Yeah - the eyes don’t lie. I’ve wanted him to be healthy and energetic for a full match since I first saw him because you could see flashes of greatness.

Man, your Buckeyes and my team keep throwing the cards on the table. It could revolve around MyMar/Nickal bouts 7 and 8
I’d love for the National championship to come as down to the wire as possible just seems like it would be great for the sport. If things live up to expectation could this be the best NCAA tournament in history?

I think we agree on lots of things, bud!
Interesting thought though Nevills will crawl back into it and there will be no Coon or Snyder next year. Coon. Is. That. Good.

On the point made, Koll stuffed in Darmstadt and sent Honis up to HWT. So....there’s that.

Nevills will rebound. Thought he was under the weather at the Scuffle. Coon is a multiple champion but for wrestling in the Snyder era. He will play DL in the NFL!

I, too, doubt Cassar has (or ever will have) the size for HWT to be a safe experiment. Not a Joel Edwards II in the making.
Or a Kerry McCoy?

I'm with those who think that Nevills is in a bit of a slump--known to happen; remember QW's sophomore year? Wrestling is such a tough sport, going up against guys that are trying as hard as we are. I think we expect too much of our guys at times! Michael Jordan and LeBron didn't/don't always play at their best (sorry for the b-ball analogy!). I think that all 3 of our guys at 197 are great options, but I would agree that I think that Rasheed has the most bonus point potential for the 3.

I agree that that's usually an issue, but a few examples of smaller heavyweights that I think of shows that they can do well. Blaze Cabell for UNI a couple of years ago was great as a small heavyweight, and weighed no more than 225. Snyder is another, and who could forget Tommy Rowlands, who I've always thought was the best heavyweight that I had seen, and went no more than 230?

As an outside observer - you guys have to go with Rasheed at 197. He looks lightyears better than your other options.. and he would be a high-AA threat in a very weak 197 weight class. Plus bonus points in the early rounds.

I'm not doubting he could put on 20 lbs -- I just don't see him having the frame for that extra 20 to be meaningfully helpful.

Rowlands had really solid legs, and I believe some height. Edwards had height. I'll admit ignorance on Cabel (don't recall his body type), and Snyder . . . well, let's just say he is a freak that cannot really be counted in any comparison.

Couple other small heavy weights from a ways back that pop into my head...Steve Sefter - PSU placed 4th at about 225, and Kurt Angle 2X champ at about 6'even and 220.

I'm 6 foot, 230. Probably 210 when I spoke with Joel Edwards. Joel Edwards is a BIG dude.

Yeah, I lived next door to him for a year while I was in grad school (when he was still a 197). Both buildings had the same landlord, who was super uptight and lamented to me about having wrestlers in one of his houses and the potential for damage. I always chuckled about the thought of Edwards in there putting some of his middleweight housemates through walls during fun nights.

Talk about a size mismatch, Sylvester Terkay was a monster. Massive man, fists about the size of my toaster oven. And jacked. IIRC that year he waylaid the field at nationals, until facing Angle in the finals -- and the next year was like the scorched earth policy reenacted.

Apparently after their NCAA finals, which Angle won by 1 point (as a senior), he told Terkay: I'm glad I'll never have to face you again the rest of my life.

Watching him, I keep waiting for an ankle pick. He just looks like he can get it. He is so quick compared to other 197’s. Beasley looked slow and lumbering compared to him. Can’t wait to see him go against Moore. He can place high at B1Gs and Nationals.

I think Steve Sefter was listed at 220 in the football program. He was probably 205 - 210 during wrestling season. Back then it was 190 and then unl.

Cassar was Jr National Freestyle Champ at 212 ... that was 3 years ago. I would think he could be a solid 230 by next year.

I put the chances of Cassar moving to 285 next year and beating out Nevills at LESS than ZERO.

Rasheed at the Scuffle.
Many have seen these, but for those who want some monster highlights...

Thanks TJ. This was the first time I had seen Shakur wrestle...in a long time. All I can say is DAMN! Boy has he ever improved. He is a BEAST!! And, he is not even a full 197 lber. Amazing!!!:)

Talking about all time great small heavyweights.
Lou Banach probably is the best ever. Wrestling in the unlimited division he he won 2 National titles weighing about 210 pounds.
The one year he pinned 350 pound Tab Thacker in second round of Ncaas and the next year he beat 400 pounds Mitch Shelton in the semis.
Went on to win Olympic Gold medal.
Pretty impressive.
For the younger wrestling fans read about what the Banach brothers overcame to excel in wrestling.

Quite welcome.

Agree lionlover. He's kicked his game up quite a bit. Aggressive and lethal (in a wrestling match sort of way)

Some of his actions remind me of one of Penn State's great ones, Quentin Wright.

He has some great wrestlers in the room to spar with, to learn from and be pressured to improve. Jake Varner and Cael Sanderson would keep a 197 pounder hopping. Then there are his two excellent team members, along with Bo Nickal. That's some major firepower to have focused on developing outstanding techniques and aggressive, push the pace point scoring.

Hadn't seen you post in awhile lionlover. Good to see you back, if you were away. Hope things are going well.

Glad you liked the clips.
