still very nice. Good stance always, good movement, deep gas tank, controls the mat and the match...plenty there to like.

Graves his opponent was extremely defensive. Stayed on his knees as much as possible and tried not to lose. It didn’t work.

Finals should start at 7:30 ET. If you have a free evening, watch a great show. Indiana's State Championship is a single class tournament and the finals are Championship matches only, under the lights at Banker's Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Attendance is typically 12,000+.

There are several nationally ranked wrestlers going tonight.
113 will feature a great freshman Zeke Seltzer vs. defending state champion Jacob Moran (#18 on Intermat).
120 features Matt Lee's teammate Blake Boarman, a sophomore who finished 3rd last year. He faces undefeated Braydel Littell (#18 Intermat) who gave him his only loss on the year.
126 features freshman Jesse Mendez who hasn't been touched all year. He has the look of a 4x State Champ and already beat a defending State Champ in the Semis.
132 2x State Champ Asa Garcia (#16 Intermat) faces Alec Viduya who beat Garcia 2 years ago in the Final to keep Garcia from going for #4 tonight.
- Matt Lee goes at 145 (#17 Intermat)
- Look for Donnell Washington at 160 (#11 Intermat) facing defending State Champ Jordan Slivka
- Others to watch: 170 Nick South (#17 Intermat), 182 Carson Brewer (#14 Intermat) and Nebraska commit Silas Allred (#8 Intermat)

I just have to comment on Jesse Mendez. Mendez is the real deal and very elite Freshman. I’m going to watch him closely on the national scene. It will be interesting to see how great he can be.

He also beat junior 120 pounder #1 Littel who as stated is top 20 ranked nationally.

Resume as freshmen per Track Wrestling

Super32 Champ, 2X Tulsa Champ, 5X USA National Champ, 2X IHPO Champ, 3X IHSWCA Middle School state Champ, 3rd at FloNationals HS division, 3X GFC Champ, 2X Ohio TOC champ.

Matt wrestled well. He's wrestled Mosconi a lot so there is some familiarity between them. Mosconi used to get the better of things, but in the past year or so, the tide turned toward Matt. I have to admit, when he was a freshman, I didn't think he would get this far. I thought maybe by his senior year. But to win it and go undefeated, beating the Kentucky State Champion and some of Michigan's best along the way is just impressive. I'm sure Joe and Nick were watching online tonight and are very proud of little bro.

Matt won 5-2. First time I’ve seen him wrestle. He was up 3-2 late in the third before scoring a late takedown. Similar style to Nick - Matt’s kind of lanky and doesn’t look like the strongest guy out there, but he has a big gas tank and just keeps coming. His demeanor is like Nick’s too — understated but quietly confident.

Personally I think Matt looks a good bit more physically prepared than Nick was at the same time. No idea how they'd stack up as far as preparedness for college, but he's no skinny weakling, looks to have good core strength. I guess we'll see, but Matt appears to have a lot to build on.

You can rewatch at that same link posted above. Great video quality...better than PIAA. Of course the few Indiana pro teams (Pacers & Colts) provide sponsorship $$$. I wonder if the Eagles, Steelers, 76ers, Phillies and Pirates provide $$$ to the PIAA?

Anyway here are some times if you want to skip to Lee stuff in the replay.

Bout: 1:50-2:00
Interview: 2:02-2:04
Medal Podium Presentation: 2:17-2:21
