Midlands Day 2

I am not sure how you can think that that there are many on this board that celebrate when Lee loses. A Pa guy who is exciting to watch.....is always respectful and classy..and walks out to Pokémon. What is not to love? Add in that I could ride my bike to to watch Murin wrestle in HS. Just a short ride to see Kaleb Young at Punxsutawney …..and not much farther to see Lee and Kemerer. If you don't like Kemerer or Lee......the problem is you. And Marinelli is just a great story. I...and many others here...root for at least half your team unless they are wrestling PSU. So kindly lose the attitude about the vast majority of the BWI board. Peace

I agree and believe that Spencer has become to dependent on his unstoppable tilt. Take that away and he is not as good as Rivera or Glory.

In a 3 position sport, he got ridden for 4 minutes against Glory and taken down 3 times from neutral against Rivera. Superman has been exposed. Still like the kid's style and attitude though. Easy to root for, even in an Iowa singlet.

Why can't I be happy Spencer Lee lost? Simply put ...I AM!

For one reason. It means the Hodge Race top 4 is likely:

1. Nolf or Nickal
3. Cenzo
4. Hall.

Pretty awesome!

Agree, I can understand why those who follow Pa HS wrestling might hold a soft spot for Pa natives. What I don't quite understand is why we should all have an allegiance to Pa kids on rival teams ... not all PSU fans are Pennsylvanians, and we don't all have the same access to the HS scene.

I'll go along with those who say he's a class act, I assume most wrestlers are until they demonstrate otherwise.

At last year's NCAAs I was a Lee fan in the semis and finals. It had nothing to do with him being from Pa though. For the most part, all I see is a kid wearing an Iowa singlet, nothing about that looks blue and white to me.

I've been watching Lee since he was a 9th grader -- I root for him in most circumstances. Until I see a repeat of Sunday's less-than-stellar effort by him, I have to believe there was something wrong -- illness, injury, something --- that caused Spencer to wrestle below his norm.
OTOH, I always root for Northwestern wrestlers because I helped coach Storniolo when he was a Bantam wrestler - 7 years old or so. I told his mother then that his future was limitless, and apparently I was right.

If Spencer Lee is the wrestler most of us think he is, he'll bounce back from this as strong as ever. But darn, Rivera looks good too.

Can you give a synopsis please?

Found this:

“After the awards ceremony, Lee deposited his second-place medal into a nearby garbage can underneath the Sears Centre. His teammates and coaches quickly retrieved it, but it was clear that Lee wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.”

Nothing too crazy, just said, "we owned him on the feet" in between lots of this was much better, claps and saying cool down this isn't the end goal.

How long can mono last? Google isn't a friend of mine so I have to ask you guys.TIA.

I think on average the symptoms last about a month. The initial two weeks are hell though, at least mine were. Your throat is really sore and you can't eat any solid food. The fatigue part can linger for quite a bit longer for some unlucky ones, months and even beyond a year. I was 21 at the time and felt 100% after about 6 weeks.

It depends on how quickly it gets diagnosed and treated. The doctor at my college infirmary failed to diagnose mine for about a month and it got really bad. One day a sub doctor was covering the infirmary. He took one look at me and said (I kid not) "Oh my God! You either have mono or hepatitis; I don't know which." When my bloodwork came back, it turned out my mono had been untreated for so long, I developed non-infectuous hepatitis as a complication.

My recovery (after I got better enough to be released from care) lasted over a month, almost two. I got cleared for wrestling in January and had no intention to wrestle in matches, but the guy wrestling my weight class got injured and we would have forfeited the weight. Probably not my best idea to cut 10 pounds and wrestle in the last tri match of the year.

When I had mono in college, there is no way I could've wrestled a month later. I was too weak and unable to focus.

I spent a week bedridden at home, unable to stay awake for 20 minutes. I know this because it took me a full day of off-and-on watching the endless CNN Headline News loop before I finally saw Headline Sports.

About a month after I first started showing symptoms (and 3 weeks after the diagnosis and medication), I took a make-up exam in a professor's office, pre-scheduled during his office hours. I bombed the test. I wasn't quite right physically, but I the real problem was that I still couldn't concentrate -- and him showing up an hour late didn't help.

Maybe after 6-8 weeks I would've been OK to wrestle, but not after 1 month. And I'm not talking about competing at a major event, merely going to practice and leaving under my own power.

As we were preparing for the last football game my senior year in high school (1966) I started feeling really fatigued but wasn't going to miss that game no matter what. Played, but it was a big mistake as I was a shadow of myself and then spent 6 weeks mostly in bed recovering from Mono. Afterward I was told that I was left with the
Epstein-Barr virus for the rest of my life. Mostly dormant but would flare up if I got run down. Years later I was told that I probably had EBV prior to, and probably the cause of, the Mono.

I quit the team my Junior year to get married. The next December the kid at my normal weight class was getting his butt kicked every match. I went to the coach and said, "I'm coming back out.I'm 12 pounds over but will start working with my high school team and should be down to weight by the middle of January". I went home, went to one practice, then went to bed with the Hong Kong Flu. Two weeks later I got out of bed, drove back to campus, weighed myself and saw I had lost 14 pounds. It was the most I had been underweight in 8 years. I went to the coach and said, "Guess what, I'm on weight!". He said, "Good, cause you're wrestling tonight."

And?

I went back and read the thread again. My comments did come off as pretty whiny. I was probably so frustrated with Spencer losing that I got too defensive. The hard part is he is the one guy us Hawk fans expect to dominate every time out and when he got beat it was shocking. I gotta admit, it’s tough knowing we still have a ways to go to catch Penn St. I apologize to anyone offended. Here’s to hoping for an exciting Big 10 season and hopefully a lot of Iowa vs PSU matchups at the Big 10 Tourney. Happy New Year!

no worries... fans have a hard time understanding that it is hard to win every match let alone dominate every one. That is why some of these PSU kids recently are really amazing... DT, Ed, Zain and now Nolf, Bo...... Look at the scrutiny Hall gets when he has a close match.

I didn't think so. But very nice comment. I think there are a LOT of PSU fans who were shocked as well. I finally saw the match earlier today and I thought he didn't look well. Taking nothing away from Rivera -- he was definitely sharp. It should be a very exciting match next time around.

Self-awareness and ability to admit a mistake...that’s two strikes against you.;)

I don’t think Rivera could wrestle any better than he did against Lee. That kind of quickness is difficult to defend against (see RBY). Good chance they meet 3 more times. My guess - Spencer wins two of them.

Marinelli wrestled smart. Good game plan against Wick. I thought Lugo and Young had pretty good tournaments, too.

Looking forward to tomorrow! Can’t wait to see Teasdale and Teske. Nolf and Nickal, too. Want to catch as many of their matches as possible - more than a little bittersweet as they approach the last few months of their collegiate careers. Wish Lewis was going to be there. Like to see Joseph wrestle him. Lewis wrestles a little like White, who is, IMO, one of the bigger challenges Joseph faces in his quest to become a 3-timer.
