I've probably told this before ...
The PSU Alumni Association held an Orange Bowl party at some bar in Old Pasadena. The 5 of us got turned away because of fire code capacity lol, we could see the back wall from the door. Whatever, we found a Skeller-ish dive bar a block away.
During the game, some chatty local guy starts talking with us. After a while he says "I like you guys but I really LOVE Notre Dame." And then he would not shut up about Notre Dame for the rest of the game.
We left when Nebraska scored to take the lead. There was time for Miami to win but they had collapsed and we couldn't take ND Boy any longer. Or as my brother said: we need to go now, before I stick a bar stool up his ass.
Not sure if I've shared this here, but since we're telling Nebby stories...
Like many of you, I grew up hating the huskers. Was an 11yo at the '82 game and marveled at the night lights that had been wheeled in and at our TE who was missing a finger and whose name sounded a lot like my hometown's only wrestling state champ, Kurt Bowman (Kirk Bowman).
So, 2003 comes around and I'd built enough of a career to afford some football road trips (had gone to Lansing in '97 to watch Sedrick Irvin AND Marc Renaud each dust us for over 200yds, and to the Orange Bowl in '99 when Chafie saved the day against Miami). My buddy & I went out and were absolutely floored by the midwestern niceties we found in the Husker fans. Rolled into a sea of red bar in our blue & whites pregame and met two older women who were big fans and whose husbands were inexplicably not football fans. They were so kind, walked us right to our gates, just caricatures of friendliness in so many ways.
The game was sucky and full of mistakes by both teams, but I loved the stadium. There was a PSU heckler in our section who was gifted with a loud voice, but even reactions to him were jolly & chuckly. At one point in Q3 during a crowd lull, he yelled: THIS IS A GAME dot dot dot, and we all grinned like wtf is he gonna say now, and he finished with BETWEEN TWO NOT VERY GOOD TEAMS, and the whole section lawled. Their friendliness even softened a hardened troll!
The other big takeaway was the hotness levels of the coeds, just wowin us everywhere we looked. So we had a good & boozy time at the game despite the on-field product, and when we got out, we needed a ride back to our hotel so of course we hitched one! These folks were actually Penn Staters, and just said hop in. So we're in deep stadium exit traffic, but everyone's jolly, and we end up stopped at an intersection where a couple coed pedestrians were standing & talking to each other. Smokin hotties. My beer courage prompted me to lean out the window, smile at them and say oh you guys look like good friends; go on & give her a kiss? with a raised eyebrow. They smiled, looked at each other and dove tf in! Our whole SUV erupted with cheers, as did a bunch of passersby.
Needless to say, that day, my Husker h8 turned right around. Go Big Red!
