Who wins?

Not knowledgeable enough to take a stab at it myself, but just curious to know what others think.

Roar Lions Roar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a matchup of strengths vs weaknesses. Lee is much better on their feet, Cortez much better on the mat. I'd take Lee but would be pretty interested to see it.

I don't know. Nick's performance at the Open was dreadful. And at Edinboro he got smoked by Synon. Been awhile since we've seen the guy who demolished Sasso and beat Waters. The NLWC year sounds good in theory, but seems a lot for a kid to handle. I mean, Ben Freeman absolutely torched Lee and he was in the same weight that Nick won in Fargo last July.

Who wins?

I don't know the answer to your question.

That said, I'll share a few nuggets I've been saving since April. After the Blue-White game, I went down on to the field, and ended up bumping into a lower weight PSU wrestler there. We chatted for a bit, and here are a few things he told me that I thought you guys would find interesting:

- Cortez got injured in November. The wrestler I spoke with indicated that in warmups before the Keystone Classic, Cortez didn't want to do several normal warmups because they caused him too much discomfort. Those of us that were in the stands that day were surprised by Cortez's performance, but we were unaware of his condition

- this wrestler also indicated that Nick Lee is a beast on top. He said that from the top at practice, Nick would routinely cause pain for those he was wrestling. He said Nick was constantly apologizing about it, but that his skill set was so strong from the top that this scenario happened all the time. He went on to say that Nick was going to be a really special college wrestler

Folkstyle practice at NLWC? Oh that sneaky Cael. Or was Nick enrolled in the Spring?

I don't recall seeing that type of top game at Edinboro, but I'm probably wrong.

I won't venture a guess who wins.

But I do have a gut feeling that Nick will fight for a starting spot. Just pure speculation/hunch on my party, but I'm thinking Nick only shirts if Jered beats him in a wrestle off.

Tom are you aware of any recent updates on Jered's recovery?

I have little knowledge of Lee, but I have seen a few of his matches on flo, I did not see enough or Cortez last season before the injury to make a solid call on who would win this match up....
But My gut tells me that Lee needs a RS year, So I think a solid transfer would help Nick---Meaning give him a RS year---I am hoping for McKenna---

I would agree. My only observation is that I believe Cortez is underrated especially by other boards, but even here by some. Only a gut feel also, but I believe he was an AA at 133 if healthy (though would have to wait and watch at 141 and the health).

Last year when talking about injuries, most people didn’t even mention him like he would not of been a factor at all. Hopefully we find out this year, but I think he could surprise some people.

I don't know the answer either, no one does. What I do know, are some of Jered's results, pre-injury.

While he lost to Scotty Parker 12-4 in his last bout, Jered beat the same Scotty Parker 3-1 at the NLO the year before. He also beat Jordan Conaway 5-4 at the same tourney. When he returns healthy, he'll be a handful, imo.

Agreed, but would assume there is some development plan or facet of his attack that he is trying to develop.

3 quick thoughts:

I'd call Cortez an AA quality wrestler last year if healthy but not necessarily an AA. 133 was insanely deep, and some good wrestlers were not making the podium.

Bottom is typically a challenge for freshmen, even more so for true FR. We'll see how Lee handles that adjustment.

McKenna would make the comparison obsolete.

Yes. Joey McKenna would make this a mute point...We will find out soon.

Agree with this. Plus, it makes little sense to put Nick Lee into the lineup if a healthy, injury-free Cortez is availablle. It seems unlikely that Lee, as a true freshman, would do significantly better than Cortez in 2017-18. So give Cortez his chance and let Lee redshirt.

Now, if Joey McKenna transfers in, all bets are off. McKenna would likely slot in immediately at 141 (2017-18) and then battle it out with Berge and Verkleeren to replace Retherford at 149 the following year. Cortez, meanwhile, would likely sit in 2017-18 unless he is able to make 133 and duke it out with Keener.

A mute point can be one of two things:
  • When someone in a group makes a good suggestion, but somehow nobody hears it.
  • Addressing the participants in a conference call when your phone is on mute.
It's unclear how the question of Nick Lee versus Jered Cortez falls into either category.:confused:

Third thing:

A lot of people have judged Cortez on his performance against Parker and in the Keystone Classic.

Given what we know now, we should all give him mulligan. I thought he was an AA candidate last and I still think he's an AA candidate this year.

This thread was never intended to be a knock on Cortez. It's also not a thread on what should we do this year at 141. It is simply a question as to who do you think would win head to head? Rationale for one's choice is greatly appreciated.
