Midlands Day 2

Another reminder that it helps if you include final scores of matches during a discussion.

For those that didn't watch, here are the scores from the championship bouts:

133: Austin DeSanto (IA) MAJ Noah Gonser (Campbell), 15-5
141: Josh Alber (No. IA) DEC Max Murin (IA), 5-2
149: Matt Kolodzik (Princeton) DEC Max Thomsen (No. IA), 3-1
157: Ryan Deakin (NW) DEC Kaleb Young (IA), 6-2
165: Alex Marinelli (IA) DEC Evan Wick (Wisc.), 4-3
174: Zahid Valencia (ASU) MAJ Taylor Lujan (No. IA), 17-7
184: Drew Foster (No. IA) DEC Cash Wilcke (IA), 3-2
197: Pat Brucki (Princeton) MAJ Tanner Sloan (Unattached), 13-4
285: Tanner Hall (Unattached) DEC Conan Jennings (NW), 4-3

I honestly don't think many here are happy that Lee lost. Pennsylvania legend, nice kid, fun to watch, easy to root for. There's excitement here, sure, as there always is when a top guy goes down.

But I do think more than a few people here might be happy about the now-expected drop in instances of Iowa fans badgering Flo about Lee's p4p ranking.

But really, to the extent some PSU fans are enjoying any Iowa loss (contrasted with Lee in particular losing), sure that's happening too, but *that's just how sports fandom works* and your pretending as if it's out of line or even a surprise is less than fully genuine. I mean, if, say, Cenzo goes down in the Scuffle finals, you're going to be virtual touchdown-dancing with all of HR, and that's fine because that's what happens when your rival's top-ranked guys go down. It's all baked into the sports-fandom pie. It's why you're here right now getting into arguments with strangers.

Thanks tikk, you said it a heckuva lot better than me.

Everything wrong with Hawkeye wrestling in one short clip. After what Gunning's dad pulled, that's how Stoll's coach talks to a referee?
Yeah, some seem to find that incident (the YOU SUCK outburst) humorous, but it's a bad look for Iowa and Brands, IMO. The leader of any program should have more composure than that. One can argue and defend his athletes without being a flaming DB.

It's a head coach behaving like a petulant child. No wonder they're falling lower and lower on the totem pole of wrestling. Iowa fans shouldn't tolerate it.

Not to mention that the 3 stall calls were perfectly legit. Marinelli had a great first period then just watched the clock for 2 periods. Anyone watching the match should have been expecting those calls given the inactivity.

Maybe the referee's dad will ask Brands to meet him in the parking lot.

I’m fine. I don’t overreact to December performances. You guys don’t need to worry. If you stay healthy you win in March going away. I just don’t understand why it makes some on here so happy every time an Iowa guy loses. Cheer for your guys. They are dominant right now. That should be good enough
Don't understand?
HR had a thread titled The Enigma Goes Down when Gulibon lost.
They have threads for PSU guys that won, but they think lost-Bo pinned himself while decking Sammy.

A minority certainly. I think most of the responses were simply surprise as most have been expecting Spencer to run away with it. Very few of the responses were what one would call gloating. That said, I agree with everything else you said. People forget how long we've waited for this -- and never expected it.

To add to this, and echo what Tikk10 said above, I think your indictment of PSU fans misses the mark fairly widely here @jmadden1998. You've been around long enough to know lots of us are huge Spencer Lee fans and would be happy to see him be the next 4x'er (after Cenzo, of course). The little digs that are getting under your (too thin) skin at the moment seem to be directed at the unrealistic and sometime belligerent hawk fans on HR that frequently misprognosticate Iowa's chances, room strength, coaching strength, etc, etc, etc. HR's wounds are largely self-inflicted.

I think you get more excited when Iowa loses than when PSU wins. Seems odd

Madden let’s be honest for a second that in sports you never want to see your rival win. At the same time i respect lee and I’m always looking for a good wrestling match and that was a good match that will have an even better ones in the future. This has the making of a great rivalary. Also a lot of people were just poking fun at HR. At the end of the day wrestling isn’t like college football. 1 loss doesn’t mean shit except in maybe the hodge rankings. It’s a long season that comes down to 3 days in march.

