Names coming off jerseys

well, the non-psu announcers are most displeased. they have a hard enough time up there without butchering the names, too. let's all take a moment and feel deeply for them. poor bastards.

Alright, I guess I'm over my initial reaction to the names coming off. I'll just have to keep a copy of the roster with me to memorize who the new guys are. Respect the tradition.

However, a team like Boston College needs to have names! It's annoying when teams with no history do it as a team building gimmick...much like the Pittsburgh Pirates did in the late 90's (who the hell knew any of our players outside of the area?). Then my friend said Pitt did it for a few games when Paul Chryst took over and they lost to Youngstown State and Cincinnati so he surrendered and put the names back on.

I like both moves, honoring the guys who stayed, then getting back to the team first mentality. Some traditions are there for a reason...

just saw this from Twitter. New boss is going all in on tradition apparently.

@nittanyrich: #PennState announces names will not be on football jerseys beginning this season.

Fantastic! One step further to being back where we belong. Now all we have to do is bring the statue back, and win a national championship!

This was never the real reason. It was dictated by Joyner and some on the old guard BOT. This was merely how they had to spin it after Bill had said he wasn't going to change the uniforms. The fact that they didn't take the names off last year has Joyner's footprint all over this. I believe Tom, without giving specifics, indicated that the decision to put names on the jerseys came from above.

One of the great points made by Franklin yesterday was that taking the names off is part of the healing process. I think his point was that we as a Penn State community must embrace our football tradition, not run from it. What that means to me is that we should not allow the false narrative, and those who continue to try to push it forward, shame us into abandoning what we know in our hearts to be good and true.

I think CJF should start a new tradition - put the players first name on the front of the jersey.
That would be funny. They could use the oval emblem with the stitched script name inside like some auto mechanics wear.

I for one will miss the names on the jerseys .Liked the idea but what ever more important things to worry about like winning

Not to sound like a stodgy old man (but I am going to)...can we get back to the tradition of the players wearing suits and ties for road trips? After all, they represent the University wherever they go.

OK - now all of you - get off my lawn!

Absolutely agree on the suits and ties. Also agree with "Get off my lawn". It's fun for me to be old and crotchety.

Nike paid a lot of money to make sure they wear those track suits

Why not go back to the lighter blue? That never seems to come up. Penn State's official colors are a dark royal blue (PMS 287) & white.not dark navy (PMS 282) that the Ath dept has been using since the 70s.

I often wonder about that. Seeing how for 99% of the trip to and from a game, is spent in a bus or airplane, with no one from outside the team there, why put on a suit and tie? Why not be comfortable?? If they all look the same, (same sweat suit etc) and it says PSU on it, I am okay with that look. There's nothing worse than a fat man having to wear a tie!!!

I actually prefer the navy blue to the royal one, but I do think it brings up a good point that the school/team should have a consistent shade of blue and stick with it. It's odd that different official PSU items have completely different color blues.

Having seen the team travel with suits and ties, and then with track suits....I think they represent the University better with suits and ties.

I realize it's not a big deal, but I think it makes for a better presentation of the program, the individual and the University.

I think we can both agree that no camouflage outfits be worn when travelling as a team.
