Music During Matches?

Weird Al Madonna GIF by The Roku Channel

Did they just start with the music during matches today? I found it horribly distracting. Hope it doesn't stick.

Now Get off my lawn.
Actually, if it was a notch lower, I'd be okay with it. It would avoid the long periods of dead quiet during matches.

I saw a post on Facebook that the PSU wrestlers witnessed Oregon State doing it in Corvallis, they liked it, and now they want to start doing it back in State College. Not sure how true that is, but it may be the new norm.

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't even know about the music until I saw this thread. I guess I was too busy watching wrestling. Get rid of the cheerleaders, though. They add nothing to the experience.

This thread is hilarious! Weeks ago I bemoaned the presence of the Mic Man and the cheerleaders, and got roundly lambasted. Now, it looks like a few more are in the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it“ category.

The reality is, every sport and every arena have their own personality and rhythm. Rec Hall has done just fine for a long time just being what it is. Countless Penn State wrestlers have talked about how great it is to wrestle here and that was before we had cheerleaders or somebody asking us if we are ready for Penn State wrestling.

I love Penn State football, I love Penn State wrestling, I love Penn State, basketball, gymnastics, and volleyball. They are all different, and there is no need to make them seem to be the same for the fans.

But ya can’t tone down he chair throwing.
i can't wait till they play some tone loc or some young Mc to see pawrestler hop out on the mat

While in college, I scouted the Temple/West Chester dual, since we had Temple coming up on our schedule and they had a star at my weight (he ended up as NC).
Back then, both Temple and West Chester were competitive and somewhat bigtime programs. Now they don't even have wrestling - or they only have club wrestling.
College wrestling meets back then were somewhat informal, at least ours were. My coach (something of an idiot), didn't want us to warm up on the mat in the fieldhouse. So we warmed up in the wrestling room then strolled onto the mat and wrestled. Boring.

This was mid-60s at West Chester State Teacher's College (now WCU). Imagine my surprise when the fieldhouse went black. Martial music began playing. Spotlights led the team as they ran onto the mat to warm up. And the fieldhouse exploded with lots of spotlights going everywhere. It was cool. The crowd was in to it.
The Temple kid at my weight (a VA state champ) beat WC's kid who I knew from Lower Dauphin. But I don't remember who won the dual! Weird.
Just as an aside, I bumped into Carl Schnellenback at that dual - after they turned the lights on. Carl was Ridley's coach from 1959 till eternity. But he could never beat my team while my coach (Dick Shoemaker) was there. Carl told me that night that Ridley was going to beat us this year. I just laughed at him. We kicked their butts. (Both Carl and Dick are in the HOF)

It did not bother me at all, at first I thought it was coming from another part of the building.

It depends on the arena. If it's a sold out madhouse, the crowd noise is a great part of the experience. Music selected by the wrestlers leading them onto the mat? Great! Any music playing during the match would only be listened to if the match was really boring. Music during the bout is a minor distraction. Otherwise the crowd noise pushes the wrestlers along, maybe (When I was out there, I never heard the crowd).
In an empty gym? Blast away.

Most here wouldn’t know of the music if they didn’t read of it. You crusty old curmudgeons can’t hear that well.

If we couldn't hear it then couldn't hear it.

That's my impeccable logic for the day.

My friend who listens to JB on line calls me 2-3 times per season and complains how.stupid the WE ARE chant makes the Rec Hall crowd seem.
It's usually the kids at the match just having fun with it. Now if the response after " Thank you " was " Get off my lawn ", maybe it would stop. He who wants to break a kid's heart, cast the first bad response! :)
