McHenry

Iowa wasn’t interested, they favored some lower level recruits, that the best lightweight room in the country, will eventually improve, past what McHenry is capable of.;)

Guys: for the 2018-2020 recruiting classes we here at Iowa are only interested in recruits that are ranked 10th or worse nationally in their weight classes and/or 50th or worse overall. As for the reasoning, I have no fricking clue, but that's what I'm seeing so far. If we don't pull our sh*t together quick we'll be competing with Iowa State for the best team in Iowa, and won't even be mentioned nationally. We've got problems and they seem to be that we can't draw future talent to our school. I mean how hard is it to get Brands' son? And of course Cass is a great pick up. But after that we have jack and sh*t. Hopefully we're turning it around, but I'm just not seeing it yet. Spencer, Alex and Kem are a good youth movement, but we're not going to compete with top tier talent at 3 weights. I'm not a PSU fan, but I do admire what Cael and company have done with your program.

the problem with iowa recruiting is that it looks from the outside like they dont have a plan.

and if this kennedy kid goes elsewhere, it will be meltdown on the HR

What about the 3-inch binder. It is too early to just chuck Larry's plan. Unless they msube could get their hands on the Suriano game plan.

The kid is amazing but his size really is a concern. College wrestling exposes mat wrestling problems far more than high school or freestyle. Small in a weight class often means trouble underneath. I have no doubt he is a special talent, but if he was 10 pounds bigger right now I would be more excited.

You are either crazy or uninformed. Have you even followed this kid? 1) he is by far the best lightweight prospect in the nation, bar none. 2) here's a friggin Junior, he's got his senior year a RS, maybe even OTC to put on 10-15 lbs are you kidding me? In 2 years even at 115lbs he will probably be top 4 out of the gate. We might better worry about putting weight on Teasdale, Teske and Busiello to get out of his way if we are so blessed to land him.

I concur. Every year with us it is all about next year or two to three years from now. But then when I look at the future commits I see nothing that substantiates a future filled with wrestling bliss. Hopefully we'll have a surprising finish in Cleveland (3rd would be really really really good), and the likes of Spencer, Kem and Marinelli will draw in new blood, or at the very least motivate a couple kids to give Iowa a try. The fact that PSU can draw in 3 or 4 top tier commits who will be competing for two spots (125, 133), and they'd rather be backups at PSU than starters at Iowa is a huge fricking problem, and if we can't at least solve that piece we're in big trouble for the long haul. We've got to work some magic to start wanting these young studs to be part of the mystic that used to be Iowa Wrestling. In other words, Iowa is going to have to Annex the state of Pennsylvania and close down PSU's wrestling program...a slight attempt at humor as our house of cards is barely holding on and currently contains only about a third of the deck...

My comment was half joke, half not. It just blows my mind that Iowa never contacted Brooks.

And if so, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Like I was telling another PSU fan, the fact that 4 top tier lightweight guys would rather vie for two starting spots (125, 133) at PSU at the risk of never seeing the mat at the NCAAs vice going to Iowa where they have an above average chance of a starting spot for 3-4 years is a problem. Hell, this year you have 3 97 pounders who could beat our guy every time. And going forward it's going to be that way at more than one weight class (thankfully we have Lee) unless we start enticing some of these kids to give Iowa a chance. Of course some Iowa fans want to rage on about how Cael is being unethical, blah, blah, blah, but the reality is that the stud recruits would rather be at PSU, tOSU, Mich, OSU, and even Iowa State (if you look at 2018-2019 commits) than they would Iowa. And we (Iowa) need to fix that...but I just don't see the fix yet. I see a top 3-5 team next year and the same the following year, but after that it really looks murky. In three years I see a couple seniors who could be NCAA champs and 4-5 other poss AAs, but nothing like I'm seeing for PSU and tOSU. And nowhere on the horizon do I see a championship caliber team.

I have only watched him 4 times. Must have been off in those 4 matches. He just lost to a 113 lb. kid. He is lightning quick and seems to have a ton of upside. I think he needs 20 lbs of size. There will be guys like Spencer Lee waiting on him who imo would chew him up from the top position. He won the match at who's number one, but didn't exactly have much offense. I think he looks like an undersized 113 at this point, and we will know soon enough. If he can beat all of these bigger guys why on earth is he losing to a 113?

PSU has done so much damage with bonus points by way of the pin. I don't see this guy as bonus point machine in college. Stud recruit ? You bet. Must have? Not imo. Do you honestly see him putting up Zain of Nolf type team point numbers in the future? I guess I see more of a small Nick Suriano. Busiello is the guy that looks like a bonus point machine to these eyes. He pins people and has mad mat wrestling skills. I would for sure take Adam Busiello over Kurt Mchenry if I could only have one and it isn't even close.

McHenry is the man, you will see! Spencer will be a senior after McHenry's RS year. We are talking he won't be doning blue and white for three more years. I think it is a long shot that we get him, but if we do weight will not be a problem. He will hit the scene pretty much like Yanni has in terms of instant impact at the elite level.

Careful Nashville, you're on the verge of HR heresy!!

Noone on my list is bigger than McHenry.. he is a very special talent and definitely has the potential for a multi year national champ. A must have!!! # 2 on my class of 2019 get list is Starocci. With Busiello in the fold already, it is on to the 2020 class. Our room is bursting at the seams.
Who is this guy "Noone"? No one I know has ever heard of him.

Iowa getting new wrestling facility---this helps
My take on T and T--I think they are trying to make a culture change--A few interviews with Tom this year, the intensity has seemed to lighten up and maybe a little more FUN attitude-- T N T are good coaches--and Iowa has great support from Fans and I believe from the university-- It will come back around--Lee getting a title or 2 is critical--IMO--if not for Zain-Brandon is probably looking at his 3rd next week

PA boys for the most part are hunters--Iowa a great whitetail state--- maybe add that to the binder????

Yes a PSU fan--I want Iowa to be good--helps the sport.

Yes, Zain has certainly damaged BS' chances for a championship these last three years. If I'm not mistaken he's the only person who's beat him at NCAAs in the past three (last year I think BS was the 3 seed and Zain beat him in the semis. BTW, I think Zain is to BS what Nolf is to Kem...just bad luck for us..but Kem still has something to prove as he's only been there once. :)

And yes, I do think TnT are trying to bring the culture around a bit, though and hopefully that will land a higher quantity of top tier talent.

As for the whitetail, I'm from Iowa but my wife and all our family live in the mountains and hollows of WV, so I concur that a few hunting references could perhaps up the recruitment by one or two...LOL!

Can't wait for Thursday so we can get down to business! :)

I know...and I get an occasional beat down from one of the angry ones. But some of those guys just never want to face reality in the face...and never want to accept how bleak our future looks - from a potential NCAA champion position - if we don't get our recruiting in gear. These are not the old days where you could win with a couple finalists and five or six other AAs. If you don't bring your guns loaded for bear you will never reach the peak...at least not for the next 3-4 years...

Any idea if Iowa was going after McHenry?

There was a thread discussing McHenry in HR, and for the most part it appeared, as I read HR posts by those who seem to be the "insiders," that we didn't even pursue him. I didn't see any posts that said words to the effect that we tried to recruit him. It's like he wasn't even part of a discussion (what I derived from the discussion). That being said, I'm not an insider and someone might have some kick-ass master plan that many of us just aren't seeing yet... :)
