NCAA Session 4 Thread ...

Decent Session 4 performance. So much for the low probability of going 5 for 5 in semi-final matches. Sweet.

PSU freshmen that have reached the finals at NCAAs?

I don't know the answer to that. Off the top of my head, there's:

Nolf
Nickal
DT
Nico
Kolat

Am I missing any?
maybe greg elinski he reached the finals a couple times. i can't remember if he did freshman year.

You don't have to deflect from his point, AZChief. You're a very knowledgeable wrestling fan. Your man won the match fair and square, but you know that wasn't a pin.

Thought the point was that we won't be able to bitch about a call...Brooks had Abounder on his back, about to pin him and the ref blew the whistle to inexplicably stop it and was wrong. Quick falls happen...Remember this one?

That evens out the Gilman pin that should never have been called. So it's a wash for you guys.

Quick pins do happen and that wasn't a pin against Kilmara just like Gilman didn't pin NATO. Gilman beat NATO. He was better and there's no doubt. That still wasn't a pin, though. You can't tell me with a straight face both his blades were on the mat.

Close, but not as a freshman. He finished 7th as a freshman, made it the finals as a soph and junior (finishing 2nd each time), and then missed the finals as a senior when he finished 3rd.

The way I read it, one win tomorrow night cinches it.
I think a certain combination of Okie St. and VA Tech losses in the consis would do it too. PSU has 114 points. Okie St. can only score a max of 120 and VA Tech 120.5. Also, a Conaway would factor in too.

Wondering if the finals might start at 165, to save the imar-nolf match for last?

Not likely imho.

Gwiz with 84 straight wins vs the World Champ Snyder is the headline match.

Nolf vs IMar is very very worthy. Just don't think they will change given the HWT battle everyone wants to see.

HWT will be a great Finals Match for the Final Match, imho.

Excellent night. Couldn't have gone any better. Can't wait for tomorrow. Would love nothing better than 5 golds and a bronze. Probable? No. But these kids seem to step up every time they on the mat

Good session comments guys.

Sleep well and let's bring it all home tomorrow!

Nah...some refs just call it quick like in Nico's match above. And that was in a defensive like pin position and they normally ever call it that quick.

Just rewatched it...both blades were down but it was quick right before he pushed up...a touch fall. Plus they started counting late...Gilman had control and NATO was scooching on his shoulder blades.

per Flo, the magic number is "6." If PSU scores 6 points, or Okla. St. and VT not score 6 of the maximum left in their matches, then the title is PSU's.

You can read their statement about this at THIS LINK.

It will be done in the morning.
Agree. Here are the morning sessions involving VTECH and OSU

OSU has 4 in the consolations, and are favored (by seed) in 1 of the 4
VTECH has 6 in the consolations, and are favored (by seed) in 3 of the 6

There is one cross match at Heavyweight, so one will not have any points there

Also, if Conway can grab points, it is certainly wrapped up before the evening session starts.

141: 4 Ashnault (RUT) v. 7 Chisko (VTECH)

149: 11 Collica (OSU) v. 10 DePalma (KENT)

157: 15 Walsh (RID) v. 8 Brascetta (VTECH)

157: 6 Smith (OSU) v. 2 Gantt (NCSTATE)

165: 3 Jordon (tOSU) v. 14 McFadden (VTECH)

174: 31 Weatherspoon (ISU) v. 8 Epperly (VTECH)

184: 14 Miklus ( MISSOURI) v. 8 Boyd (OSU)

197: 3 Pfarr (MN) v. 6 Haught (VTECH)

HWT: 3 Waltz (VTECH) v. 4 Marsden (OSU)

If the PSWC site is fully updated -- and it looks like it is -- Flo is wrong, magic number is 7.0:
PSU 114.0
Pokes 79.5, max 120.0
VT 69.5, max 120.5

Was looking at the same thing.

7 it is.

VT and Ok St will likely eliminate themselves before the finals.

That would be sweet. If that happens, they'll need to light the Empire State Building in Blue and White :)

I thought it was win by pin not major. So even if they win by decision it knocks 2 points of the magic number of 7.

They're going to have to do something about these challenges, in the rules committee. There are too many coaches trying to game the rules, for nothing more than a lunger timeout and you had Perry at Big10, trying to challenge the stall call against IMar, when it was very obvious what he was attempting to do and you have refs that are dumb enough to fall for it.

They should borrow from the NFL. If you ask for a review and your reason for asking is ruled wrong, your wrestler gets a stall call. It counts the same as any other stall call, warning, 1, 1, 2, DQ. That would put a stop to any coaches trying to slow down the match.

Correct. they have a maximum of six matches, and they need a combination of ALL wins and tech falls, majors and pins.

Collica and Marsden do nothing but stall, so It's gotta be a foreign language to them to actually go out and try to win by tech fall or major, haha.

Jojo, I like, aggressive style, has the guts to wrestle you, as evidenced by how he tried to wreslte Jason instead of stall like Collica and Marsden.