That is part of why it is funny. Cael would never lose control like that.

The juxtaposition of posts 183 and 184 on page 5 ...

It's like the trick shot that accidentally goes in but you could never make if you tried.

Interesting and surprising result for sure, but I’ll still take Lee at nationals. He’s a great wrestler, but just didn’t look like himself today.
I hear Coe College is going to pay Larry to spend some time learning at State College. While Larry is in town, rumor is Spencer will be staying with his dad and helping his dad by studying with Cael, Cody, Casey and Jake in the PSU wrestling room. Spencer should be ready by March.

It is the HR ridiculous bitterness and silly and limited wrestling assessment skills that makes making fun so enjoyable.

Spencer is must see TV...outside of PSU guys, there’s nobody in the field that I want to watch more! What he did in the first period against Glory is kinda nuts...after that, he was just plain different. Perhaps adrenaline dump or something that he just couldn’t shake even in the finals, but he didn’t have his same stuff after that period.

That being said, Rivera looked insanely good on his feet tonight! Quick, well timed, and darn near perfectly executed finishes. I’d put my money on Lee in a rematch (against anyone really), but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rivera keep things interesting in future match ups.

Everybody will bet on Spencer next time around. However, both Glory and Rivera came to do battle with a plan to attack areas Spencer is vulnerable. There will need to be adjustments made by Spencer and the Hawk staff to take those vulnerabilities away. Spencer will be uncomfortable accepting the idea of hand fight for a stall call style.
Rivera is going to be tough for Spencer to adjust to. At least I think so.

I am not sure how you can think that that there are many on this board that celebrate when Lee loses. A Pa guy who is exciting to watch.....is always respectful and classy..and walks out to Pokémon. What is not to love? Add in that I could ride my bike to to watch Murin wrestle in HS. Just a short ride to see Kaleb Young at Punxsutawney …..and not much farther to see Lee and Kemerer. If you don't like Kemerer or Lee......the problem is you. And Marinelli is just a great story. I...and many others here...root for at least half your team unless they are wrestling PSU. So kindly lose the attitude about the vast majority of the BWI board. Peace

I don't think you are handling this too bad. A few guys here just ribbing you a little bit.
Not sure where you live, but I'm in Cedar Rapids. Spencer Lee to the Hawkeye fans I know, is a hero. Whether intentional or not, he has become the savior of Iowa wrestling. I can't imagine the amount of pressure he's under.
That was a big deal around here and everywhere else.... you don't think so? Spencer has his own sticky on HR!
I'd still put money on him in March, and I really like watching him wrestle, but the greatest lightweight room in the country (we hear that a bunch) got knocked down a peg tonight.

That is part of why it is funny. Cael would never lose control like that.

Never seen it at a Penn State event but Cael did get launched from a freestyle event for the "chair incedent". These are alpha males in the ultimate alpha Male sport, things get heated. That said , Brands goes over the top , a lot. I generally find it amusing. He's a character.

Good post, but I wouldn’t open my curtains to watch Murin wrestle in my backyard, let alone ride a bike to see it.

Lee needs something else on his feet for when people decide to quit giving him the handle. Rivera is so much quicker than Lee it seems to me like Lee will continue to have problems in this match up. I remember when mcbono first lost to Delgado and this feels very much the same. I won't be at all surprised if Glory passes Lee by next year as well. Spencer Lee is an amazing wrestler. He has the best tilt I've ever seen and is strong as a bull, but he doesn't have much in the way of quickness and it isn't a reach to think a couple guys will figure out his tilt. Time will tell. 2 time champ 3x finalist 4 time AA. Not too shabby.

I agree and believe that Spencer has become to dependent on his unstoppable tilt. Take that away and he is not as good as Rivera or Glory.
