Names coming off jerseys

just saw this from Twitter. New boss is going all in on tradition apparently.

@nittanyrich: #PennState announces names will not be on football jerseys beginning this season.

Let's do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand why OB did it.
I had no problem with it then I have no problem with it now.
It was reaaaalllllyyyyy low on my list of things to worry or complain about with the team. LOL.
Yeah, me too. I would have prefered that they'd kept the names on the jerseys but it's not a big deal to me.

Throwback unis. I want to see throwback unis.

I think Franklin's comment about 2012 team is very fitting. That said, I sm all for the change. We Are

Was it OB or Joyner? I sense Joyner put the names on just as he retired #22

Oh I did not know that. I thought it was something OB and Mauti and Zordich kind of came up with.
If it was that SOB Joyner then put me in the "yes I'm glad the names are coming off" camp.

Outstanding!

Can we also drop the Nike logo and go further retro with a Russell Athletic logo on the jersey tail?

This was the biggest mountain ever made out of a mole hill. No matter how you slice it, it's just fashion.

My opinion has always been that if Nike can write a check and have their logo plastered over the player's heart, then the players who actually bust their ass to make the team certainly deserved to have their name on the back.

It's up to the coach to pick the uni. A good part of me would LOVE to see the coach to make a significant change to the uniform just to watch the meltdown.

On a side note, the whole "125+ years of no names" makes as much sense as Luxembourg touting 200 years of no space program or the Amish claiming over 300 years of no cars.

This is great. For the first time in years, I've actually felt that tinge in my heart reading both Franklin and Mangiro's statements this morning. It's the same tinge I used to feel watching the Penn State "Gladiator" pump up video. The Joe Pa "Look Around" video. That tinge.

For those of us like that, this means more than just some stupid uniform change. It means a whole lot more.

I'm with you Sharkie. To me it means a whole lot more. CJF has done just about everything right since he got here and this just shows he really gets it. It was never about the individual players and it's a great reminder that some basic truths always remain. I won't go on and on like I usually do--I'll just say football is a team sport, Joe understood that, CJF understands that and is carrying on our core traditional values. Every other team is going in the other direction--if you really want to be different you don't go with the flow.

I love this coach and I'm very excited about the seasons ahead!

So you're saying Luxembourg had a space program 200 years ago but abandoned it?? And up until 300 years ago the Amish drove cars?? I'm always amazed at how much I learn on this message board.

I'm fine either way. If I had a vote, I probably would have voted to keep the names. But, now, after reading CJF's statement, I'm all in on tradition.

It's not just fashion. Not that there is anything wrong with folks who are fashionistas. Fashionistas are FABULOUS !!!!

Did you have your left hand raised to your shoulder, palm pointed upward, as you posted that fashion note?

O'Brien was clear about not changing the jerseys/adding names and then did an about face soon before the season. I don't think it's a stretch to suggest he was "put in his place" and told what to do by Joyner. O'Brien just was a good soldier about it.

I doubt it mattered that much to O'Brien either way, but I'm confident the decision came from Joyner and the BoTs.

Bragging about being different for 125+ years as a symbol that we're different, and somehow sanctimoniously better, makes no sense when NO ONE had names on their jerseys 125 years ago. It's like my mother bragging about not having a cell phone for 70 years.

Damn it! Now I have to go back to buying a program again!!!
The few times I have bought a program the teams looses. So I will just have to commit the names to memory and you know, just forget to do some of my job to free up that brain storage space. heh

Take some of what Mangiro said and make it a placard in the tunnel and in the weight rooms. Bravo Angelo!

NO to alternate uniforms!

Remember when CJF when newly hired joked about how serious some people are about uniforms? He's right. A lot of replies so far.

Now if only Rivals would make things right and go back to the former message board style. You beat me to it Fac!

Ehhhh, I don't think anyone is saying anything like that.
Some liked the tradition of it and right now in College Football there are very few teams with their names on the backs.
And even if you choose not to believe it, it did set us apart from many other programs. Not that it made us better just "different".
Take a look sometime at the schools with the most memorable and recognizable Uniforms....there's a reason for that.
