No Singleton at practice today--anything to read into that?

According to Audrey Snyder: James Franklin says we’re wasting a question by asking about RB Nick Singleton who was not spotted at the media viewing window tonight. Says there’s nothing to share at this point.

"at this point"
seems to be concerning part of that non-answer by Franklin.

Any time a key player isn't at practice it's concerning but it could be countless things unrelated to football

True--could be an academic class-related thing or a family thing though Franklin's non-answer answer does create more speculation than "he's taking care of a few non-football things." -- if that was actually the case.

He did do media interviews via Zoom yesterday so there's that.

It's such garbage how he handles player availability. Especially now in the days of NIL. As someone Tweeted, when you're begging people for money to pay players so they stay, you better believe we are owed answers. I listen to a few pressers from other coaches, and james is the only one that just doesn't give updates, it's so ridiculous. Such a juvenile approach he has.

So, I would imagine he would have had to have suffered an injury in practice before yesterday, because he wasn't injured during the Illinois game. Honestly, this mystery bullshit from Franklin is getting tedious.

If he can't go against Southern California we ain't winning out there. Can probably get away with it this week because of our defense.

WTH does that mean? Someone on the inside needs to post on this because I absolutely detest the childish way Franklin handles this

To people that are not rational.... I am sure it is a matter of great concern.

Bumps and bruises. Not sure on availability for this weekend but will be ready for Southern Cal.
"Bumps and bruises"? Is this D1 elite football or Juniata College? Bumps and bruises don't usually sideline a player for a game.

Or...maybe there's a family issue he isn't going to share with the world.

I don’t know what coaches you listen to but the most play it close to the chest. Does it really matter if he was getting extra treatment or taking a test or was sick. Nothing is going to change.

Why keep it "close to the chest"?
What is gained regarding the availability of a RB?
If it was Allar...okay yeah I could see that

Let me specifically highlight this portion...

What may have sounded like a non-update, actually may have been good news for the Nittany Lions. When asked specifically by a reporter if "is there anything going on there that may impact his availability," Franklin replied "No, Not at this stage. When asked if there's anything else he could add about Singleton, Franklin answered with a simple "no".

While on the surface, a "not at this stage," answer may be concerning for the Nittany Lions, the context of being asked if there was anything going on that could impact his availability, the "not at this stage," answer becomes potentially more of a relieving answer for Penn State fans.

I listen to Rhule, Bielema and Day periodically. I enjoy listening to other B1G coaches for insight, knowledge, etc. JF is in a world of his own with his zero info brick wall of injury updates.

Not at this stage is such a JF gray answer. That is different than 'no.'

This is the exact quote. Many beat reporters should be ashamed of what they are putting out there in quotation marks as it's misleadingly making it sound worse. Franklin's first word when asked if something would impact Singleton's availability was no. Obviously Franklin didn't say much, which is typical, but this could be a myriad of things some of which may not even be injury related. Personal issue, family issues, food poisoning, etc. could be possible examples.

Unfortunately many folks are hyper-reactive. Their default setting is “ OH MY GOD” to perceived anomalies. — He played well, and late into the last game without apparent injury. He could have sustained something, but if so, it’s likely minor/short term. —Also could be school related, medical ( or other) appointment, personal issue, etc. —If there is an injury, it’s highly likely that it’s short term, and can give RB number 3 a great opportunity for playing time against a low level ( this year) BIG 10 opponent . — So many possibilities here, and given the backstory/recent history, most of them are minor or completely benign . —JMO

Stop being so rational. This board is not for that kind of behavior. Scream 😩 😱 😩 😱
Now that would be more like it.

I don't know why everyone thought injury. Franklin saying nothing immediately made me think it's unrelated to football.

This. Nick is fine.

Yeah. Remember, he was just sued by a team doctor.

Both sides of this argument seem pretty silly to me.
Franklin always seems to take on a bit of an arrogant tone when he responds to questions about player availability.
On the other hand, it’s his team and he can set any policy he likes. And he is pretty consistent on this policy.
I know writers want to report a scoop. But why would anyone else have a need to know if Smith is playing for Tech this weekend or if Jones is playing for State? We’ll all find out Saturday when the game starts. Nothing before opening kickoff matters.

Yeah. Remember, he was just sued by a team doctor.
That has nothing to do with giving updates, even if it is generic, to the media. The majority of coaches give some kind of info beyond the 'you are wasting a question' BS that JF does.

And you wonder why people don’t like James Franklin
Seems to me, the only people that really have a reason to know whether a player is hurt and may not play are those who are betting on the game. What difference does it make in the end? The game is still going to be played and they have other players to take the place of the "injured" player. Almost seems like some people are just looking for more excuses to not like Franklin.

Imagine if the concern was Allen rather than Singleton. I bet our panic level would be far less. The board is admitting to the reality that Singleton is the most dynamic player on offense!

Then he tied her up “and then”He turned on the buzz saw”and then”???ah ah And then along comes JonesSlow walking Jones Slow talkin Jones along came long sl in lanky Jones.Jones will get to the bottom of this

Grown men become high school drama queens over a player missing practice. Wow I have better things to worry about. Little clue here he either plays or he doesn't play on Saturday. All the hand wringing and outrage will not matter.

The problem with "no, not at this stage" is that it invites the question "at this stage"...of what? The implication being "at this stage of whatever kept him out of practice today." Also suggesting there may be a "stage" that does affect his availability.

Sorry, I did information analysis and word parsing for a living in a former life.

Anyway, I doubt it's anything super serious, and we don't need Nick to beat UCLA anyway. USC...different story.

I get Rip's point about Nervous Nellies but I think people are jumpy because of the history of bad-luck issues with some potentially great running backs like Noah Cain and Journey Brown. Not to mention recently losing one of our best defensive guys...and still not knowing the nature of the injury.

LOL...you must not know any attorneys.

" anything you say can, and will, be against you in a court of law"

Or like the old ESPN news used to say when reporting that a player was "day to day", they say "aren't we all day to day?"

To me, it doesn't sound physical. Maybe he has a close family member who is very ill. Maybe he is working double time on a class as he's having a grade problem. Who knows. But CJF said there was no reason to think it will change his status for UCLA at this time.
