National Duals next season

OKLAHOMA CITY – The National Duals Invitational, sponsored by Paycom, will welcome some of the top collegiate wrestling talent to BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the weekend of Nov. 15-16.

“Hosting the National Duals Invitational by our fantastic sponsor, Paycom, is a game-changer for D1 wrestling. Due to the unprecedented challenges in NCAA Division I athletics today, it is more imperative than ever to have more big moments in intercollegiate wrestling so we can substantially grow our fan base and viewership,” said Mike Moyer, Executive Director, National Wrestling Coaches Association.

The premiere 16-team event will feature some of the top NCAA Division I teams, with a total purse of more than $1 million up for grabs. The top 8 teams will all earn payouts, with the winning squad walking away with $200,000. The second- and third-place teams will earn $150,000, while fourth place earns $75,000. Fifth through eighth place will each earn between $50,000 and $20,000, respectively. All participating teams will receive $20,000 for attending.

Ticket details and the full roster of teams competing will be announced on or before July 15.

“I am excited for the sport of wrestling to have a competitive field at the inaugural National Duals Invitational,” said Chad Richison, Paycom’s founder and CEO. “Investing in student athletes and non-income-generating sports is important in today’s ever-evolving collegiate landscape.”

Thirty-four-time NCAA champion Oklahoma State will serve as the host school.

“Bringing a prestigious wrestling tournament of this magnitude to Oklahoma is exciting for the sport, and the winnings will be significant in helping universities build out their programs at an even higher level. We continue to be grateful for Mr. Richison and Paycom’s support of wrestling in the state of Oklahoma and nationally,” said Chad Weiberg, Oklahoma State Vice President and Athletic Director.

This event will be held at the BOK Center, which was also the site of the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships and is the current home of the 2025 Big 12 Championships.

“We’re excited to host the inaugural National Duals Invitational at BOK Center, and we’re proud that our venue has become a top choice for major wrestling events,” said BOK Center Vice President Keller Taylor. “This event offers the perfect stage for top-tier competition, and we can’t wait to welcome thousands of passionate supporters. BOK Center is ready to deliver an unforgettable experience filled with the energy, intensity and excitement that only live wrestling can bring.”

Paycom, a leading provider of comprehensive, cloud-based human capital management software, has been a long-time supporter of collegiate and professional athletics in Oklahoma and beyond.

Unless my math skills have degenerated, that's roughly the revenue raised by one home match at Rec Hall with a lot more expenses to take the show on the road.
Was thinking along the same lines. Amounts to paying some travel expenses to hopefully entice some better teams to show up.

I don't know the numbers, but does PSU wrestling turn a profit every year? I always assumed all wrestling programs, lost money or best case broke even

Apparently Cael has said hard no to this. Wish he would come to the table at least to get it done. I understand not wanting to "help" okstate by attending in Tulsa. But as the big dog, he can negotiate to get this done (rotating venues, bigger prize pool, etc)

It ain't national duals without you guys.

edit: to add: no Iowa either.
Event should be scrapped if you don't have both.

You think Iowa goes?

Interesting that you took this away. I was reading (and assuming since NIL is a factor now) that the members of the team split the $200k
Think this is likely the case. But even so I don’t see it being enough to really entice guys.

FWIW (very little!) here’s my view on the situation.

Would I like to see Penn State go and roll up the rest of the country in November? Yeah that’s fun! But the money isn’t worth it for the program and they’re never gonna do something that isn’t specifically best for PSU.

Is it fair to take umbrage with that? Sure. But that’s the way it’s gonna continue to be. Unless the NCAA (or whatever is left in charge in 5 years) mandates attending a dual tournament to win an actual championship, they’re just never going to go.

Had a feeling this announcement was coming, Cael yesterday said "Someone in Oklahoma is willing to host" Had Paycom sponsorship written all over it.

He also basically said "Have fun without me"

No. Put it on, make it an event. Reluctant participants would be more willing to participate if it eventually morphs into a must wrestling event.

A big duals tournament in mid-November and then CKLV about 3 weeks later in early December. The national duals will result in both events being diminished because most teams will not participate in both.

Who pays for our travel and stay? Zero to gain from Penn State going. We don’t need to prove again that we have the best team. Beating the crap out of your wrestlers before you have to is not what Cael does.
When the football team earns millions of dollars in the playoffs, I'm sure the travel and other expenses are taken off the top but where does the rest of that money go? Does it go to the athletic budget or into the football program. Whatever the answers to those questions I would think that the exact same thing would happen with the $200,000. Is there any evidence that money earned would go to NIL and the wrestlers?

I do not.

If I had to guess off the top of my head:

OKST
UNI
NCST
VT
Ohio State
ASU
Rutgers
Mizzou

Those are the ones that sort of jump out at me right away
I’d possibly add the following as well:

Michigan
Minnesota
Nebraska
Cornell
Iowa St
UNC

Russia, Iran and Japan all want to come. They said they will agree to folkstyle rules.

So.... National Duals. What are the criteria to make it? If there are no criteria is it just an Invitational tournament? Who selects the field?
